Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

I always tell people to store every bit as much water as they think they could conceivably need, then store four times that much. There just is not too much water possible! I read a man the other day who planned on one gallon per day per person in what I recall was a five-member household. Riiiight. One gallon per day MIGHT be enough for drinking. Won't do anything else, like cooking, bathing, flushing, dishes, laundry - nothing at all. However, this man was entirely sure he knew what he was doing and there was no room for advice or suggestions.

We are seeing that attitude more and more as other prepper threads come up. Some of us have been bringing up news and warnings often enough that now many GLPers, or at least part-time readers, have decided they already know everything there is to know about being ready for whatever is coming at us. They have nothing more to learn, and are quick to tell anyone trying to teach them something, and are rude indeed.

The amount of water needed by any human being is as much as they can use - and that is far more than any haphazard guess allows for it to be.

I am in a one-bedroom apartment in the middle of a city. How am I to prep for anything more than a hurricane? I only have a little bit of room to store things. I'm on the second floor and all that water storage looks heavy. The downstairs neighbors won't appreciate when my preps fall through their ceiling.

Seriously, I've got stuff stashed in the nooks and crannies, and I am okay for about a week, but no longer. If I prep like I see people doing in some of these videos, my apartment will look like a hoarder's home, with little pathways formed by stacks of boxes and jugs of water.

Every time I check in on this thread, I just feel doomed.

There are so many posts on here about how to keep stored water purified, how to purify water - what is your point? Save the darned water!!!! If you have the water, you can take care of it in any way needed before using, if it is no longer in perfect condition.

Any other questions about water being good to have in quantity?

I think you have a few choices - move into a more suitable place for prepping - doesn't have to be expensive - a ground-floor or basement apartment, a small house, etc. That's one.

Two: Don't come to this thread - which would be a shame, but if you will say you cannot move - as most do without even trying - there's no point in reading about things you really need to do but "cannot" do. Why upset yourself? Just plan to bug out and pray you can find a water source and not be killed in the process.

Three: You could see about a friend or family member with a more appropriate living situation, if you can thoroughly trust them, and you can be taking your preps to their house, helping them store water for all of you, and plan a way to get yourself to that place when the balloon goes up, or before, preferably.

I know what it is to say No, I cannot do that - which is probably what you said about moving to a different place. I have said that about things, without ever truly trying, truly looking through the options and possibilities.

Anybody having trouble finding cottage cheese? My discount grocery, where I have purchased it for years, for the past three weeks has had only the kind containing pineapple. I need to ask somebody there next time I see the problem and can catch an employee of that department.

Check out the nutrient content of sweet potatoes - the load of nutrients and the load of calories - a perfect food for what appears to be our future!! Also, they can be cooked in whatever means you have available - toss them into the coals of your wood fire. Roast in an oven. If power - microwave, bake, boil, steam, anything. They can also be eaten raw, and still provide all the calories and nutrition. A really elegant and excellent food for you and your family, and dogs like them, as well! Haven't tried them on cats, but you know cats - one day yes, next day no.

No problem getting cottage cheese but I would note that the supplies were dwindling yesterday. Still could have had my choice of brands but not many if I were in the mood to stock up.

Sprout and grow shelves, I do! A general idea of this concept mine is a hybrid.

Use a 24 x 48 shelves if you want to use a hydro trays to automate watering.
Get gro lights not shop if you want performance the correct color spectrum I use T5 fixtures and lamps.

Sprouts and micro greens in a week or so! I can do a 100 Lbs a week for the chickens and rabbits and ourselves! very little water use 5-10 gals a week.
My set up is self watering gravity, Feed or supply 5 gallon buckets on top a valve and 5 gallon buckets on the bottom for recovery then switch bottom to top or use a pump and timer for now. you need uni seals and some hydro hose
In a 2 foot by 4 foot rolling shelve unit with six shelves for ez moving. Four 2x4 low tide hydro trays. you can add gro lights or move it to a window


Water you can get a bladder bag they come in all sizes.

Barrels with seal-able lids and label them some thing no one will fuck with but not to cause alarm, like non potable water or put it in a community garden space add a tarp and some hoses say its for rain water recovery.

If you're thinking a classical Bug-Out Location is the perfect solution when SHTF, you might want to think again.
