Facebook paid teens $20 a month to access their browsing history and DMs
The social network has been paying teens and adults to install a "Facebook Research" app.

It's being shut down for iOS users.

Since 2016???????

Some Facebook users have been giving the social network access to their phone activity in exchange for money as part of a research project since 2016, according to a Tuesday report by TechCrunch.

Facebook, which critics say isn't doing enough to protect the privacy of its users, has been giving people between the ages of 13 and 35 a payment of $20 per month plus referral fees for their phone and web activity.

Facebook is able to access this data after users install a "Facebook Research" VPN app.

The company is able to view web searches, location information, private messages in social media apps, and other data, Guardian Mobile Firewall security specialist Will Strafach told TechCrunch.

The study's participants are even asked to screenshot a page showing what they ordered from Amazon, according to TechCrunch.

Facebook confirmed that it was running a research program to learn about people's phone usage.

"Like many companies, we invite people to participate in research that helps us identify things we can be doing better," a Facebook spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

"Since this research is aimed at helping Facebook understand how people use their mobile devices, we've provided extensive information about the type of data we collect and how they can participate.

We don't share this information with others and people can stop participating at any time."

A more stringent punishment would be to revoke Facebook’s permission to offer employee-only apps.

The situation could further chill relations between the tech giants. Apple’s Tim Cook has repeatedly criticized Facebook’s data collection practices.

Facebook disobeying iOS policies to slurp up more information could become a new talking point.

Point 2 - Thats a great point! Imagine nudes... i can show the person next to me what someone said, but you’re not allowed to spread nude pics around. And if electronically fb is seeing those messages and emails, they’re definitely breaking a law.

Most work emails have extremely privileged company info, you'll often see the disclaimer that email is for intended recipient only. I can think of countless stuff like that. Maybe dms through social media have a loophole.

Nothing wrong here. I have it on a burner phone and as a early user i get $30 a month +$10 more per person i can get to sign up. Free beer money. They make it very clear its facebook wants to see how you use your phone. So i put it on a phone I dont do anything but play games on and check my casual non work email.
