Quoting from an article from my auto insurance company:

If you’ve ever needed a reason to justify eating more chocolate, here it is: The Vitamin E found in dark chocolate decreases cognitive decline with age. In addition, dark chocolate contains caffeine, which improves focus and stimulates endorphin production, thus kick-starting a sense of well-being and a feeling of happiness. Along with Vitamin E and caffeine, consuming dark chocolate provides you with flavanol, an antioxidant that increases blood flow to brain.

So there you go - prep guilt-free with chocolate! Unfortunately, I prefer milk chocolate, but had best stock some dark for future reference, with a view toward having all the possible nutritional boosts I can.

Speaking of which- have you included vitamins in your preps? A good multivitamin only provides part of what we need. It's a boost, but not a complete one. Certainly do not omit the multivitamin, but do try to add specific supplements, too. If you are accustomed to taking individual supplements, as I am, those should be included, as well, though I know it is quite an expense to stock enough for long-term. Also, I strongly encourage one thousand milligrams per day Vitamin C. For one thing, I have not had a cold in probably more years than some of you are old, ever since I started the 1K per day C. It is a great antioxidant, in addition to doing a great many other wonderful things for our bodies. Vitamin E protects the heart. Vitamin B - too much good to list here, and can prevent bugs from biting, as well. Doesn't work for everyone, but for those it does - what a blessing! Get the 50 or 100 mg. B complex - B complex is made up of all the B components, which we certainly require for optimum health, nerve health, so much!

Okay, lecture is over for today. You may leave the lecture hall at your leisure. Office hours available in the Professor's Rotunda.

Also, be advised that salmon is a superfood, providing the essential fats we must have in quantity, as well as other impressive nutrients. Find ways to include salmon in your preparations, for times when you are working extra-hard, or not feeling up to par, or simply for a tastebud treat!

Broccoli is a major superfood and would go well in preparations. One of my favorite things is broccoli cheese soup. CostCo has it, and Auguson Farms, as well.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
It's a terrible sin to throw away food. One of the most frequent beginner prepper errors is buying food that their famiy doesn't eat or won't eat. You have to watch the expiration times and properly label food, maintain a vacuum seal, and rotate it so the oldest food gets eaten first.

If it's going bad in 2-4 weeks, either eat it or feed people who are hungry. You want to learn nutrition and cooking techniques as these are vital skills. If you throw food away, how much money did you just throw away?

You have to consider what is going to be harvested soon, what wild edibles can you glean without harming the wildlife, your food preservation methods, etc.

Feminism resulted in dismissing homemakers when you have to be on the the ball to manage that task and all the subcategories within.

And you will make certain menus that your family likes but maintaining these recipes even for a short time will dampen morale.
 Quoting: WhyKnot

Home-making and home-makers should be honored highly, as they are in the Bible. Have a look at Proverbs 31, for example. Those of us who can see to our households in effect earn more money than the home's breadwinner, if we are really good at what we do. Gardening, preserving, painting a room or the outside, repairing small areas and items, mending, sewing, child care the right way, so many things. It was my honor to be a home-maker, and I was the best of the best - home-made bread, dinner on the table when my husband returned from work, always knew where my child was and why, so much. I loved every bit of it, and did it very well. Every day was an adventure, when I woke in the morning and determined what to do that day. Every day had major accomplishments, and I went to bed satisfied I had done my best and contributed greatly to my family, my household, my community. I'm sad for the women today who will never know that feeling.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
The LDS church is the best at preparing for long-term - they have been doing this longer than anyone else, and have learned what works. They know how to do it, and are happy to help any non-LDS do the same.

Contact your local LDS church and ask for the person who makes the orders from their warehouse. In some cases you are close enough that you can go and can your own, when they are done for the day. If that is too distant, they will pick up your order when they collect the orders for church members, and you go and get yours from them. They can also supply the buckets for storage, for a fee.

They are some of the kindest people you will ever meet! The other day I was chatting with an LDS person I'd just met, and asked about the local church contact for getting food. She knew I am not LDS. She began to give me a name and number - and I don't recall how it came out, but she thought that I needed food - hadn't any - and they would have provided me, not belonging to them, food to eat! I was amazed! I knew they were kind and loving to the community around them, but I had no idea they would even feed the hungry who asked!

Fortunately this was soon squared away and she gave me the name and number of the person who does the ordering. To locate the food storage services nearest you, use this website: [link to providentliving.churchofjesuschrist.org (secure)] or telephone the local LDS church. You will be glad you did!

You fix those brakes nice, you! LOL Hope the job went well and quickly and wife is now safe again.

Your second link doesn't work, and the first one is already in my post.

The people you felt might be volunteers are working off the assistance they have received. Food, even bill help is given to members who need them, and in return they spend x number of hours working for the church in one way or another. They may even ask a non-member to spend some hours repaying - and I think it's wonderful - wish food banks had a way to do the same! Then the many who abuse them would no longer do so, perhaps.

Really good to have you back. Have you followed the news about food shortages? And the empty shelves in some grocery stores? If not, better have a read of this thread as well as ours: Thread: I ADVISE YOU TO CLICK THIS! It has begun. FOOD SHORTAGES.

I did not know that about pay it back it great.
Food insurance something that I made a priority long ago.
It has evolved from filling the pantry, then to add some 50 pounds bags of rice, oats and beans.
Now that the fruit trees have grown and are established mature producing. My lifestyle has changed into a mini or micro farm, garden ever changing and expanding.

Some lessons learned
Many feed store whole grains and seeds are eatable and will sprout, grow and produce food, I keep a couple of hundred pounds of each as part of my food insurance.
Whole oats have several uses and stores best, as cut or rolled oats not so much. I rotate it by grinding into Irish oatmeal, Grind a little more and add to baking, Feed as a treat the chickens and rabbits, When I clean up the animals droppings i spread it out and water, in about a month I have a pasture of oat hay for the chicken rabbit tractors to mow.

Posting a link here to a sweet woman with a YT channel that I would be grateful to have you all support - you can learn so much from her about food preservation, off-grid living, gardening, frugality - she's amazing. She lives on the tiny amount she earns from YT, so please subscribe to her channel and click the upward thumb button for each that you watch. If you watch the few ads all the way through, that adds a tiny bit, as does watching the video until it quits. A kind thing to do would be while you are busy with something else, let her videos just run on auto.

Really, you can learn a great deal from her! I am!

Edit: Wanted to add that she is in the eastern part of the US. Before long I will add someone who is in the western US, as things are different coast to coast - plants, native herbs, all sorts of things, including prices.

I'm a firm believer in open and concealed carry as that is your right as an American, but whatever you do, be cautious and not haughty. These Democrats want to take away firearms. This is not the time to be swaggering and in your face as that will be EXACTLY playing into the Democrats hands. You better be open and concealed carry by the book based on your state laws.

In Kentucky, it's no big deal, but a fool scaring people by design would put a patriotic sheriff, policeman, or trooper in a terrible position. You may think you swaggering helps but it hurts every prepper who has diligently worked to show we are normal everyday people. Please don't undo decades of work.

If you are pointing the firearm and your finger appears to be on the trigger, you put that LEO (who almost certainly is an NRA member and hunter) in a bind.

Acting the fool with a weapon is very nearly the ultimate foolishness. Carry it as a sign of quiet strength, not as though you are making up for inadequacies in other areas!

The fact that you have it is enough. Don't call attention to it, don't pull it, don't brag about it. Just act like you are all grown-up and have some sense. How's that?

More stupidity with weapons will only bring more threats and actions from those opposed to weapons.

If you MUST unholster your weapon to save your life or someone else's, do so. Otherwise, leave it in place. Remember every action you take reflects on every other weapon owner in this country. Take it as seriously as it deserves, which is DEADLY SERIOUS!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Smart thinking here about using preps and what we will actually need to have - experience speaks!

If you watch it on yt, note the comment by Versatec about living on preps. She surely had not prepped for real eating - and no doubt is incredibly thankful they tried the diet and learned what they really needed before they really need it!

Variety will be required for mental and physical health - remember this. All rice and beans and lentils will NOT enable you to survive. There will NOT be enough wild game and fish to live on due to so many thinking there will be enough! The variety has to be purchased now, and stored with your preps. Fish - canned fish of every kind, will be a tremendous help. Canned meats, including that horrible idea, Spam! All contain fish oil or animal fat, and are a great boost to the diet. Think about the variety you eat today, and find how much of that variety you can incorporate in your storage foods. Life depends on it!

Dried berries and other fruits. Peanut butter. Just think about everything you eat, and want to eat. The desire for those foods will only increase, not decrease.

Please do not consider your preparations complete with beans, rice, lentils, and oatmeal. That's only the barest minimum. I strongly hope nobody in this thread has limited their preps thusly - that scares me. If anybody has believed that will be adequate, please tell us what we need to do differently so that people will understand from their beginning in this thread that they MUST have a great variety of food when desperation comes around, in order to survive physically and mentally, and to be capable of doing the work that surviving will require.

Remember also a few taste treats - things you certainly do not need for nutrition and health, but that you will be so very glad to have. I have put away a few small things that I have deliberated not remembered - and when I run across them - just imagine the delight! A package of peanut butter and chocolate cookies, for example. When I hit that one, it will be celebration time!

Macaroni & Cheese - breathes there a soul so empty that would not find that a treat? Those packages, as long as the cheese in the packets is powdered, will last a long, long time in storage. I place mine in ziploc bags. If storage space is an issue, remove the contents from the box, write the cooking instructions on the ziploc bag or cut from box and insert in bag, and seal the paste and cheese packet in a bag. That would be a taste treat and a relief from the usual fare. Making pasta salads could still be possible, with just a little forethought. Perhaps not exactly as you would have made prior to SHingTF, but by then, it will seem ambrosia!

Just think about all the things you like to eat, and then think about tucking away some of this and some of that. After you read that person's comment on yt, you'll get it!

I wish the very best for all of you - from my heart. I think it may be soon, and I pray we don't lose contact, but if we do, pray for the people here, and I will be praying for you, for safety, for health, good nutrition, and that we will come together again.

One last thing - people of child-bearing age, please stock heavily on pregnancy prevention items - that's no time to try to carry a pregnancy to term and raise a baby with all the lacks. Please stock up on a variety of types, and please, above all, USE THEM. If we can restart the world, babies will be highly desirable and I hope you have a housefull! Until then, please be wise and careful.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Can't recall if I mentioned it here, but recently I was blessed to find another candle holder which is exactly like an oil or hurricane lamp, except that it holds a candle instead of oil. I've always had a cat or three, until now, and never wanted an open flame anywhere, and that has stuck with me. Now I have two which I would expect will be bathroom and kitchen, covering all the necessities. :)

Today I was looking in the thrift shop for candles and can see that others have been doing the same, as the price has gone wonky. Sixteen to eighteen tapers in a bag for ten dollars! Nuts to that!

I bought three tapers, one only half size because someone broke it, for .99, and some odds and ends. I was fortunate a few years ago at a yard sale and bought a shoe-box size storage box heaped up with votive candles. Still have a good share of them, which I usually use in a pot pourris to melt scented wax. Purchased a little holder today for one votive at a time, to use for lighting. A few other candles and holders.

Then I watch this video [below] and see that I should have gotten all the nearly used-up candles and made a new big one or several medium-sized! Rats! Now I know!

Do remember to place shortening where the wax will begin to melt, to save greatly on candle use.

This man has been through what we are preparing for and hoping not to face. Please read his story, and look carefully at what he says about amounts of water storage - where else have you heard that? You cannot have too much water stored!!!

Jeepster posted this video to the ebola thread, and it is critical information. Please, please watch it!

Dengue, West Nile, and, potentially, Ebola can be spread by mosquitoes.

I have often referred to my farm as "The Brazoria County Mosquito Hatchery".

However, I have decided to NUKE the mosquitos. I have been using a fogger, but will now add hose sprayed poison and granular poison designed for lawns.

My livestock will thank me as well.

It's actually an amazing movie with Ben McKenzie from Gotham, A fantastic movie that explores our near future. That has good twists and reveal.

It isn't often that I give this reccommendation but I think that you'll be well rewarded after 1:40 minutes.
