If this was going to be pointed up at the sky we would be winding up declaring war on another alien species in our own star system the the end of the month most likely. I thout 7 petawatts was how many peta members it took to screw in a lightbulb.

But that is an advantage, not a disadvantage. The shorter the period the higher the energy per volume you can achieve. With high enough energy densities, the targets you hit might start transmuting into other materials, fusing together which produces energy just like it is the case for our sun.

That might not be a great way to produce energy, given the efficiency of the lasers as in how much energy you have to put into the pulse vs how much you get out but it certainly helps with amplifying the pulse's energy and completely vaporizing your target.
