Not blued, more of a scaled look. There is a patchwork crystal look to the surface.

Edit: I would add that I'm color,,, deficient. So what I see is usually far from what others see. That's why my long suffering wife sets out clothing combinations for me to wear. God bless her. Who knows what frightful things I would wear without her help!

So you are the man I heard about that scandalized an entire city because you wore a combination of pink, orange, and red, with blue slacks and brown shoes!!! Disgusting!

Give your wife roses, please, for saving the rest of us from such sights!!

I have not seen metal with a "scaled look" so I suspect your vision is fibbing to me.

I would submit that this is the actual way that I see things and that anyone else, regardless of their visual ability, anyone can see things for themselves. Galvanixed metal has a "scalded" look to me, I don't know any better way to describe it but it is unlike any other finish out there. If you are looking at an aluminum pan you won't see any patchwork in the metal. A galvanized pan has a distinctive signature.. Go look and see if I am fibbing. Or get a galvanized pan and use it against my warning. It doesn't really matter to me after I've said this.

And, I mean this is the utmost respect. Please don't think that I am trolling. This is my estimation.

Thread: EBOLA reaches Mexico...

Everybody got their N95 masks and gloves?

Edit: Some say the link in that thread does not say ebola has been found in Mexico. I reminded them that ebola remains in semen for months after recovery, so it IS there, just not yet found, and to watch the local women for illness very soon.

Ebola is on its way - cannot be otherwise. Don't know how it will be stopped in this country. We don't know who has crossed the border - this is really serious. Between ebola and an economic collapse, this fall will be very scary. Hope everyone is able to complete preparations.

I shopped again this week for a few things - another big bottle of olive oil, for one thing. Found some fascinating noodles, thin spaghetti-type, made of vegetables, different grains, etc. Couple more canned hams. Several different things to put away for "future reference".

Remember the crop failures and the fact that more flooding is going on this week, all over the center and to the right side of the country, all affecting our food production, as well as the many millions of pigs being killed in China and other countries with the latest swine disease.

How would a couple hens do, living in a cage in a garage? Seems like a poor life, yet I cannot imagine doing without eggs. Fresh eggs would be such a nutritional and flavor boost when everything else is difficult or impossible to acquire.

See where it is, where it is suspected, and keep watch daily if you like - this is highly bad news and good reason to be prepped and ready to shelter in place.

People, it's not a matter of "if". It's "when".

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Went to buy seed potatoes of my favorite variety, Yellow Finn, the other day, and those were all gone, so I will be growing some sort of red potatoes, says prolific and thin-skinned.

Planted them today in two more buckets from Walmart. Layer of hay, layer of soil, potato eyes, layer of soil, layer of nearly-rotted hay. Will be begging neighbors for grass clippings for the rest of the growth. If no grass clippings, then more hay, as they grow.

Harvest day - lay the bucket on its side, gently turn upside down, potatoes fall out, soil and hay and grass go on top of other plants and trees. VOILA!!

I've grown potatoes in nothing but grass clippings in the past - just put the seed potatoes on the ground, covered them, then kept covering them as they grew up. Great harvest!

Something may have already been posted on here about this , but I’ll post it anyway. It would be a good idea to store extra rat poison and some insecticides. If you have power loses and such for extended periods of time , there will be tons of rotting food, drawing flies , rats etc. They will hunt out food and warmth. Just thought I’d add this. Also in flood areas rats along with other vermin will seek higher ground, ants, roaches and spiders aswell.

Just to add to this, last year a person I know that lived next to the river had river rise and get close to their house. Next day House didn’t get water but was over run with spiderpocalypse.
 Quoting: Mkjeep

Also a good idea to build up a good supply of glue traps.
Not that expensive, and a good alternative and/or supplement to the poison and insecticide. They are amazingly effective in catching a variety of insects, and if large enough, even mice and snakes.

I had been wondering how to catch the spiders and other insects - the only thing I have is a glue trap for a specific kind of poisonous spider.

This is a wonderful suggestion which I have taken to heart and will be purchasing.

Are they safe for pets? Is it only glue? Like if one of my dogs got into one, it's just a matter of having to wash or cut the glue out of their hair? Not that I would put one within their reach, but you never know . . .

Thank you!

You were very good to warn people of this hazard. I believe there are many more people reading here, than posting, so you may have saved a number of people serious illness!

I will not be cooking or heating water with a galvanized pan - I don't even own one! I use stainless steel - the good kind - although I will admit to having purchased a new frying pan with a glass lid, and the pan has the coating to keep things from sticking. I know it's not good for us, but I can no longer handle cast iron, which is my preference, and standing at the sink trying to get burnt-on stuff out of a frying pan is also not on my good to-do list. No galvanized pans here. Even the dogs drink out of stainless steel!

I was talking to an auto mechanic the other day. He said they got a car in where something chewed on the wiring and when the guy went to start it everything shorted out. Including the main computer. So I put out 4 TomCat baits in the garage and you can see where critters have been clawing/chewing on them. And I've got a dead mouse a couple feet from the one bait. Better to spend a few bucks now than $1000 later....

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.

We'll also address the issues which may come up about "food stamps" and how to best manage without them, or with reduced amounts, or with partial box of food delivered with partial "food stamps".

We address power outage, heating and cooking methods, first aid, we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.

This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need right now, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn.

Welcome!! Join us and learn and teach and enjoy!!
 Quoting: Pooka

This thread might be a good place for me to put down this idea, OP. While I was sitting on the toilet about ninety minutes ago as of this post I was reading through a Diabetes booklet I have. I was also thinking about the inevitable collapse of American society, and all of Humanity shortly after the collapse of America. I realized that insulin has a definite shelf life. I actually thought the stuff could remain in cold storage for decades and room temperature for months straight. Nope... turns out the stuff is only viable in the best of circumstances for normally less than a month's time. Only the "best of the best" insulin lasts up to close to eighty days in the best of circumstances.

This means once the power grid is out, probably for months or years straight, Type 1 Diabetes are going to definitely die within about a month's time. Unless if there are a number of them who happen to have operational generators with the proper maintenance and fuel to last for years or longer and manage to secure a vast amount of insulin all Type 1 Diabetics will die within about a month's time. Type 2 Diabetics on the other hand will have a chance to eat healthier depending on where they're surviving and being willing to eat healthy foodstuff.

I could of sworn I heard of a plant in another GLP thread that is a natural form of insulin. If this is true this would be absolutely essential for Type 1 Diabetics to grow as much and often as possible during the later Christian Apocalypse Events.

dead mice in the wall is terrible. Better to get Victor traps and bait them with almond butter. Lots of bait work but that is my favorite.

Some here will recall my excitement the day I found a very old copper-bottomed tea kettle for almost nothing.

Last evening my microwave quit - a very bad thing considering the meals which are delivered all have to be heated thusly, and that's how I make tea water daily, as well.

So today after coffee I fetched out the new old tea kettle and can tell you it warmed the water very quickly on the electric stove and is almost comforting to have tea made that way! So happy I found and purchased it, way back before I knew the microwave would burst its bubble on a holiday weekend!

Good job! Wow! And at this time of year? Fall and winter will be far worse with rodents coming in out of the winter weather. Have to go to Home Depot tomorrow for heirloom seeds and will be looking for a big package of glue traps of all sizes - hope they come that way - an assortment of sizes all in one package - not going to happen, is it? LOL

Thank you for the good suggestion about protection of wiring!

Thank you; they are great for catching spiders and misc. insects. Number one recommended location is the water heater closet and/or central heat/air conditioning area where you change the filter--on the ground, on the shelf, etc.

I thought I had some insects coming under the front door sweep so placed one on the ground behind where you open the door, and caught several; just throw the glue trap away if it starts to get full. I tried placing one in front initially but accidently got one stuck on my shoe--took about a half hour to remove---lol - so probably not a good idea to place them where a pet could get to them; they can also be placed in cabinets, shelves, under the kitchen sink, bathroom sink etc.

My coffee percolator is one of the old models that you set on any form of heat to brew. It won't save my life but it very well might save someone else... from a caffeine deprived me.

Back in my off-grid childhood we would use aluminum wash basins to heat water for washing - dishes, clothes, ourselves. You could boil gallons at a time over a wood (gas, electric) stove or an open fire. Don't use galvanized steel!
 Quoting: Lowkey Cyberpunk

I'm with you on the coffee! I even bought some instant just in case I become insanely desperate and don't really want to tear down my own walls getting at the first person who makes a sound outside! LOL Some things are nice to have, would like to have when SHTF, some things are necessities. Nothing is quite as necessary as coffee in the morning - that's vital to the health and well-being of anybody within five miles of me.

So why not galvanized metal for heat water?
 Quoting: Pooka

I love my coffee and must have daily. I have about six large metal cans of coffee from Costco put away in my preps. Expensive.

Then I got to thinking, tea also has caffeine, so I bought a bunch of Lipton's on sale, three 100 bag boxes for $3.00 each. It may be stale by the time I ever use it but oh well. Tea has the added advantage that if you dry out the leaves after using them, they can be used again a second time.

Also I put half a dozen tea bags in my bug out bag; much easier and quieter to make tea than coffee in uncertain territory. Tea doesn't even really need hot water, if you're desperate. At least it will keep away the caffeine headache.

Windsage, I keep instant coffee sticks in my car, as well as tea bags. Cannot be without that caffeine.

Glad you are able to have so much coffee put away - I have far less, but then, I also don't have CostCo, drat it!

I have one of those little things that plug into the cigaret lighter and the metal coils go into a cup of water, to heat it. I have not tried it out - that's silly, isn't it? Gotta do that. Will try tomorrow.

I have tea in my preparations, as well - and wouldn't be without it. I drink coffee in the morning, then tea all day.

Another suggestion for you - tea sticks! You know, the little paper packets, long and narrow, containing powder that you pour into water. I became lucky on peach tea sticks - peach is my favorite flavor to mix with tea, and these are true black tea. Delicious. I keep quite a few in the car and more in the house ready to go.

Thanks for sharing with us, Windsage!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

I like this idea more and more - because there ARE spiders in here. I saw one come out from under a bathroom cupboard door the other day. Couldn't get to him quickly enough and he disappeared back where he came from.

I just don't like spiders around. Seems like I am less and less fond of spiders as time goes on. They didn't bother me much in the past, not as much as today. I don't scream or freak out, but I do object to their presence in my home.

Even the Swedish government is encouraging preparing. If they feel this is necessary, they who are not in the center of a storm as are we, we need to do twice as well at preparing as we have been, perhaps. What do you think, people?

I'm with you on the coffee! I even bought some instant just in case I become insanely desperate and don't really want to tear down my own walls getting at the first person who makes a sound outside! LOL Some things are nice to have, would like to have when SHTF, some things are necessities. Nothing is quite as necessary as coffee in the morning - that's vital to the health and well-being of anybody within five miles of me.

So why not galvanized metal for heat water?

I have a coffee tree in my greenhouse, but I don't know how many years I will need to wait for berries.

The Yaupon tree has caffeine in the leaves. It is native to the Southern USA, but I think it will grow almost anywhere.

Have not tried it.

I keep a good supply of coffee, one luxury I don't care to live without.

Hi, Darth! What fun to have your own coffee tree! How long is it expected to take to produce, according to whatever instructions you have used for it?

I've been working on having more and more coffee on hand - it's an expensive luxury, but in common with most people here, it's more a necessity than a luxury - I cannot imagine a morning without. I'll even use the dreaded instant, if necessary. Far better than none, no doubt.

Coffee will be an excellent barter good, if we have enough to be willing to part with any. Might be good to stock up a large supply of instant, because people desperate for caffeine will be ecstatic to have even instant!

Odd how we each have this certain necessity - I wonder about those who find alcohol necessary, or cocaine or other non-prescriptive pharmaceuticals - they probably will not long survive. So sad. Priorities out of whack.

We who demand that coffee be a part of our daily lives risk nothing in this preference/addiction. It does not change our perception of reality, nor make us behave peculiarly, nor risk our lives to acquire more. It is other people who are in danger, if we are without coffee - I said in an earlier post the ones in danger are those making a sound outside if I've not had my daily caffeine IV, because I might go after them with a bag of carrots or something, intending serious bodily injury! LOL

I'd be willing to test whether a Yaupon tree could survive Michigan winters. For science, you know. But I've taken to store ground coffee for the immediate need. Found a store that has Hills Bros coffee for a good price, whenever I ask at a truck stop about their coffee, nine times out of ten it's that brand.

Addiction is something that we'll have to deal with in our communities. Now, and after. If that person wants to deal with it then we should support them and give them meaningful roles to live up to. Those who are too far gone to contribute... I don't know what to say but it will become apparent that they consume more than they contribute. Coffee is one of those things that I'll come to live without, plenty of teas to be made from local plants. I might not have to incur bodily harm to anyone...

Wouldn't you know it, Amazon sells yaupon trees and yaupon tea.

Pooka, I don't know how long it will take my coffee tree to produce. If I get far enough ahead on chores, I may plant root clippings to make more coffee trees for my greenhouse.

For over 30 years I have ground my own beans daily. Used to buy them from Trader Joes, but now Wally World has coffee beans at a price that blows away Starbucks and the other expensive brands. It is no more expensive than ground coffee and way better.

Fearing a grid down situation, I bought a small MANUAL coffee grinder as a back up.

BTW, speaking of addictions, I read that almost 10% of Americans are on Prozac and related meds. YIKES. If SHTF, the various types of addicts will be very dangerous.

In an emergency, I think it wise to plant herbs such as poppies and MJ to provide local docs with emergency meds to treat all the nuts.

A little over 100 years ago, docs treated many mental illnesses and depression with Laudanum (morphine in alcohol). It worked, but it left millions addicted.

I was just thinking about coffee brands today. I select Folger's Columbian - my strong preference. However, very interesting you say truck stops use mostly Hills Bros. Is it fit to drink or like mud? The truck stop coffee, I mean, not the brand. Truckers need it very, very strong to keep awake.

Went out for heirloom seeds today and went by favorite grocery - picked up a fat jar of Maxwell House instant for future reference.

Anybody have a comment about the best, that is the most "real coffee flavor" instant coffee? And NOOOO decaffeinated, thank you very much. LOL

Bacon has already gone up a great deal, at least here. I passed it by. Not something I'll be able to have much in future, at least until the pendulum has swung. Still have some from last purchase, which I will use sparingly.

I buy very little meat, depending on the meals which are delivered for small amounts of chicken and such. I do buy hams on sale - went through a lot this late winter and spring. Still have a whole one in the freezer. Good thing I don't spend a lot on meat, because from what I see, even that amount would be costing a lot more by now.

Forgot to look for flavors of spam - drat.
