There is a volcano in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it is an asphalt volcano. What would you like to be discussed? Until it erupts and sends a tsunami of hot asphalt and Corexit rushing towards the coastlines, all we can do is sit back and say, yup, volcano.

As we posit the expansion of Earth, it is clear to see that very active constructive plate boundaries exist under continental crust on both sides of the Gulf of Mexico.

An asphalt volcano is a rare type of submarine volcano (seamount) first discovered in 2003. Several examples have been found: first, along the coasts of the United States and Mexico, and then in other regions of the world; a few are still active.[1] Resembling seamounts in structure, they are made entirely of asphalt, and form when natural oil seeps up from the Earth's crust underwater.

This map also explains why there is no subduction. A large constructive plate boundary is what lies under California.

I've heard there is a huge methane bubble at the bottom of the gulf just waiting to go off...

I'm pretty sure that's methane bubbles are the reason for dead birds falling from the sky.
