The booms we hear in Oklahoma aren't from the sky, but from underground. With some of them the ground shakes. They have been called "Seneca Guns" for centuries.

I live in an area where there are a lot of cave systems (Ozarks). I often wonder if the sound is related to caves collapsing deep underground. Not likely in LA though.

It has a cadence so it is likely artificial. It almost sounds like pilings being driven....but I can't tell the magnitude of the sound.

That is nothing like the distant BOOMS I have heard in my area in the past. Mine sound more like thunder or distant explosions.

Sounded like it was under water to me. My first thought was some sort of mechanical type pounding going on.

I posted this at another site, it is a valid explanation.

The crust under out feet is brittle down to the level where the Grand Banks Shelf is. The expanding rifts push magma under the crust and that cause a bulge which means the brittle part breaks and the vibrations treat the surface like the skin on a drum and that creates the sounds. It may also get reflected back by clouds. Where the land is above descending magma the crust dips and any existing voids would collapse which also creates vibrations.

MYSTERY booming sounds have been shaking houses and terrifying residents after "flashes of light" were spotted across America.

Experts have been left baffled by a spate of seismic booms from Arizona to New York that appear to have gathered pace over the past week.

This is New Orleans; we ARE a body of water.
It does sound like pile driving, but I hear these sounds at various times during the night.
