Yes, he is. Unfortunately, he is still rambling incoherently and not making any sense as of today and can't even be interviewed about the incident. He's been charged with attempted 1st degree murder, aggravated assault and battery with intent to cause grave bodily harm, criminal threat, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Apparently he was using heroin and no one even knew about it.

Sounds like a severe brain injury triggered by drug use. Meaning he probably has a brain injury from time in service? Was he blown up or did he lose consciousness while serving? Do you know?

Some of the malarial drugs made soldiers lose their minds in fits of violence.
There is not excuse for what he did - but there might be an explanation.
Was he mixing psych drugs with street drugs?

What an awful mess.
Your daughter I really feel for her.
Are you close, are you able to offer her emotional support?

I have to think if you could contact the right service organization - its possible they might help your daughter as a victim of a severely mentally injured Veteran of recent conflict. I wish I knew ~ I'll google around and see if I can find something.
These organizations that help Veterans - I would think one of them would also step up to help your daughter its just finding the right agency . . .

I know that he received disability from the military for his PTSD but am not aware of his suffering any injuries. I know that he had killed while there and that it had weighed heavily on him. Recently he had begun to hallucinate seeing the dead and saying they were talking to him, but my daughter did not feel threatened by it or him. I only found out about the hallucinations after the fact when she was speaking with the detectives. He was not on meds and to the best of our knowledge he was not prescribed them, but who really knows if he was and just threw the script away.

Do you know if the disability was from his branch of service or from the Department of Veterans affairs? What branch of service was he in?
Did he keep in contact with anyone?

Because of the nature of service in these recent conflicts - many Veterans are suffering in addition to PTSD - brain injuries. In all honesty if he is still babbling in jail I hope they consider medical possibilities and look at his brain.

I would think it might help your daughter in her healing if she knew if something like this was in play. Is she in shock?

Its important she get support right away. She is going to need a lot of emotional support.

I'm not sure where the disability came from, but I know he followed up with the VA, so maybe from them. He was infantry in the Army. I'm not sure about whether he kept contact with anyone or not. I personally know so little about his time in Afghanistan because I didn't want to press him. I do know that fireworks really triggered his PTSD badly.

She's not in shock, but she is in so much pain that she doesn't want to address the psychological aspect as yet because she doesn't think she can handle the physical pain that would be caused by becoming emotional and crying. Someone is with her at all times, whether it is me or her father. She knows that she needs to get therapy eventually to deal with this. The whole extended family is just trying to do our best to be there and support her.
