Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
That's why I did without AC...to figure these things out.
 Quoting: Mental Case

Have been doing all these things for years. Having to be outside is the harshness.

I also have the type of scarf filled with gel which absorbs water and continues cooling the neck until evaporated. Only takes a quick rinse to have it cooling again. They are a great blessing. So is the fan blowing on me as I sit here, when it's hot out. Also have a fan blowing on me in the bedroom.

Have to close the sliding glass door about three in the afternoon when the sun hits it, and close the blinds over it. Then when the sun is above the eaves, we open it again for evening cooling in here.

Believe me, with lupus, you learn early on everything that can be done to save your life and keep you comfortable! I just don't like heat and will probably complain about it more over the summer. It's not from not doing everything possible to cool off, including getting into the shower with sundress on when it's really sickening!

Here is my tip. Get chickens. Then check with your local food bank to collect their unwanted \expired stuff for your chickens.

I recently started doing this. Not only an I getting a couple big boxes not produce and bread for the birds. (Masking the eggs free and nutritious). But I pick up the canned goods as well. Organic coconut oi, jam, not sauce, etc is still good long after the exploration date. But if they can't read the expiration date or it's past it. They toss. I pick up.

I now have several shelves of good food for an emergency. I can still feed it to the chickens come winter . (They are not getting the Marion Barry jam or shrimp!)

When you quote someone, their name needs to be with the quote so we know to whom it is attributed. Not always necessary to quote anyone - just word your sentence so that we understand the subject starter. Saves space.

Good job, Samantha Sunflower! Do you also have more food put away for yourself? I do hope so - remember a good quantity of beans and rice, like them or not, as filling and highly caloric, which will be necessary. Many other kinds of food, vitamins, lots of things you will need for yourself.

How are you doing on water supplies?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Over the years I've been able to assemble a basic set of medical supplies, some from outright buying equipment like my manual BP cuff and stethoscope. But if you like to go to rummages and yard sales you can find some interesting stuff there. I picked up an old microscope, all it needed was some cleaning to be fully functional. Actually ran across a really nice binocular model later on for $15 but it didn't have a mirror as an option for a light source.

Found a dissection kit, picked it up because of the scalpel. Reusable and can be sharpened.

I have nursing manuals from the 1930s that talk about how to process equipment and supplies for sterile use from a time before modern custom packs with disposable everything. Old lab manuals that teach you how to make supplies rather than order them and do tests with fundamental equipment instead of loading a sample into an automatic machine that requires proprietary cartridges. Old pharmacy manuals that tell you how to prepare medicines and assay them for effectiveness. This is a niche that a prepper's library can fill.

It's not that I'm a medical professional but I hope to work with them in a collapse to provide the safest care that we can provide under the circumstances.

Very, very well done! Again - wish we were neighbors! I've always loved thrift shops and garage sales for the amazing finds to be had. Wish I could still be going. Maybe one day soon.

You have done so well in preparing - and likely there would be someone with the skill and knowledge, just no parts and pieces, with which you could pair! Lucky people you find to help!

I have an advantage with the work that I do, I get to pick through custom pack revisions for stuff that is going to be thrown out. All kinds of surgical equipment, probes and scissors and forceps and clamps. It's all floor grade stuff but in a situation where it is needed...

But we each have an advantage in some way. Check your local events calendar. I have a (reasonably) local group that is doing monthly classes on herbalism. You have to put up with some new age stuff but the rest is solid. There's a community garden group to my south that teaches beekeeping. Find these people in your area, even if they aren't in your own political/religious/philosophical circle of thinking and learn while you can!

Wonderful that you have access to those items. May many lives be saved as a result of your forethought. Lord, bring the right medical experts to partner with Lowkey to save many.

Anyone able to attend classes, I wholly concur - take every class you can - First Aid, herbalism, anything and everything because ever fact and method you learn will come into play at some point.

Just popped in my head. Thought it might help you cool off in that heat. I have had a chill in my bones for several days. Yep. I certainly am troubled by the headlines today. Took a get something worthwhile mood and cleaned the shower. Should have used something less toxic than bleach spray cleaner. I am tired now but have a clean shower.

Forgive us, Pooka, for our lack of slimming down the quotes. I have been here a long time but only recently began learning how. The main reason I did so was I too was tired of the many pages of walls of repeat text. I still botch it up once in awhile.
