It is sadly spot on. We've built our own walls and thanks to PC culture we're our own prison guards. Instead of self-regulation we've relinquished this to others, bowing to their opinion and ever fearful we cross some arbitrary line that sends us to the "Cooler" (aka banned from Twitter/Facebook/etc).

The only part I have to question is if it's set up like this by a "totalitarian regime" or if it's just been nudged along and it's mostly the semi-natural development given technology over time. Even in 1981 the computer, cell phone, and social interaction structure were vastly different than what we have today.

I wonder if this has outpaced man's ability to socially adapt to change, and that's part of why we've seen such a wide schism form in society today.
