Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
So here's something to consider - in the farm oriented stores they often have bulk bins of "food crop" seeds to create a crop intended for the local wildlife to eat. Today I picked up rye and buckwheat, two grains (well buckwheat isn't really a grain but anyways) that can produce a harvest under bad conditions. Buckwheat can be harvested in 2 1/2 or 3 months. Rye can be sown in the fall and winter over in cold that will kill winter wheat. So now I have a strategy to produce grains to supplement what I have stored and be ready to settle in for a prolonged time of trouble. I'll be testing this idea out on a small scale to get a feel for how well I might expect it to work.

The cost of these two grain seeds is very reasonable, I noticed they also had radish and turnip seeds in the same bins. If events unfold quickly and you are one of those people out in the stores looking for supplies you might want to visit one of these stores and quietly look for these bins. I found them in the sporting goods section.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
About ten days ago or so, my discount grocery had herbs in four inch pots inexpensively. I picked two lemon balm plants because I like it, bees and hummingbirds like it, and it's nice to dry and save.

Picked an ordinary herb - basil, I think, and the fourth plant I thought was another ordinary herb. Went to plant it today and discovered the most amazing surprise! It's actually Stevia! You know, the natural sweetener? No calories or bad stuff? Whoaa! So my iced tea all summer will be better than ever!

Started researching it and found this link people might like: [link to www.motherearthnews.com (secure)]

I didn't realize it could be found so easily - just assumed it would be a special-order item. Y'all might want to think about purchasing and growing Stevia - only need one or a few plants because you can make new plants easily from the original.

I'm excited about this wonderful accidental purchase!

I'll have to try stevia sometime, it's been on my "avoid" list because I lump it in with all the other no-calorie sweeteners that give me intestinal distress and headaches. But a fine addition to your herb garden!

I use organic stevia all the time. Since it's a plant and not a chemical concoction, it doesn't seem to have the physical effects - but, of course, your mileage may vary.

It is not difficult to grow, but I'd grow more rather than less, because sweet stuff may be at a premium and being able to trade some might make you "rich" in the SHTF world.

Might be worth trying, as it is not the same as those chemical sweets that many avoid and which apparently are pretty unhealthy. Read up on Stevia and get some ideas on how to use it. Some prefer the fresh leaves and others prefer dried. Certainly worth a try, since it's almost free, and free is a very good price!

That was my thinking, as well - not just for me, but for all those who will very much be craving sweets after they've been without for a while.

Fortunately it's easy to duplicate plants just starting with one if you are doing it in containers. Several would be better if you are doing it in a good-size garden area, but still duplicate and create more according to recommendations from websites.

Glad you are enjoying it. Tell us how you dry it for winter, please.

Haven't actually dried any - my plants have been indoors so far and I just picked leaves when I needed them. My last one lived for several years until one of my dogs decided it was good stuff last month and ate the whole thing in one night! They knocked the other two off and killed them.

Am starting over with a couple of plants again, but I'll have to find a good spot for it. I always kept it in my bay window, but that's the dogs' favorite spot too, so that has to change, LOL.

I'm going to plant a row of them outside if it ever dries up enough to plant. Finally put peppers and tomato plants in the ground Sunday, but they may well have washed away. It's been raining torrents since last night.

So far not a good spring for gardening. May have to do a rice paddy.

Maybe this weekend I'll pick up some stevia and try it. Not like I need no-calorie sweeteners but if I can tolerate it then I can recommend it to others.

You aren't wrong about sweet stuff being a trade good. Sugar and honey can keep a wound from becoming infected or preserve food. There are all kinds of sources - bees, maple (and other trees) syrup, sugar cane and sugar beets.

Oh, and I've heard reports from the hills of Appalachia of "orange powder", a substitute for black powder in flintlocks. Haven't run across how it's made yet but I know that sugar of some sort is used.

This weekend is looking and sounding possible as a kick-off for the Iranian mess.

Being Memorial Day, it's a day they'd like to ruin, I believe, and they don't seem patient enough to wait for July Fourth.

Therefore, Situational Awareness now through Monday is recommended.

Wow. Was testing out my tub water storage with one of those aqua pods by filling it in a second tub and leaving it for a couple of months. Found out the other day that there was lots of mildew on the bottom of the tub--no mildew however in the plastic interior.

There were no visible holes; It did not appear to have leaked, as it was still full to the top; the tub was very clean when I put the aqua pod in there and filled it with water.

Any ideas what happened? Lesson learned is always test your prep products before you need them.

I'd suggest the mildew came from dampness - the pod no doubt perspired at some point, and lack of air movement under it allowed mildew to grow. Might spray a water/bleach combination in the bottom of the tub prior to filling the pod next time and see if that prevents it.

You are blessed with these pods! Nice going!

Some here will recall my excitement the day I found a very old copper-bottomed tea kettle for almost nothing.

Last evening my microwave quit - a very bad thing considering the meals which are delivered all have to be heated thusly, and that's how I make tea water daily, as well.

So today after coffee I fetched out the new old tea kettle and can tell you it warmed the water very quickly on the electric stove and is almost comforting to have tea made that way! So happy I found and purchased it, way back before I knew the microwave would burst its bubble on a holiday weekend!
