Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
This is a post by Mariel Martinez that she placed below a video by Canadian Prepper. This is crucial information and a different take than what we have thought of in this country, because we have never experienced such a crisis!

Please read, think, and let's discuss!

ACTUAL EXPERIENCE HERE IN VENEZUELA
7 days no power
Other places 11 days
ACTUAL EXPERIENCE HERE IN Los Angeles North Ridge EarthQuake 1994 was a short term Local disaster duration of apx 4 weeks and effected apx 25 miles radius in the SFV
1. If you live in a good neighbourhood, NO PROBLEM. BAD neighbourhood, SORRY, FROM DAY ONE AT NIGHT, PEOPLE WILL CLIMB UP FENCES WALLS, WHATEVER, WILL STEAL EVERYTHING IN YOUR YARD, ESPECIALLY VALUABLES LIKE WATER PUMPS... This will happen in good neighbourhoods AFTER DAY 3. I am in Southern California Los Angeles The looting starts when the sun goes down everyday here!
2. PRICES OF EMERGENCY GENERATORS WILL BE IN THE THOUSANDS.... after day 2. I am a electrical cotractor and had a half dozen generators on hand some small 5kw and some 25kw trailer mounted, Made deals with gas station owners power for fuel so early morning like 3am they would have a line of people to fuel for a few hours every night! Had deals to power some freezers at the local markets so i need fuel
3. PEOPLE WILL GO SELL TIME ON GENERATORS TO CHARGE PHONES AND OTHER DEVICES. people will make lines for HOURS JUST TO GET THEIR CELL PHONE CHARGED. by the way, THOSE PLACES WILL BE ROBBED SEVERAL TIMES AND IN THOSE TIMES, YOU MAY BE BEATEN TO DEATH IF YOU RESIST GIVING UP YOUR PHONE (OR SHOT, OR STABBED)1994 North Ridge Earth Quake +12hrs started my generator turned around 2 of the neighbors were there with extension cords! I got 5gallons of gas for 2hrs of power a day from them for 2 weeks they had to get 75 gallons of gas for me.
4. people will freak after 4 hours BECAUSE THERE IS NO WIFI. THAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM...
5. people will start taking payments by online transactions (as in no card required, just you accessing a computer and making the transaction if the phone lines are still working (which they VERY LIKELY WORK for some time). This will become the norm after day 1. Cash or online transaction.Barter trading of necessities!
6. People will start panicking for gas (especially for generators) after 14 hours of the blackout. (at first everyone will think it is a fixable easy problem of a few hours, but half a day later and it is a whole new story)
7. People will start worrying about their food after the first 6 hours. In fact they will go and get ICE
AND THE PRICE OF THAT WILL BE PROBABLY ASTRONOMICAL if you can find it at all. 1994 North Ridge Earth Quake +24 everyone was BBQ everything It was a block party last of the cold beer!
8. People will go to restaurants and buy lots of cold food like sandwiches and things that require NO COOKING, since there is no water to clean up the mess of cooking. Places that have those will be jammed for business. No business open for anything in the area!
9. People will PANIC, FOR REAL, ABOUT WATER AFTER 2 HOURS OF THE POWER GOING OFF.
10. People with kids will have to be with them at all times... IT IS A BREAKING POINT FOR MOST PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE LINES WITH KIDS....AND YOU WILL IF YOU NEED OR WANT THE STUFF... THEY WILL COMPLAIN, GET SICK, DESTROY PROPERTIES, ETC.
11. If you have never carry water, SORRY, YOU WILL GET PAIN, BE TIRED, GET SICK, YOU WILL DESTROY THINGS BECAUSE IT IS NOT EASY. HELL, I SWEAR CARRYING WATER IS WORSE THAT YOU BUILDING PIPES FROM SCRATCH... I know because I have helped doing the second one and men... I would rather build the pipes and the water tank and all that... with certainty, no regrets, same choice FOREVER.
12. You better have lots of gloves and mask and suture kits in your medical kits... You WILL need those.
13. FIRE will be your greatest fear EVER if you go thru one (like I did and so many of my neighbours)The only light at night is the fires and no water to fight it!
14. You better be prepared for EARTHQUAKES NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE. you will experience them. Small, soft, whatever, but you will feel them because of explosions near by or other stuff.
15. Half the people would rather go and eat of the garbage than stealing... But the other half... well... that is another story. Dogs and defensive weapons
16. After day 3, most people will stop taking their medication. After a few weeks, SORRY... YOU WILL SEE PEOPLE JUMPING DOWN THE BUILDINGS AND NAKED RUNNING ON THE STREET AND PLENTY OF OTHER CRAZY STUFF, the men tend to suicide, women tend to run naked everywhere. Did not see any of that but paniced people doing crazy stuff many in autos speeding and not stopping for the intersections very unsafe mostly in the first 12 hours, some drove until they ran out of fuel hundreds of miles away!
17. People will be living on the gardens and backyards of their property and outside... inside it is NOT an option due to heat, or smells, or you being likely to be robbed because they just need to break a window and throw a molotov thing and you will have to open the doors and all that... so... no, most will just sleep outside, by the way, if it is summer, they may do it naked... If it is raining or something like that they may prefer go to the car and just camp there...
Most slept outside afraid of collapse
18. some people will make cages for their crazy and their elderly family members... You will see those cases ALL the time, because after they loose a aunt that is found naked hitting someone, or your dad that does not even know his name and he is giving away small pieces of info about you like they remember your car and where you work and if you have money and stuff like that... well, you do not want them outside and with no medication, they will hurt themselves or others... so... solution, locked them in your own house with no clothes, no windows, no nothing. This is especially truth for women. My elderly mother was in the hospital almost died she was telling people the she had lots of money at home in the closet, tried to give strangers everything millions! She had a para legal rewrite the trust and the pars legal tried to put herself as soul beneficiary! all from the stress of the illness she suffered, Shit i would of caged her if i could of!
19. Biggest problem for normal people... they break their glasses, and now, you cannot get one more... so, you are basically blind... This is NOT something that most people would even think about.
20. Most people WILL trow garbage EVERYWHERE THEY THINK IT IS OK, like... your backyard... YOU WILL GET IN TO THOSE KINDS OF PROBLEMS
Hurricane SandyPeople who live in apartments shit in buckets and put them out in the hallway!!!!

I've had to adapt recently since a farmer three miles north of me contracted EEE (Eastern equine encephalitis) through mosquito exposure. Mostly I stay inside in the evenings and make sure that I apply mosquito repellent if I do go outside. Education about the disease helps you avoid exposure and recognize symptoms early if they develop.

Can't wait for winter.

Very unfortunate development happening here.

I purchased my farm for CASH planning to stay here until I am gone. But...

A larger nearby city is going to annex our small town.

They plan on turning the country road in front of my homestead into a 4 lane highway heading up into Houston. They will take out my garden and fruit trees in the front yard.

We are going to MOVE before this happens.

I am looking at acreage North of Houston in the piney woods or West into the farmland.

Its not all bad.

Wifey has only ONE condition: She wants to be able to shoot off fireworks! Her father, an entrepreneur in the Old Country, owned a fire works factory.

First, will use Texas Vets Land Loan to buy property. Then, will put in a large barn and a Tornado Magnet (mobile home). Then, when my old farm is sold to become a new housing development, I will build Wifey a wonderful new home.

I am just glad this happened while I am still in my 70s and can work hard outdoors on the new farm.

BTW, I have planted Moringa trees which do OK here. Wifey says the leaves are very healthy to eat.

I asked her how she knew.

She said, "Mi Abuelo ate Moringa every day".

I asked, "Well, was he healthy?"

She replied, "He was 109 years old and got drunk and fell off his horse. That's what killed him".

So, I gotta eat Moringa leaves every day.

It seems as though we are going to be in for a rough winter, so I started searching for SHTF type heating systems in case of power outage. For indoor heating propane could be dangerous, just like kerosene. So, this seems to be safe, cheap and easy to use.

This is made with 4 tea lights, 2 clay pots and a muffin pan.

There are plenty of these types of heaters on youtube, so you can search out what works best for you. Also, research the safety as I only did a small search but not an in depth one.

Darth, I am unable to speak, nearly, at the very thought of this. Every one of us could put ourselves into your position and understand the feelings of encroachment, invasion, assault of our very life plans - while I am thankful you can see some good in it and move forward - I still see this as horrific abuse of a tax-paying, landowning citizen. How dare they? No grasp whatever of a person's life, age, plans, health, nothing at all. "We want - therefore we take" - Period! I'm so sorry, Darth. Ugliness entirely!

Will they pay for what they are taking? Are you able to get such a loan at your age? Why can't we elders just be left the hell alone, or even assisted in some way - not harrassed, moved, all of it.

As to the moringa leaves, I'm not so sure that's a good idea. Obviously, they will give you delusions of being a horse-back rider, which could come to a bad end.

ROfl - are you shipping moringa leaves to all your friends here?

Love you, NolaAngel!

Honey, these are pretty dangerous, I fear. Please do not even consider if you have a dog or cat. You know how they get sometimes, and one playful moment could mean your home burning down. Those heaters also are not very warming, from what I have read. If that is what you choose to do, get cement blocks or red bricks to stack around three sides of the ceramic dish heater, because they will absorb some of the heat and reflect it back into the room long after the burning stops.

I've searched, too, for the best answer for heating since mine is all electric. I talked to a number of knowledgeable people, one especially who knows everything there is to know about prepping, even though he tells me he learns more every day.

What I settled on, with good advice, is [link to www.amazon.com (secure)]
I will be using a forty-pound propane tank, believe it or not, just because I have two. I asked very seriously and carefully what the dangers are for using propane in the home, and then what the dangers are for using a larger tank in the home, larger than the one pound tank.

The danger turns out to be bad connections, allowing leaking propane around the heater and/or tank. That's so easy to detect = use soapy water on every place of connection. If ANY bubbles blow, take it apart and redo that connection, then recheck. If still blowing bubbles, purchase new parts for the connection.

Thus, this is my plan.

Purchasing multiple one-pound canisters of propane to keep the heater going is very expensive and wasteful. There is a connector that would fill the one-pound from a larger tank, and that's do-able. However, I asked my exquisitely knowledgeable friend why I shouldn't do that, and he said because there isn't more chance of explosion with a larger tank than a smaller tank. Only difference is size of explosion. Even if you used a smaller tank, you would still be wise to check connections with soapy water.

Do whatever seems safest and most efficient to you, my dear. We want safety most of all, followed by efficient use of our money.

Back to my apples. Hugs for you!

Why do you call this radio a "prepper card"? It adds nothing about preps that I can see.

JD, this radio will only serve you as long as power is on, cell towers work, etc.

When I saw the word "radio" in your title,I thought sure you had purchased a ham radio for communications when SHTF.

This radio will be lovely on your trip, and didn't cost very much, so no harm done, as long as you understand it is not a prep and has nothing to do with preps.

Glad for you to have your new radio, JD! Especially since you are about to embark on a long trip and can use your cellphone hands free!!

I'm just pointing out it has nothing to do with a prepper or preparation - you require an engine that will still run after an EMP or CME - and you need access to a great deal of gas, which of course will not be available after a grid down situation, because power is required to pump gas.

So many things can keep a vehicle useless, and if a person has a vehicle that runs after grid down, it will be stolen almost immediately by a group with guns.

This is great for your trip, JD, and a wise purchase for that! It is terrific addenda to a long cross-country trip, but it isn't preparing for anything but your trip! See what I mean?

Wishing you great caution and safe travel - and some real joy along the way - nice people, surprisingly good food when you stop for a meal, and the best of blessings on your arrival at the other end!

The LDS [Mormons] are the very best at stocking for a year, as it is a requirement in their church.

AC7840, I am delighted you are enjoying this thread so much, and in great hopes you are preparing your family very well!

LDS have great "kitchens" in certain areas across the country, where non-LDS people are allowed in to use their equipment and can their own purchases, after the LDS folks are done for the day.

LDS will also bring foods from their cannery to you general location, if you live a distance from the cannery, as I do. Order and pay. They will call you when they have brought the latest load, and you go get your items.'

LDS has the lowest-cost preparedness foods of anyone in the country. You have happened onto a treasure, indeed!

Pooka:

Continuing to watch and learn from this thread as I have from page one. Continued thanks!

I ran across this link today. Not a Mormon, but found their preparedness list to be the most detailed, comprehensive list I have run across to date with 222 pages.

Anyways, for anyone interested here's the pdf link:

The LDS [Mormons] are the very best at stocking for a year, as it is a requirement in their church.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

Pooka, thanks for the kind words.

The motive involved is MONEY.

The big developers to the South of us keep throwing up houses on every available piece of land. The people moving to the new houses need to get to jobs in Houston. They need the new 4 lane highway because the other routes are too crowded.

The city that is annexing us wants more property TAX money. Therefore, they want residential property everywhere.

I don't know how much they will pay to take out 1/2 acre of my front yard, but I will get an attorney to make sure we are fairly compensated if necessary.

As for a loan at my age, it will be temporary. When I sell my place to the developers, I will get enough to pay off the new place.

As for morninga, no, not selling or shipping them. However, I am eating them.

Ref the horse, my daughter has a good one, but I don't ride him. At my age, I don't want to break anything.
