Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

The food recalls have fascinated me for months. I've been following them closely and for the past month or so it's been almost entirely protein sources. I do not for one second believe these foods are bad and being destroyed. I believe they are stocked for people far more important than us little folks. They will eat very well in their cavernous underground luxury resorts, while we feel thrilled if we can find a dandelion or a rabbit.

What our world hs come to sickens and saddens my heart. Unbelievable this wonderful nation has become a matter of lies, ugliness, division, and hate. God help us all.

Good job on continuing to prep. Remember four gallons of water per day per person, and remember lots of protein sources, as well. Canned meats and fish, especially. Naturally lots of beans and a lot ofrice to go with, making a complete protein. Just keep stocking!

Exactly right! I have an old moth-eaten army wool blanket in the car that I've kept in various vehicles forever.Now I want to wrap my huge new wool blanket in plastic and stick it in there also. It will wrap the dogs and me up and have room left for most of you! I'm thankful to have a little more time before the earthquake to be better prepared both physically and mentally.

Totally love your post and adventure! So funny, in a sad sort of way, that people suddenly find you are not quite as crazy as they once thought. Did you find that some people wanted to ask you questions but didn't want anybody to know they were interested? I'm sure some felt that way - love it!

We don't have wild hogs here, unless a few east of the mountains but I don't think so. Everything I've heard about them is very scary - is it not frightening to hunt them? No fear of one coming after you? I'd be terrified.

Three deer is legal there? I think here the limit is one. Just amazing how well you did, and how much meat you have been able to put away! Hope you have a generator for the freezers!

I see some of you are having issues red pilling fam and friends! As I have also my wife of 30+ yrs is a un-preper.
She does not want to spend any money on it. She does not pay attention to the real world news, She is a disney girl, Lives in a fair tail world where shit does not happen! Yea and I am her prince!
In her defense, I will panic buy or a great deal will come up!
Our priorities are way different!
She wants a new phone, kitchen remodel, ect.
I want to improve / expand the Garden, long term food rotation, security, small animals rabbits and poultry.

The last few months, Adding quail and more chickens, I have to set up incubation, brooders, cages, watering, ect.

My top responsibility is to protect and provide for my loved ones!

So we compromise! I try to keep a budget of 5-10%

Short term food, Pantry full and Medical and Hygiene is her responsibility! Fail she wont do it! Or she thinks a extra bottle of aspirin and toilet paper will do!

Long term food storage,My goal of one year, for 10 people 5,400,000 calories is complete a few years ago! Always want to add more!

Myself prepping is my life style, urban farm I have 1 acre in Los Angeles foothills zoned unlimited agriculture, been here for 50+ years, My Father RIP was a farm boy from PA. As a child I was allergic to cow milk so we had some goats, some chickens, horses and other animals. Always had a large garden and pops put in dozens of dwarf fruit trees all mature now.
One of pops preps is a rain water recovery system, gutters on everything, three inch pipe to several 500 gallon tanks.

Gotta go! put better roof on the rabbit chicken pens! it rained the other day and more coming!

Why I prep

Our state wide limit is 6 deer per hunter with 2 that must be a buck with 6 points or more, we have several hogs that we hunt with our AR's with night vision, yes they can come after you so it helps to have side arms as well. I should get the test results back this week, and then I'll process the meat further, right now it's mainly just quartered and in the freezer. I also have a lot of fish stocked in my pond, and I'm going to get some chickens and build a coup this spring.

I can tell y’all, the meat we’re getting in is old. After cutting for two weeks here it’s obvious. Mgr said he’s never seen it like this before. Get meat and freeze while you can. Meat is something I really know, have 15 years experience as a meat cutter. Something is wrong, I know what it is and shouldn’t have to tell you. Old meat being parsed out to stores and run big ass sales. Key is, is there backup? I think not.

This is very important information for which we thank you - and fascinating, as well. I believe the "good stuff" has gone to underground luxury accommodations for those who matter and we are left with bad and the ugly, and then none.

Yep chicken has gone to crap aswell. Talked to my meat mgr today about it. BTW, he is in no way onb any type of forums like this or clued in to conspiracy truths. He's just stating what he knows.

In Texas, we use live traps to catch the hogs.

That way, you can shoot them in the trap safely. That is, unless the small hog in the trap has Big Bad Momma Sow outside. She will often attack to protect her baby.

Hogs are admirable creatures, smart, tough, brave, and loyal. They are also a supreme pest that we need to eradicate.

As mentioned elsewhere, I put a plastic tub in my traps with corn, some sugar, water, and yeast. They LOVE beer and will stay happily drunk until you return. Probably tenderizes them too.

I don't put sweet stuff like syrup in traps because deer will crawl in there. Had to call the Game Warden once and tell him that I had a young buck in my trap. The buck had severely injured himself trying to escape and could not survive.

Game Warden told me to shoot the buck and eat him, so I did.

Funny story: At my deer lease, some drunken Good Ol' Boys shot a 300 lb. boar in the head after he was trapped. Thought he was dead with THREE .40 S&W rounds in his brain.

One guy crawls into the trap to attach a rope to haul the boar out.

Boar wakes up! He is blind, but furious.

Boar charges out past the guy and hooks the guy's pantleg with his tusk.

A merry sleigh ride ensues with the boar dragging the victim through the mud.

The whole time, the victim's brother was running alongside trying to shoot the boar in the head with a .44 mag.

The victim was frantic yelling "DON'T SHOOT! YER GONNA HIT MY LEG!"

I was not there, but the stories were hilarious.

BTW, I tried to NOT hunt when the drunken bunch was there. They were dangerous to be around.

Postscript: they shot the boar in the head with a 9 MM.

Hauled it back to camp and hung it up to skin. When the guy tried to cut the throat, the hog bit him!

A 20 gauge shotgun in the ear finally put the hog down.

Pistol rounds don't always do the job on big hogs.

I did so good for a while late last summer on chicken that I am well stocked with boneless, skinless breasts, several packages of drumsticks, etc. Great stuff, all repackaged and frozen just waiting for tastebuds to summon. Can't remember how many pkgs of breasts - a lot.

Your warnings to us are a Godsend - thank you so much! Could even save some lives!

I don't have a lot of beef - may go looking for some shortly. A store at the beach has good quality, if the prices are good - they have a lot of sales.

Regarding fish, if you-all would watch Mike Moral-s and the bunker oil spraying all our oceans, you would not eat any saltwater fish of any kind, not to mention the immense amount of radiation already present and being added to.

The one-burner butane stove has gone back down to $20! If somebody hasn't gotten one and could use it, these really are sweet and so handy!

so I clicked and one thing i bought for some friends was vegetable stew 4 gallon bucket for
last year $70.00 18 pounds, 388 servings at 80 cals each 31040 total calories at .18 cents a serving.
This year $70.00 12 pounds, 236 servings at 80 cals each. 18880 total calories at .29 cents per serving

30% Dam glad I got plenty last year!!

I listened to a podcast earlier today about the smaller package and lesser contents on supermarket shelves for the same price. Nice way to do it it - "See - just the same as it used to be!!" Not many catch on to the size change.

A few years ago I was amazed to see the change in size of ice cream cartons. Still have never heard anyone else mention the change. Price remained similar.

Auguson farms foods are so great - guess I feel both surprised and sorry they did this, without speaking up. Of course, food is much higher now, and they certainly are in business to make a profit, as well as to help many of us get through the future. Still, a warning would have been gracious of them.

My philosophy of food storage.

I saved my money and bought a pallet from Rainy Day:

Calories/dollar is hard to beat. You can buy it packaged in the mylar bags with oxygen absorbers in the food grade bucket. A bit more expensive, but some of those foods will be safe for your great grand children to eat.

I bought a good grain grinder years ago and the taste of fresh ground multi-grain flour makes great bread.

I like to bake bread using molasses. A piddly small bottle in Wallymart is over $3. I bought a 6 gal. bucket from Walton (purchased by Rainy Day) and am still using it almost 10 years later. BTW, I heated the molasses above 212F and poured it into gallon glass jars that had been sterilized dry in the oven. No mold after 10 years and more convenient for use.

I have also visited the local restaurant supply for 50 lb. bags of beans, rice, sugar, etc. In that case, I bought 6 gallon food grade buckets with gamma lids from Uline. I bought the mylar bags and oxygen absorbers from:

I also got a 50 lb. bag of food grade diatomaceous earth from Amazon and added a cup to each 6 gal. bucket of grain or beans. Insurance against insects.

Sugar and salt can even be stored in your garage or barn in a metal drum or clean trash can. Just put it in mylar bags or glass jars first. Heat does not affect them.

Of course, I have a stocked pantry for short term use.

For long term survival I have a tractor and seed.

This morning I was out taking care of my livestock. My geese have their own small pasture now. For some reason, my chickens lay more eggs when the geese are not around, so I separated the geese. I think the geese bullied the chickens and hogged the food.

Dumped out the wading pool for the geese to put in fresh water. What fertilizer they produce! Gooey rich mud.

I plan to plant that small pasture in corn next Spring because the geese will load the soil with nitrogen while removing all vegetation.

Hope my prepping experience helps some of you.

I should have added, if you can save up $1000-2000 cash over a year, you can buy an entire pallet of food prepackaged for long term storage.

If you cannot have it delivered where there is a forklift, you can simply remove the plastic pallet wrap when the pallet is on the truck and unload the buckets individually.

The do-it-yourself approach with the restaurant supply is the cheapest, but I trust the pros to do the long term storage better than I can.

Get the cookbook, Passport to Survival, about cooking with the Mormon Four (wheat, powdered milk, honey, and salt. You can survive mainly on those with some ingenuity.

BTW, I have eaten a lot of freeze dried food while backpacking. Not a fan. Expensive for the calories you get.

You can actually make your own equivalents for a lot less. Check the backpacker food videos on utube.

One more thing!

The LDS church has a store in most urban areas. You don't have to be a member to shop there.

Look them up on the web.

From their price list I see that they have a lot of long term food in number 10 cans.

Sad day at the farm today.

We recently got a couple of Siberian Huskys with papers to breed. We make more money off of selling puppies than livestock.

Dogs are separated from the goat pasture by a fence topped by electric hot wire.

Someone unplugged the fence charger.

Huskys apparently took the opportunity to jump the fence last night.

Now, I have one goat that survived. Had to put the others on a big brush pile and cremate them this afternoon.

I think I am done with goats. Have lost them to coyotes and bobcats as well.

Will sell or gift the remaining goat.

I may buy a milk cow to keep the horse company. Maybe a donkey that will kick the dog's asses if they try to harass my livestock again.

That's how things go when you have livestock.

Yup, I was pretty upset with the huskies, but they seem to be closer to wolves than other dogs. Hunting and killing is in their nature.

At first I told The Queen that I wanted to sell them. Then, reconsidered.

The huskies and my two German Shepherds are a major part of my physical security plan. Anyone wishing to get to my house has to get past a 6 foot chain link fence with electric hot wire on top, 5 big dogs, and then our firearms.

Truth is, I feel safer with the dogs guarding the house 24X7.

So, I will simply get livestock that they cannot kill should they jump the fence again.

Today I ran another set of insulators above the original hotwire and strung it. Now, the two hotwires make it almost impossible for them to jump. Also moved some farm equipment away from the fence so they cannot jump from a higher perch.

I found and cleared some branches off the hot wire where they touched. Tested and have over 5,000 volts now. I love fence chargers. Spend a little more and get one more powerful. I ran 150 feet of new hotwire fence in about 10 minutes. Fastest, easiest way to go. You just snap new insulators on the T posts and string the wire.

If SHTF, I can rig a transformer with an inverter and batteries to deliver about 600V AC which should greatly discourage looters.

Remaining goat is safe and happily living with my chickens.

Found that the bonfire did not fully consume the dead goats, so I dug a pit with my backhoe for the remains today. Actually much less work to bury than cremate. If SHTF, we will have lots of bodies to bury. Just have to know someone with a backhoe.

I was thinking about buying a donkey. They are cheap. Have heard they take no grief from coyotes or dogs. Anybody got suggestions?

BTW, The Queen was just gifted 7 BIG ducks, those weird looking cross-bred kind. The hens are already giving us eggs and the drakes look tasty.

I got the goats to eradicate poison ivy which they did. Perhaps just time for bigger livestock.

Downside of electric fence: I was way out in the back pasture and found the hot wire arcing to the fence wire below. Did not want to walk back to the house to unplug the charger.

Tried to cut an obstruction with my pocket knife and YIKES the 5000 volts arced into my right hand, traveled to my left on the fence, and kick started my heart on the way.

Will not make that mistake again.

I'll bet the livestock and predators quickly learn to respect the hot wire.

BTW, for you preppers with a BOL, consider stringing a very thin copper wire on insulators around your cabin perimeter. Some fence chargers can run on solar or 12V. If small enough it will be almost invisible.

Looters encountering such a wire in the dark will announce their presence!
