One only needs to refer to the DELUGE of positive comments by Millennials on ANY youtube video of any rock, pop, r&b, etcetera song of that generation. Overwhelmingly, even 8 to 15 year-olds are commenting that they prefer older music from the 70's & 80's to the garbage (mostly, not all) music of today.

Listening to Don Mclean or Billy Joel makes me happy. Listening to Bieber makes me want to shoot myself. Been born in the early-mid 90's I don't mind late 90's or early 00's music either. It's a nostalgia thing. Happy memories at the skate station for example.

It's the opposite. The "tribe" were disproportionately responsible for the music of yesteryear that people miss & yearn for today. Even Elvis Presley's first hit songs were written by Jews. "Tin Pan Alley" and Madison Avenue songwriters/music composers were disproportionately of the tribe. You should do some research first instead of $pewing your regular, vomitous hatred on here.

As a musician I can tell you 100% that modern music isn't worth learning. It's generic musically and brain dead lyric wise. A song would have to have the music undeniable sick musicianship ever to motivate anyone to learn the song with modern lyrics over it.

If music represents society then society has degraded alarmingly.

I can vouch for young kids learning the old tunes. Queen riffs. Hendrix. Nirvana. Music pretty much ends at John Mayer as far as modern music goes. John Mayer is one of best all time btw.

Can't think of a single musician beyond that.

Yes.

Maybe in the sense that it holds some sort of subliminal cultural significance that is associated in the mind of the millennial. But I think that the same could be true in the next 50 years when they look back on the "golden years of the late 90s or 2000s the children of millennial will remember their music as something special that transcends their own music. As far as them "preferring" that music to mainstream pop, the numbers speak for themselves. if they really did prefer older music there would be many many other bands like Greta Van Fleet that are old style revival bands and the charts would not be topped by Drake, kanye, ect ect

Thank you for sharing that link. I just shared it on my FB for my streaming (100% legal) station that, as just last year I uploaded nearly 100 hits from each year from 1950 to 2002 ... just haven't had time to make a proper "show" from them yet.

Maybe I'll get some new listeners (I'm NOT fishing for them here - probably against the rules anyways, just expressing appreciation in detail)

Yeah well you can blame this on blood sucking leaches at the record companies that keep 90% of the profits. No decent musicians are going to sign up for that imo.

It's not just nostalgia, although I'm sure that's a big part of it. The music from the 60s to 90s was objectively better music. It's not all the fault of these modern musicians, though. Yeah, they suck, but the rock 'n' roll genre has been pretty much played out and anything that gets made now is always going to be derivative trash. Pop music, too. There's really nothing that a 25-year-old musician can write that hasn't been done already, and nobody is ever going to match Strawberry Fields, Stairway to Heaven, Purple Haze, or Smells Like Teen Spirit because, well, they've already been written.

I can attest to that.

Well duh I didn't need a study to confirm that. What person in their right mind would like most of the crap being produced today. Oh sure you will get some young people who will listen to it initially because they don't know any better but soon will discover the older and better stuff and people like Cardi B, JayZ and Lady Gaga will be dropped like a hot potato.

Same way we "Latter-Boomers" (I've coined it) are lumped together with "Baby Boomers."

Latter Boomers (1960-1965) are in their mid to late 50's now; Baby Boomers started after WWII, some of whom are in their 70's now. Even they (Baby Boomers) wouldn't want to be associated with their parents' generation, born in the 1920's.

Everyone prefers that music because it was better. Since 2k, all creative art has pretty much sucked as society has transformed to a tyranny.

I May Be 50, but Don’t Call Me a Boomer

There is no baby boom generation.

Oh, sure, there was a baby boom: a neatly defined, pig-in-the-python bulge from 1946 to 1964. But the kind of broadly shared cultural experiences that could bind together people across that whole span? That just didn’t happen.

This year the youngest of the baby boomers — the youngest, mind you — turn 50. I hit that milestone a few months back. But we aren’t what people usually have in mind when they talk about boomers. They mean the early boomers, the postwar cohort, most of them now in their 60s —not us later boomers, labeled “Generation Jones” by the writer Jonathan Pontell.

The boom generation really has two distinct halves, which in my mind I call Boomer Classic and Boomer Reboot. (Take this quiz to see where you stand.) The differences between them have to do, not surprisingly, with sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll — and economics and war. For a wide-ranging set of attitudes and cultural references, it matters whether you were a child in the 1940s and ′50s, or in the 1960s and ′70s. And it probably matters even more whether you reached adulthood before or after the early ‘70s, a time of head-spinning changes with long-term consequences for families, careers and even survival.

The end of the war in Vietnam makes for one especially sharp dividing line: In 1973, the cease-fire was signed, United States forces withdrew, and the last American draftees were inducted.

If you were an early boomer, even if you were not drafted or shipped to Vietnam, you had friends, classmates or relatives who were. The fathers you knew had served in World War II, and probably thought their sons should answer the call, too. The war was a raw, central presence in young people’s lives, and in the nation’s cultural and political battles.

Late boomers like me had none of that — no war, no draft, no defining political cause, and most of our fathers were too young for World War II. I remember, as a teenager, seeing old footage of the riots outside the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, and thinking, “People my age don’t feel that strongly about anything.”

People raised in the immediate postwar years had more faith in their government, and an idealistic view of America that curdled in the ′60s and ′70s. My childhood memories of the evening news, on the other hand, include the war, protests, Watergate and the dour faces of Johnson and Nixon, not the grins of Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy.

In this way, I think we late boomers have more in common with the jaded Generation X that followed: we had less idealism to spoil. No, I don’t remember where I was when Kennedy was killed and innocence died (I was an infant), but I sure remember where I was when Nixon resigned and cynicism reigned. Older boomers may have wanted to change the world; most of my peers just wanted to change the channel.

Another line between the eras runs through the bedroom. It’s not that premarital sex, casual sex and even anonymous sex, were unknown in earlier times. But when early boomers were teenagers in the back seats of their cars, it was understood that sex was dangerous.

Then came the birth control pill (first marketed in 1961, but because of various state laws, not universally accessible until 1972) and legal abortion (Roe v. Wade was in 1973). They helped create a window of time, 10 to 15 years, when, for the first time, people could convince themselves (and many did) that there could be sex without consequences.
