Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
You know, I think that I'm at the point where all idioticy (Firefox won't even offer a completion) could break loose and I (along with those next to me) would be alright. For a few weeks at least. And those few weeks would buy me time to get ready for a longer haul. Plant, harvest, continue for as long as I want to be alive.

Maybe have a surplus that I can share with my neighbors or sell for whatever passes as income.

And I don't have a lending library but anyone who wants can browse through my library at leisure. My tool set isn't for lending but we can reach some kind of agreement I want to see others succeed. You just have to put some feeble effort out.

The simple fact is that the more people around you that thrive in a WROL situation, the less that you have to accomplish yourself. Bring as many people as you can that want to live.

Now, put this scenario in the fall and I'm far more strict on who soaks up any reserves that I might have. I'm looking at 6 months of winter to get through. I'm still willing to help, maybe you need labor, maybe I can spare seed, perhaps a romp through my library will give an answer. At your wit's end? Ask someone for help. You might find me, or someone like me.

You are very kind, Cyberpunk! I hope that only people ready to work or exchange will come to you.

I'm not in position to help anyone, unfortunately, and don't dare try as, being alone, I could be helping at the front door while the back door is being breached. Not from a lack of wanting to help, but from a need at the moment to be self-protecting. I'll be able to help down the road, or someone will find my preps and be helped when I am gone.

God bless us each and every one, and all the innocent people upon whom war may fall, and all our service men and women in harm's way.

The unspoken thing is that I'm very cruel. And I accept that eventual designation. I will help anyone willing to help themselves. If you are one of those who can't put water aside despite a week's warning from emergency management that a hurricane will roll through then I will simply let events play out in their inevitable manner. This isn't racist, this isn't classist, this is letting bad decisions come to their conclusion. Give me a glimmer that you are ready to help yourself and I shall give you what little aid that I can.

That's not cruelty. I choose not to share my precious water with someone who was clearly warned to have water ahead, and did not do so. That's common sense - you had the same chance I did, neighbor, and you chose not to use it. Sorry- decisions have consequences.

Edit to add: I might give ONE bottle of water, depending on circumstances, if I think it would get the person or people to move on away from my place and look elsewhere for more.

Agreed, if a person needs water to get to a place then I just want them out of my local sphere of influence. They can have as much water as they can carry. I might even give them enough gasoline to get 10 miles away. I've actually done that for people. Just... get... away from here. But when things get real and we all realize there ain't anything but what we make then I play my cards close to my chest. With God's help I can always offer water to travelers. It would be a bitter day if I had to deny people something as simple as water.

Edit: I think that it is important that those of us who have seen some event coming, and prepared for it, be prepared against the onslaught of people who can't have 4 cans of Chef Boyardee on hand when something goes down. There are people out there who will flood our commons looking for food, askin you for food and water and maybe gasoline. If you can offer something, maybe it's better to offer nothing. This is what the prepared needs to balance against the flow of people after an event. This is were I become Cynical Full bellies are something that gpvernments are well established but only persons can provide And I loose my faith in government everyday..

My access to water is limited except in days of heavy rain, and even then I'm not sure how much I'll be able to collect, though will be working hard at it. Therefore how much I share has to be limited. I'm sorry this is so, but it is. I have a case of bottles in the car and two in the garage and that's why I said I could send a bottle to get people away. If they are genuinely thirsty, they will be grateful and move on.

The only gas I have is in my vehicle's gas tank and I don't plan to share from there. They will have to find elsewhere and I just pray they don't cut the rubber tubing beneath mine.

I don't want anyone to go hungry or thirsty, but I cannot take responsibility in general for those who did not prepare. The warnings have been everywhere - for power outage, storms, earthquakes. "It can't happen to me/us" is a meme all its own.

At least you have something on hand if life as you know it has a hiccup. It's not much but now you have options. Not a bad investment for $1.60 or so.

Definitely a start! Many have no reason to know what they need to have on hand, because MSM doesn't bring it up.

Just thinking to myself how terrifying it would be to suddenly realize, in this time of possible immediacy of war - suddenly knowing a person needs food and water and so much more, and need it yesterday. I'm so sorry for those who are caught this way.

In a way I wish we could keep this thread on the front page all the time, so that we know for sure everyone reading GLP sees it, and understands that prepping might be something they should look into. On the other hand, we are not responsible for carrying the message to every person. It's a dilemma. Worst is for those with children, if they have nothing. That's incredibly sorrowful to me.

The information is in so many places, though - don't you agree? For example, one can hardly go to YouTube without seeing something about prepping, right?

I hope that gentleman understood that I was encouraging him to learn, to think, to be prepared. Perhaps not. Perhaps the real issue was that he realized he had counted on water coming out of the tap for his filter, and suddenly realized it probably would not.

If you are still here, AC, we want to help you become prepared.

We are still a nation of plenty. If I were only now beginning to prepare I could go out tomorrow (because of the late hour) and buy enough to last for a long time, and at a good price. Even the canned pasta is on sale, buy 10 for $10 and get two free.

No one needs to go without, not if they are paying attention and have the wherewithal to actually do something. If this describes yourself, I've been looking for you.

But we will have to come to terms with all of the people who, for whatever reason, have absolutely no stores at home. I once worked with a woman who mused which fast food chain she would buy dinner from every evening for herself and her five year old daughter. Nothing in the pantry. At the same time I despair for these people and I despise them because they will be the ones I have to turn away.

Ten for ten is amazing! I'd grab that if I lived where you live! I do watch the sales here, but we don't have many grocery stores so they don't have to have such great sales to get people in. People go to these stores because there are no other choices.

I feel very, very sorry for that woman's child! Growing up with such poor nutrition - that's almost criminal! Perhaps she thinks when things go south she can continue on fast food. She'll have to figure something out, since she doesn't know how to cook the cheap, storable foods!

No, we cannot feed people with no clue, no food, no sense - I'm sorry - but you didn't help yourself when you could - I'll hand something to somebody who tried, first.

My feeling is that the ones who genuinely tried will have something to barter. These I will respond to if I believe I can do so safely. If they come offering anything at all, I will try to give them what they need, and perhaps not even accept their proffer. They did the very best they could do, and still want to do the right thing. I respect this tremendously.

Yah, my immediate reaction was the same - that poor girl. And at the end of days, I really hate having to turn such people aside but given the limitations that we will see I can only assist people with foresight and supplies. I wish that I could give help to everyone but I have to earn everything that is in my own stores. Once again, give me a glimmer that you are willing to stand on your own and I shall do what is in my (admittingly little) power to help you. This is why I said that I'm cruel. I recognize the large numbers of people dependent on society as it is and I am reluctantly unable to support them in even a baxic fashion.

Again, stand for yourself, show initiative, build your own resources. When you need help people like me will take a look and say "Yeah, we're not throwing scarce resources into a bonfire" and do what we are able to make you succeed.

Not looking at all good today for the possibility of world war.

Please do laundry and dishes and top off water storage. Run out for any last-minute preps. Pray God to spare every innocent person and protect our brave servicemen and women as they are in harm's way.

Edited to add: According to those "in the know" chemical and biological weapons are loaded and may or may not be used in the ME. We know we have sleeper cells here but we do not know what their orders are, nor what "supplies" they have.

I hope this all settles quietly with no actual damage, but according those with connections, it doesn't look likely.

Edit: Things seem to be settling a bit now - but then, isn't that just when to be most watchful? At any rate, for the moment things appear to be calmer.

Crunch, extremely heavy rain headed your way, I am sorry to say. Caught it on the most recent page of the Oroville thread which is currently repinned.

So sorry to see this coming toward you - Texas is having a very bad wet time, but this is a new one and is likely to make a huge mess. Rain for the next week measured in inches.

God bless and keep you and yours, high, dry and safe!

I have a friend who distributes food for the poor at his church.

Although I own my own business, I actually have a limited income living primarily off my Social Security check. If the company makes money, I reinvest it in the company buying equipment, etc.

I give the friend/neighbor excess eggs from my poultry on a regular basis. He reciprocates by providing me with food that his church has not distributed or that people are not taking.

I got 144 cans of beef stew (not so great, but you can add spices and a bit of cheese to make it palatable) and about 60 cans of cheap tuna.

These are welcome in our diet of mainly beans, rice, tortillas and chicken soup (from our excess chickens).

It's about time for me to start slaughtering excess ducks. I like duck eggs, but the drakes just eat and produce nothing.

I did some research on water filters awhile back. Those $20 Sawyer mini's are designed for backpackers who are away from farm land and suburbs. They won't filter out pesticides or chemicals. So I waited for a sale and got an MSR filter for $60. Full retail right now is $90. Much better filter.

Good job! My question was - how much water do you have put away? And when all that is used up, where are you going to get the water on which you plan to use your MSR filter?

I have a 400' well with an electric pump. I have a couple of generators with fuel stored to hook up to the pump.

In a grid down situation, I would probably rig a pump using garden hose and a one way valve. Got plenty of hoses around; just need the one way valve and PVC fittings.

I also have a pond that contains about 6 acre/feet. It never gets dry in our wet climate. I would start out using that water for livestock and irrigation of the garden.

However, it is about 900' from the garden. Need to invest in more hoses for emergencies.

Of course, I have about 80 gallons stored in my barn in old 5 gal. water bottles. I added chlorine before sealing them.

Prepping does not have to be expensive if you scrounge well! The water bottles were left at my company by a vendor, so I put them to good use.

This morning I changed out the water in all of the livestock tanks. I have a lot of them.

Ref the guys experiencing flooding, we were having an unusually dry Spring. Then, about a week ago, we got some massive thunderstorms. I don't have a rain gauge, but I had a plastic trash can out by the barn. It had over 18" of water in it.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

Boy are you blessed! That canned food will give such a change of pace! And the beef stew over instant mashed potatoes will provide a hearty meal with lots of calories. The tuna - lots of ways to use it, though I eat little tuna since it collects so much mercury and other heavy metals from the ocean.

Happy you have all the eggs - such wonderful protein! We used to have to cull our drakes as well - hated the process. The original pair we kept alive - they kept producing babies and they ate dog food from my little girl's hands.

Haven't had roast duck since back then. Miss it. Don't know how I'd feel today about butchering - might have lost that ability.

I have some water stored but have a creek and a pond behind the property. and more ponds and lakes within an easy bike ride. get a bike its my main source of transportation.

Then you have access to lots of water as long as you can stay in place. That's great news! Remember you will need to purify, so have the means to do so, in addition to your filter. I always recommend pool shock. Easiest, cheapest, never goes bad.

Bikes are very wise transportation for those who can ride them, both now and in future serious events. Good for you!

Now, do you have a way to add to your food storage in quantity? Some things at the dollar store are good - just read the fine print and take nothing that came from China. Watch local stores for sales - Darth's locale has incredible sales!

Darth, got room for a trailer on your property? I'm on my way!~ Two dogs and good seeds.

Of all the threats that we face today, this is the one that I feel is the most immediate, even if there is war in the Middle East. We might even see a perfect storm of crop failure and terrorist activity right about when autumn is in full swing. Imagine having to go into winter not knowing what you will be able to buy in the store?

Unfortunately, I think that is very likely. People need to be growing their own in whatever way they can right now. I've got fruit going, of course, but also three little oil drainage pan of seeds planted.

This is the time to be putting away the food - because it does not look good out there, you are so right!
