Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
And water, although water is partially covered by power - though we have talked often through the thread about water storage, hand dug wells, pitcher pumps, streams, lakes, other sources, purification methods, and goodness knows I have told people til they probably hate to see me write a word any more, that they need four times as much water as they think they do, and will wish for even more than that.

Power will be in charge of our communications, which is a vital issue, at least for some of us. Others may be connected through family, near neighbors, employees of various service and grid companies. Some of us will be staying home, alone, with a hand-cranked radio to learn what's going on.

If this disaster begins now and the aftermath continues until fall and winter, heat will be a terrible burden for many of us - those who don't and can't have wood or propane heat and cooking, for example.

Yep, Water, food, power - and sometimes power will take precedence, and also be the thing we most miss and want.

Those with generators will be in great shape until the generators are stolen or run out of fuel.

If and when the sfan for real , this is the thread that all will condense down to , if they still have power and internet.
 Quoting: Pinkorchid- Not NPC

Looking more and more real as moments go by, unfortunately. Between us we may be able to keep this green-pinned in that case, providing power continues, so that desperate people will be able to come and ask questions. Lord willing, enough of us will be here to answer.

I think we are only allowed to green pin three times in a week each, so we will have to carefully take turns if the time comes.

Very glad you are here, PinkOrchid! We don't always agree, but mostly, I think, we do, and we certainly agree on the importance of preparation!

There are some incredible people in this thread - you will very much enjoy getting to know them, I am sure!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Y'all celebrate with me - I just planted canteloupe, kale, and Four Season lettuce, all heirloom, finally. In the oil drain pans I purchased for the purpose ages ago. It finally seemed the right time and we had made the right place on pallets for three pans, so by George I've finally done it. No idea what to expect, but am surely going to have a good time finding out. If a lot of canteloupes come up, I will transplant verrrrrrry carefully to larger planters, like gallon size. Ah luv me sum canteloupe!

Edit: Forgot to include the Scarlet Runner Beans which are soaking and will go into hanging baskets tomorrow. I'm just worn out - plowing all day long and that dang cantankerous mule just kept pullin' sideways and the dust got up my nose and the kids was late with my lunch and my feet is tired, but by Moses that south forty is PLANTED!!!

What has everyone else been doing today?

JD is offline, apparently - hope to hear from him soon. He commonly takes breaks from the internet during summer, because he feels many people are away doing summer things. He's probably right - lucky them!

Anyone else closely following the war threads on here? Looks very gloomy out there!

Price is going up, every day. I keep watching the gas stations. It was headed up for summer already, then this - I'd get a bunch! Do you have a tank at home for large quantities?

Glad you have arranged your generator to be safe. I still don't feel good about your neighbors and their friends.

Was thinking tonight, if nobody else comes around bothering, if my grouchy neighbor got snoopy about why I don't go anywhere, if we were in a time of scrounging for food and water, he knows I am ill, so it would be easy to tell him I am not well enough to go anywhere. He might even bring me a bottle of water! That would be very nice. There's another older man across from me - think he is ill right now as someone drives his truck and takes him somewhere almost every day. He has weapons and so has the grouch. Those are good things, long as they can aim and know who the enemy is. No guarantees on that.

I hope you have no difficulties with the visitors to your neighbors, but I know you will explain things in ways they can understand.

Of course they are. They have to. Those looking for easy money would rob them otherwise. Lots of shootings and stabbings around here at harvest season.

Happy that I only grow vegetables.

To elaborate (yay, internet is back), there was an incident yesterday at the same house at about the same time where an ambulance and firefighters showed up, there was smoke coming out the front door. This morning it just freaking burned. I mean, like bonfire get the marshmellows out kinda burned. Flames shooting up and smoke as thick as fog.

That's crazeeeee! So the first time they tried to burn it was a flop and they had to hit it again?

What sort are these neighbors? Home owners or renters? Suspicious amounts of traffic at all hours?

Glad you and yours and now your ISP are all good.

People, the quote function still has issues and they are working on it. Advice for now is to quote only one person at a time, and hope it doesn't get confused.

Fortunately we don't have diatribes going on in here, so it won't be a big problem to us with something ugly being attributed to the wrong person, but that is happening in certain other threads.

Just be aware - and if someone denies saying something, check it out - they are likely telling the truth. I was accused of saying something really, really awful about a very, very respected member of GLP, because that's how the quote function put it - fortunately the mod present, as well as others, knew it was not me, not the way I write, not the language I use. It worked out, but wow - sure was ugly!

They rented but I liked the family, quiet and polite. I don't think that they set the fire. It is very suspicious though. I should plan on being awake around 4:00 in case there's a firebug in the area.

Ok. For everybody that has a slug problem. I have found the perfect "slug lure". Found it quite by accident. It was deposited on the concrete walkway near my front door. A neighbor's little dog who did not like getting his feet wet left the lovely present. I left it for two days for a couple of reasons. First reason being to not have the scent carried to the door if I removed it to flush it. The depositor might decide to leave the next one on the doormat. Second reason was to let it dry enough so that nothing remained on the concrete. I should have taken a photo as proof. The little doggie turd was completely covered with slugs and more surrounding it. I discovered this sight at night. So here is an easy way to catch them. Put the lid of a margarine tub down, add your furry friend's donation, go out at night and place the tub down onto the lid. Toss in garbage or release elsewhere. Done.

Thanks for the great idea, really! A lot of people don't know that beer just tortures them to death, until I explain that's why I don't use it.

Fires can and often do come back to life. A house has some small enclosed places that a firehose may not reach. Hours or even days later an ember smoldering finally gets hot enough to flame up. That happens often with trees that burn also.
