That pop sounded local. The engine was functional and wound up as tight as a two dollar watch all the way to impact. When he popped out of the bottom of the clouds a few seconds before impact, he undoubtedly hoisted back on the yoke. Could have easily pulled the tail off. That would explain airplane parts outside of the splatter zone.
