The majority of US nuclear power plants are able to remove the nuclear rods from the pile by using mechanical means. The pile can be deactivated. It quickly cools to slightly above room temperature. The problem stems through evaporation of water in the pool. Once the water evaporates, then you get radiation that is contained by the dome and structure. If the structure and dome is damaged, then the radiation can leak out. This radiation is limited in range and scope by wind. It is not as deadly as Fukushima because, they couldn't deactivate the pile. Plus Fuku had structural damage that allowed radiation to leak out into the air and water... Remember all the Fukushima workers that froze or ran, and did not do their jobs which would have greatly mitigate the event? Remember them? Yes, but IMO; they could not have stopped the reaction. They could not SCRAM the reactor and therefore it went China Syndrome. The pumps failed, the containment field cracked and radiation was leaking everywhere. They ran for their lives... i beg to differ.... if the water rescinds or evaporates.. it IS doom... the casing jackets MUST remain in water, because?, if exposed to air, they ignite..... I don't know if they would ignite, but hydrogen gas will be produced. This irradiated hydrogen gas and steam will exert pressure within the containment area. Damage of the containment area occurs when the rods start to melt and burn through the floor of the containment area. At this point, there could be a release of radioactive hydrogen gas and steam into the atmosphere... [link to interestingengineering.com (secure)] |
