The booms we hear in Oklahoma aren't from the sky, but from underground. With some of them the ground shakes. They have been called "Seneca Guns" for centuries. [link to islandlifenc.com (secure)] I live in an area where there are a lot of cave systems (Ozarks). I often wonder if the sound is related to caves collapsing deep underground. Not likely in LA though. |

Mine sound more like thunder or distant explosions. Was that one boom played over and over in the clip or a series of booms? Sounded like it was under water to me. My first thought was some sort of mechanical type pounding going on. |

Wayfaring Stranger User ID: 76285781 Canada 02/07/2019 08:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I posted this at another site, it is a valid explanation. The crust under out feet is brittle down to the level where the Grand Banks Shelf is. The expanding rifts push magma under the crust and that cause a bulge which means the brittle part breaks and the vibrations treat the surface like the skin on a drum and that creates the sounds. It may also get reflected back by clouds. Where the land is above descending magma the crust dips and any existing voids would collapse which also creates vibrations. |
