Here's some food for thought - massive produce thefts in southern Michigan and northern Indiana.

Freeloaders aren't gonna organize and do middle of the night surgical strike raids like this but there's got to be an incentive for the people who are able.

Also, it's a lesson for smaller holdings when things get tough. You will be a target if you appear negligent in watching over your resources.

Edit: I'm reminded of that movie "Deadly Harvest" where black marketeers would make raids into the countryside to steal livestock and whatever they could find.

I would recommend you also get that special Banquet deal, JD, because you need to build up preps quickly. This is the best place to order from for quality of food.

Please tell us you are already purchasing big bags of beans and rice and a lot of other preps, now that you are where you intend to stay in the area.

People, a good thing to consider, if you have not, to add to your preps is a drone! Many uses - see if the trail ahead of you is clear. See if anyone is following you. Check out your cabin or other bug-out location to be certain it is clear. If sheltering in place, use it around you to see what is near, what is coming, any dangers lurking? In general, a good prep if affordable for you. Right after Christmas, if we should wait so long, would be a great time for sales, and so would January/Feb/March.
This does not come before water and food. Also not before communications, i.e. HAM radios. Should also not come before ammo, if you are planning to use any. However, it is right up there with some of the other tools for survival, in my opinion.

Be certain to have HAM radios, as well, tuned to your local area so you know what is going on. This is likely the only way to communicate, and definitely the only way to find out what is going on locally - actions in the area, etc. Don't want to write very clearly here but the smart ones know what I mean.

Drone is a really good idea~ *noted* Pooka

I need a pair of night vision goggles that are good at a reasonable price. If anyone knows please advise~
I'm afraid the reviews I'm lookin at are tooting their own horn. For that type of $$ I want to get some input first.

Weird this is brought up, they have drones that follow you and avoid obstacles that have camera’s. I was looking in them the other week for some reason, think just day dreaming. They are about a grand, which really is not that bad.

Yep, in sleepy little Ozark town now, its picturesque, staying here the winter til I can get land. Still setting up everything.

The place is a tiny one bedroom apt in an old 1920 depression era boarding house that was turned apartments.

We are required to care for our furkin, birds, any pets at all, as well as any livestock, from little chickens to huge bulls and everything in between - they are totally dependent upon us and we must care for them just as we care for ourselves, meaning in preparations as well as day to day in normalcy.

Thank you, KTee - I hope every person who is responsible for any sort of living creature will prep at least as well for them as they do for themselves - better would be good. We might forage for ourselves, but our dogs and cats will not be interested in eating dandelions or spinach as a steady diet.

I posted this in the food shortage thread but thought that it was worth cross posting here for more visibility:
Thread: I ADVISE YOU TO CLICK THIS! It has begun. FOOD SHORTAGES. (Page 34)

Just found a report that studied the movement of food in and out of each county in the US.
[link to www.fastcompany.com (secure)]

It can be pretty hard going at some points, especially if you go to the actual report that is linked there, but basically it points out why the fires in California matter to the rest of the country - of the top 10 counties sending food out, nine of them are in California.

Combine that with potential poor harvests in the Corn Belt and we suddenly have a perfect storm in front of us.

I haven't had to endure a power outage over three days yet where I am but my sister had to deal with an outage that lasted a month and a half where she was located. (I happen to have a hydroelectric dam a half mile from me)

Moving forward, we can't depend on utilities giving a first world level of service. Be ready.
