I don't think the average American has any idea how much their government browbeats the rest of the world: telling everyone else how their banking must be done (even though most money laundering is done through banks in New York and London), forcing biometric passports on everyone in the world, meddling in foreign elections, etc.

If you're an American:

Are you aware that your government is requiring other nations to spy on you when you're overseas? Are you aware that if you establish residency in a foreign nation that that nation is required to report your presence there to the local U.S. embassy without telling you? NO other country requires this, only America. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The U.S. government is also pushing policies that require American citizens living abroad to be forced to visit the local U.S. consulate or embassy. e.g. you used to be able to go to a foreign DMV, show them the drivers license you got from your state in the U.S., and get a local drivers license issued to you, no problems, no questions asked. But now, if you try to do that, you'll be told you have to go to the U.S. consulate or embassy to get authentification of your U.S. drivers license for the foreign DMV. (Only Americans are made to do this, because this is not really a requirement by the foreign DMV, it's actually the American government's requirement being forced upon foreign DMVs solely in the case of American citizens.)

Your government is hell bent on knowing where you are and what you're doing wherever you may be in the world. They comb through foreign legal announcements on the lookout for Americans who legally change their names abroad. They resort to threats, bribes, and espionage to find out which corporations and bank accounts Americans own offshore.

Just ask any American expat about all the new rules that keep sending them to their U.S. embassy for various "authentications" lately. Just ask any foreigner who works in their country's immigration department about the new rules concerning reporting on Americans to the U.S. embassy.

The U.S. government wants to make sure that its citizens cannot escape even if they manage to make it to the other side of the world.
