I had monitored the dynamic stability tests on the Challenger at Rockwell International. I had done some other control systems work as well on the shuttles and I felt part of a great effort in space. I was so sickened I didn't go to work that day. I called in sick. Tragic for those 7 astronauts aboard. They are amazing people and a huge loss for society at large. |

Challenger was lost on January 28, 1986, a structural failure during its ascent phase 73 seconds after launch from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex pad 39B, killed all seven crew members, Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Michael J. Smith, Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka, Judith A. Resnik and Ronald E.
