Okay I have tried to post this, in segments even about 15 times so I'll simply rewrite it, in segments since I can't seem to find anything that could be 'wrong with it'...it's about gardening fer fox lake...

Go to a park that is seldom used. Underneath the useless/decorative shrubs, plant. The three plants I recall from an interview that the host (a metals-tard and Permie seemingly) mentioned were potatoes, peanuts/grubers (whatever you call them) and sunchokes.

Segment 2:

The reason for choosing these plants (I would add garlic, beets and chives) is because they can all deal with being topped by machinery and no one barely knows what they look like. It is what is underground that counts. Make a map of where you have planted these things.

Now your harvest is not going to be huge but once the initial outlay for the tubers is done, it is a self-perpetuating system.

Segment 3

This will take some effort on your part to find what tubers will flourish where you are at where the foliage will not be a dead give away. Also plants that don't mind a trim (none of the 3 above do) now and then. And then look for other spaces, the sunside of hedges that grow along seldom used sidewalks etc. Use your imagination, that is why God gifted it to us.

If you have vacant lots that have sat forever you may want to consider weeds that are quite awesome, self seed and run amok. Something like [link to www.ediblewildfood.com (secure)] Now these would be worth while making seedballs [link to seed-balls.com (secure)] for and scattering everywhere since no one knows wtf lambs quarters are. Plus you can find a strain that has a beautiful magenta splash on the leaves. The whole plant is edible and if no one is paying attention to some place...a day fucking around with some seeds and clay and then driving or walking about tossing them can be made into an adventure.

How about 'decorative yams/sweet potatoes'? I've seen the same plant called both here in peoples larger planters since it is a beauty of a vine if picked for the vine itself. No matter what the wonder of colour of the leaves are...it still produces edible tubers. Plant them along disused fence lines...unused portions of school yards etc. Heck plant them anywhere. If I can go at end of season and pick up old ones here I'm sure you can do the same. Or just buy one and grow it out one season and start with numerous tubers next year.

Plant anything useful to you, near you, keep a map of where you have done so, and keep expanding and expanding. I'm glad I have a functional Keyboard again. Cheerio!

Sorry for the broken syntax and grammar and such but you get my point. I had to rewrite some bits and C&P others from my original. I still can't figure out why the thing in its original entirety wouldn't post and to date no mod has gotten back to me aside from one who I hadn't even written who was just being a nice fellow about another topic.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
It seems as though we are going to be in for a rough winter, so I started searching for SHTF type heating systems in case of power outage. For indoor heating propane could be dangerous, just like kerosene. So, this seems to be safe, cheap and easy to use.

This is made with 4 tea lights, 2 clay pots and a muffin pan.

There are plenty of these types of heaters on youtube, so you can search out what works best for you. Also, research the safety as I only did a small search but not an in depth one.
 Quoting: NOLAangel

Love you, NolaAngel!

Honey, these are pretty dangerous, I fear. Please do not even consider if you have a dog or cat. You know how they get sometimes, and one playful moment could mean your home burning down. Those heaters also are not very warming, from what I have read. If that is what you choose to do, get cement blocks or red bricks to stack around three sides of the ceramic dish heater, because they will absorb some of the heat and reflect it back into the room long after the burning stops.

I've searched, too, for the best answer for heating since mine is all electric. I talked to a number of knowledgeable people, one especially who knows everything there is to know about prepping, even though he tells me he learns more every day.

What I settled on, with good advice, is [link to www.amazon.com (secure)]
I will be using a forty-pound propane tank, believe it or not, just because I have two. I asked very seriously and carefully what the dangers are for using propane in the home, and then what the dangers are for using a larger tank in the home, larger than the one pound tank.

The danger turns out to be bad connections, allowing leaking propane around the heater and/or tank. That's so easy to detect = use soapy water on every place of connection. If ANY bubbles blow, take it apart and redo that connection, then recheck. If still blowing bubbles, purchase new parts for the connection.

Thus, this is my plan.

Purchasing multiple one-pound canisters of propane to keep the heater going is very expensive and wasteful. There is a connector that would fill the one-pound from a larger tank, and that's do-able. However, I asked my exquisitely knowledgeable friend why I shouldn't do that, and he said because there isn't more chance of explosion with a larger tank than a smaller tank. Only difference is size of explosion. Even if you used a smaller tank, you would still be wise to check connections with soapy water.

Do whatever seems safest and most efficient to you, my dear. We want safety most of all, followed by efficient use of our money.

Back to my apples. Hugs for you!
 Quoting: Pooka

Good advice Pooka. I have been looking at the propane heater that you posted and also looking at this kerosene one too: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] .

The downside of kerosene is it can get really expensive, but supposedly it is safe for indoor use.

The good thing about the propane heater that you posted is that you can convert it and use the bigger tanks like you said. I have several 5 gallon tanks that I would use for that one. I think with the propane, I would keep a window opened a bit just to be safe and as you said use detectors.

hugs5 for ya.

Darth, I'm not generally angry or vindictive, but I relate so closely to you losing what you intended and worked to be your life-long home, that I sincerely hope you take the developers to the cleaners, BIGLY. Same with being paid for what the gubmint wants to take - fairly compensated not just for your property they need, but fairly compensated for the shock, the emotional stress, the horror at losing your life-long home.

I am really upset for you - this is a very very bad thing - work all your life, have plans for your home being yours forever, the blood, sweat and tears you have put into your home and land = then greed takes over and you are out - just not acceptable.

Hope you come out a multimillionaire!

I'm so sorry you had such trouble!

Yes, what you are saying is a great idea, as long as the park is not using chemical insecticides and fertilizers. Nice to have that food to harvest and if for some reason the planter moves on, another smart gardener will be along and recognize the plants, just when they were about to die without food, so it's a great plan all around!

Thank you, Lance, and again, I don't understand why you didn't get my messages, or answer them.

Love this idea, Lance - I am going to start looking for space around here. At the end of the street is an overgrown mess, but I would be observed. I'd have to think of a plant there I want to pick or dig up or something, so that I could clean areas and drop in seeds. I really, really appreciate this advice, Lance!

I think the PM system got screwed up (like quotes do now and then)...It's okay, I did it all in segments and it isn't as easy-flow of a read but the point is still there. As far as ferts and sprays in general...keep reading the segments...You are creating a stock of tubers to keep planting over and over again. Just keep spreading them....in a few short years you could have hundreds of hidey-hole gardens and most people would be oblivious.

Congratulations on the new kbd! You sure suffered long enough with the old one!

I have purchased "sweet potato vines" as plants for h anging planters. No idea if they would really produce if in a larger space, or if they have been adapted to be small and only produce leaves.

Sweet potatoes are so incredibly healthy, and filling, and full of calories - a true miracle food for preppers.

Where did you mean you go at the end of season and pick up old ones?

I have four purchased to eat ages ago, that have sprouted leaves in a few places, so I am saving them to plant. I really, really want a good crop of them, whatever it takes. I can only plant in containers here, and am hoping they will accommodate me and produce gladly and greatly!

Thank you again for sharing all these segments with us!

I go to Vancouver 2x a month normally so I go to a few gardens where they grow decorative yams in large (75-100 gallon) concrete planters and rummage through them and bring home 2 meals. I leave most of the tubers I just pluck out enough for 2 meals. Om average they are about 7" long and 2.5-3" wide. The rest are smaller. The plant seems to pump certain ones up.

I, too, thought about kerosene, but somehow it is scarier to me in terms of fire than the propane is.

If I had five gallon tanks instead of forty I would rather use those as well. I cannot move these myself, unfortunately, and would have to call my helper. I'd rather do it myself. :) Being independent as heck, five gallons would be nicer. Perhaps I will spot one in my travels that someone has decided to sell inexpensively. There is a way to transfer propane from one size tank to another, and that would be doable. My helper would take the big tanks to be filled, and we would use from the five.

If I have to use the heater, and I just have a feeling that will happen this winter, I'll place a new battery in the C02 detector, and where the tank is going to sit is my kitchen, just around the corner from my living room. I can open the door from kitchen to garage for ventilation if needed.

Honey, if you are going to use the propane, please use the soapy water and a brush to check connections before you turn it on, each time, okay? Promise? I want you to be safe! I promise to do the same! We cannot let ourselves and our furkin freeze, and I'm afraid the candle thing you were thinking of is not going to put out much heat. It was suggested to me, as well, but I don't think it's really something we could count on. Even with the propane, we may need to put blankets over doorways to hold the heat where we spend the most time.

I'm very glad you are planning ahead in this way - so many are not, will not. They will be so angry with themselves when they realize how foolish they have been! We will at least be semi-warm, which is far better than those with nothing!

How are your other preps going, sweety? How are you doing on water - at least three gallons per day, and food, and everything else we are going to need? I have a number of gallons put away, and am ready with a new garbage can to collect rain water on the deck. Food - well - I have two bags of beans and two bags of rice. Not the big big bags, but like forty pounds of beans, I think, and twenty of rice? Or maybe the bags are half that - I don't remember. I do remember how hard it was to carry them in, especially the beans.

I have been practicing trying to grow vegetables in buckets - actually have two squash plants up now, and plan to bring them into the garage before long and buy a light to put over them - another experiment. I've a lot of juices, and a couple cans of dry potato soup mix, and am starting now on flour, sugar, yeast. Was lucky on a few meat sales so my freezer is stocked for a couple months, anyway, thank Goodness. If the grid goes down, the neighbors have a barbecue so I would ask them to cook mine while they cook theirs. Hope that doesn't happen - we would have to gorge on meat for a couple days, and so would the furkin. Then do without for goodness knows how long!

So lovely to chat with you, sweet NOLA Angel! Been a while!~

The winter is going to be bad. Not only have I heard this from someone with government intel in another thread on here, but also from a Godly source. I did not really take it serious until the Godly source chimed in. Even if it does not devastate me this far south, it will be cold and will affect food routes so their will be shortages.

As far as safety, yes that is my number one concern. It does no good to prep if you are not around to use it. I decided to go with the propane option as I just think that would be a lot easier and safer with the right precautions.
So, I bit the bullet and went out and purchased it and the connector adapter today.

Good for you for prepping long term foods like beans and rice. This is so important and most don't do it. We have plenty of long term food that has a 30 year shelf life and short term stuff too. If you are growing vegetables, they work okay in buckets, but we use Styrofoam ice chests for smaller plants like green onions, parsley and other herb type plants. They allow the soil to breathe and drain. My dad grew up on a farm and has my backyard turned into a mini farm. LOL!
Squash grow well in the spring....they do not like summer heat or winter cold. Also, if you bring them in you will have to pollinate the female flower with a male flower.

Cabbage, broccolli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts love the winter. If it gets below 28 degrees F for over 24 hours, you have to protect them. They would probably do well in buckets. Look up winter crops for your area. We have a summer garden and a winter garden. When the summer one dies out we re-till and plant for the winter.

As far as cooking, I have a propane mini burner stove, a propane grill and I also found a good video on a brick rocket stove. Not sure if you have seen this, but it looks really neat:

Edited to add that the best water filter is the Berkey water filter system. We have it and absolutely love it. It can even filter pond or river water and make it drinkable. This is the one that we have: [link to www.berkeyfilters.com (secure)]

Read the comments below video, as well, for more ideas and advice, especially the John Lord comment.

It is good to be here Pooka. hugs When I started investigating this stuff, something told me to post in here for advice and I am glad that I did. I just feel a spiritual urge to start fine tuning my prepping and there is a few things I need to get ready. You have some really good posts and posters in here. So....thank you.

As far as back up heat, I went with the one you posted. [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] I found it at Academy Sports store and I also got the adapter for the bigger propane tanks.

That led me down another rabbit hole for CO detectors. I researched plenty and decided that going too cheap is not an option because you need to be able to detect low levels too. There are plenty of reviews on Amazon stating why this is so important. So, I think I am going to get the Defender LL6070 Low Level Carbon Monoxide Monitor-Alarm. It is kind of pricey so I will have to wait another few weeks to get it, but it is well worth the money spent.

Hello
I see some posts about propane!
for storing fuel is the best choice, it has a very long shelve life! unlike gas or diesel.
Most engines can be converted to run on it.
