Temperatures in parts of the Northern Plains and Great Lakes plunged to as low minus 42 Fahrenheit (minus 41 Celsius) in Park Rapids, Minnesota, and minus 31F in Fargo, North Dakota, according to the National Weather Service.

Andrew Orrison, a meteorologist with the service, said the some of the coldest wind chills were recorded in International Falls, Minnesota, at minus 55F (minus 48C). That's significantly more frigid than an expected low of minus 28F (-33C) with wind chill in Antarctica.

The deadly polar vortex wreaking havoc across the United States has left at least 12 people dead, including a college student who was found in the freezing cold outside an academic building on the campus of the University of Iowa. Authorities said the body of Gerald Belz (top) was found behind an academic hall just before 3am on Wednesday by campus police. The 18-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. While officials believe his death was related to dangerously low temperatures at the time he was found, officials have not given a specific cause of death. The National Weather Service says the wind chill around 3am was negative 51 degrees. The polar vortex in the Midwest has brought record-breaking low temperatures across the Midwest, halted postal services in five states and canceled more than 2,600 flights.

There was a winter like this in the 1800's. Laura Ingalls wilder wrote about it. At one point, Pa found a penguin when he went out to do the chores, that had been blown in on the storm.

They were living in a shanty (no insulation) ran out of firewood and had to twist hay to keep a fire going 24/7 for several days. They had to huddle up by the fire to sleep.

The snowdrifts piled up on the railroad track
up to 20 feet keeping trains from running so food supplies ran low.

There was a winter like this in the 1990's. I believe it was 1992. The wind chill was to get to -40 in the midwest. It was the only time I ever used the block heater on my car. Friggin miserable. I feel for you all experiencing this right now.

Wish I could find the video, on Twitter last night some guy was showing video of steam from his bathroom shower leaving the bathroom and going near his front door and instantly freezing like icicles around the entire drafty door frame. Was surreal, makes sense why all these wooly mammoths we find we’re flash frozen with food still in their mouths and stomach, shit must of hit hard and fast like this and just never let up

Vortex was the word used in the title of the article. It is a polar vortex, cold air dropping down from the poles into the midwest.

It (the Artic Zone collapse) is, without question, and with plenty of docummentation caused by CHEM-TRAILs ... it is a NATURAL response by the earth to the excess of toxic chemicals in our atmosphere

you all didn't have fuck-all to say, when it happened in the west a few years back - and you didn't believe us, when we told you the Earth had tilted ... NOAA finally admitted it after three years of mild winters convinced them that it wasn't just a wobble --- NOW, the mid-west and East are getting the effects of the crashed zone

Cold weather happens every year, we survive.

It did, we had a mini ice age in the 1700s the Great Lakes froze over, the river Thames froze solid lots of pilgrams died. People who live in Canada’s tundra or northern Sweden/Norway/Finland/Russia deal with this EVERY winter

vortex is just the hip catchy term of the day... just a high pressure system...then again, a low pressure system is a "vortex" too...rotating the other direction...

We had -15 actual air temp twice in the last 10 days at our house.

Wind chill has been in the -30 to -40 range.

When a phenomenon like this cold blast comes up, they will say that it's only "weather", not "climate change" But when a hurricane hits a populated area and causes damage, they will say that it is proof of "man made climate change".
