I don't know. Gangsta rap has been going strong since the mid-1980s. We're talking about a genre that has had no break for somewhere around 35 years. It's unheard of in pop music.

Current rap is terrible, although some underground acts do speak truth and utilize jazz in their composition.

This though - please listen to if you care about messages. This guy speaks the truth and challenges what rap was becoming. This is from back in the late 90’s or early 2000’s, but this man could talk real issues and his production is pure jazz and soul.

This album is probably the best first album by a group I’ve listened to.

Just relistened to the whole thing last Sunday while doing yard work and on some fungus.
