MarkinAZ User ID: 16624192 ![]() 01/24/2019 04:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Depends on how and where you live. Living in NYC and needing a housekeeper, a cook, and a gardener to care for a large home plus add in a couple of kids and you need a nanny to care for the kids when Mom and Dad are out pulling in the dollars. Private Schools can run $50k per year per child in major metro areas. And in some of those areas, private schools are a necessity if you don’t want your 12 year old daughter raped and pregnant or on drugs, or both. |

Midwest Skeptic User ID: 72052582 ![]() 01/24/2019 04:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It depends upon WHERE YOU LIVE. If you make $200k and live in NYC remember taxes are going to take 40% of that off the top. If you then need to live in Manhattan because of work etc., a basic 1 BR apt is going to run you a minimum of $7k per month (nice one about 12k to 15k per month) ... so your disposable income is now down to $36k after taxes and rent. Have a kid? Good luck coming up with the minimum of $3k/mo for the tuition to a so-so school with only 36k left to spend if you don't want your kids bussed up to Harlem or to the Bronx for school (so as to "equalize" Blacks and Whites in the classrooms). If you then want to keep a car in the city anywhere close to you then you better budget another 1k per month minimum or so (many people keep cars OUT of the city, or in one of the outer Boroughs but then need to take public transit for 30 to 60 minutes to get to their car at a cost of $500 to $700/mo). 200k is a GREAT income in much of the country ... but get to certain places and that only gives you a LOWER middle class income. (remember NY City cops, say a detective withOUT overtime, who lives WAY out where it is cheaper, not in Manhattan, has a BASE income of about $120k per year - before overtime and bennies. Add in overtime and their pay jumps to the high 100's for many if not most. Then add in their retirement ... and they are doing exceptionally WELL compared to those of us in "fly over country") Have a wife who is a teacher with 20 years experience and a Master's degree, just a classroom working teacher, and the combined cop/teacher family income (in NYC) is going to be north of $300k per year. Anonymous Coward User ID: 77299448 ![]() 01/24/2019 04:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, if you live in states with a income tax then you will pay close to $100,000 of that in tax. Married with children in school? Private school because you local school district is shit? $30,000 Property taxes on your house $15,000 Let’s see now we are down to $155,000 and you still have to pay your mortgage, buy groceries, and put some money into a savings account so you don’t have to work until your 80 just to eat and pay your property taxes. Oh, and maybe after you pay the sales taxes on all your purchases, you’ll have enough money left over to take a once a year family vacation. If you run a retirement calculator, you would see that it’s almost impossible to invest enough with $300,000 in income to retire until you are 70 and that’s IF you continue to make $300,000 a year until you are well into your 50’s. Good luck. |

Envy is a mortal sin. This is true. Envy societies produce nothing but poverty. In these societies, no one can get ahead without everyone grabbing them and dragging them down. I've seen this especially in Sub-Saharan African nations where I used to work. Everyone is required by their peers to live at a subsistence level there (unless they're in government, then it's ok). Anyone who tries to get ahead is subjected to murderous hatred, plots to steal from them, even kill them. Then as soon as something goes wrong, like a drought, they've got no surplus to see them through it. Their own envy ends up killing them every single time. |
