Re: You owe the person who hired you, loyalty.
it's always a pyramid and unless you put yourself on the top you are always making whoever hired you twice what they are paying you.

you owe noone anything except yourself.
A job is not a gift. It's work.

Just like checking out your groceries yourself at the self checkout is not you being self sufficient, it's you working to pay for goods.

Man has common sense completely gone out the window?

Re: You owe the person who hired you, loyalty.
I've been self employed for over 40 years.

I have observed a radical change in the mindset of employees. 80% of them have a chip on their shoulder. An 'I deserve' mentality.

Anyone that gets ahead in this life knows that you if you can't follow, you can't lead. A guy starting out pushing a shovel, that works his ass off and is LOYAL, (see definition above), soon gets promoted to running equipment. Then promoted to management. Then, he may go on to running his own company or he can save his beans and retire early.

whatever your experience is, it doesn't involve being an effective manager of people.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76869839

Listen, things aren't like how they were in the past. You are describing the old era of employers (prior to 1980's)

If you think a person who works their ass off and is "loyal" will soon get promoted is a fantasy. That is not how the real world works. Especially not in today's society.

I've known tons of people like you've described. Did they ever get promoted? Nope. You know why? Because the employers used that loyalty and hard work to their advantage, because they knew they could get away with it.

How many loyal and hard working employees have been fucked over hard when the company vaporizes their 401k's. People who have put in 20, 30, 40 years of their life into the company only to be royally fucked to the extreme.

And lets be honest, we all know of people who didn't work hard at all and got handed everything on a sliver platter only because of connections or familial relations. And let's not forget the ass-kissers who dont really work hard at all but get promoted and awarded.

Re: You owe the person who hired you, loyalty.
I ordered pizza twice last year from the pizza place I worked at, while at university..

It was considered one of the 2 best pizza places in town and even had a pub and laundromat attached, which was excellent for a college student.

A large pizza with minimal toppings is now about $30 delivered and was absolute garbage both times, compared to what it use to be.

Barely edible and the signature sauce wrapped crust was blown out and dry.

I don't have to guess why..

I look at it the same way. You took the job so don't think you're entitled to run the fucking place. Your job is what you were hired to do and that's make the company money. If you can't do that you're out the fucking door. If you buck while going you'll be escorted out psychically.

Re: You owe the person who hired you, loyalty.
You do not owe an employer or your direct boss loyalty. 2008 taught a lot of people that their employers give no respect nor feel any loyalty towards their employees. Other companies have screwed long-term employees out of pensions. Companies do whatever they have to do to make a profit, and employees are expendable. Even if you aren't the one laid off you end up doing the work for 2, putting in 60 hour weeks if you are a salaried employee. They cut hourly work weeks just low enough they don't have to pay benefits. Many don't even pay living wages to their employees.

Employees only OWE their employers what they sign in their contracts. That means you come in on time, you don't abuse sick leave, you don't steal, you respect privacy, and you do whatever else you agreed upon. Never, ever think your employer is going to take care of you - they won't. You are on your own and your first responsibility is towards yourself and your family. All employees are expendable, and so are companies when you get a better offer.

You may get moved to other bosses, but ultimately, who ever is your direct manager or direct report has hired you or accepted you as part of their team. If there is weirdness there or his policy is not to your liking then YOU should move on if you cannot work it out.

This person accepted you to their team, they have put their own success partially, maybe wholeheartedly in your hands.

They owe you nothing, they could chose thousands of other people, yet they chose or choose you every day.

Ultimately you should mold your own work ethics, style and performance to their expectation. You two are a team, like it or not. He/she will take the pain and sometimes the heat from your failure or NOT. The not times come when you have disrupted the trust.

This is how you move ahead. Make your boss believe you are essential to their success and get THEM promoted. They will almost always bring you along. They were likely there where you are at some point, and they likely have a boss too. Help your boss make his boss happy.

you are wrong. I have gotten burned by every ring banger I have ever worked for. "promotion of the self through the destruction of others". they bring their religion to work and translate it to their commerce. I am 33 years old. I could have already retired had I been paid what I'm owed. Fuck your insolent ignorant advice that will surely lead to the majority of bright intelligent individuals self destruction. Your advice requires the employee to operate on faith. Not faith in god. faith in the individual. a form of useless idolotry.

I have 3 LLCs now that I am operating in secret while working a full time job and I will have my vengeance by operating in the real free market. Theft is not the free market. Your advice is not the free market. Your advice is submission to slavery. "the strength of the word of the bond makes the man for he who hath no salt, has nothing, is nothing". Put faith in honor and integrity in the form of idolotry for another human being. Folks do not follow this advice. Focus on your family and the yourself, not another human being outside of your circle. If their rewards happen to benefit you, than you can continue to generate them until it runs out. period.

I agree with your sentiments if this was a perfect world and all bosses were ethical and professional however in my 30 years of working I can certainly attest that this is not the case.

There are bosses that are narcissists, bullies, tight arses and it is only over time that you discover this. I am an extremely loyal person and I can not tell you how many times I have been treated like shit by bad bosses.

So I am in agreement with one of the other posters in that your first loyalty is always to yourself. If your boss shows you kindness, respect and pays you properly then by all means be loyal. If they don't, get outta there sooner rather than later.

I think, in all reality, we are seeing two sides to the same coin here. I find all of your points valid and I would expect that you see the same of mine.

We all tend to go off of our own personal perspective and we incorrectly expect others to see the same picture. You and I are now making that 'mistake'.

So, to clarify:

You are correct. Old school companies did promote the hardest workers. New school abuses them. BUT, due to the fact that I think 'old school', I personally promote the best and brightest and pay them accordingly.

I see business as a co-op. New school sees business as to capitalize on their labor for profit.

One big weakness I see today in good employees is that they won't communicate what's on their minds. If they think that they deserve more they need to ask for it rather than carry a chip on their shoulder. In other words, you are correct that today's businesses (80%) will abuse their employees AS FAR AS THE EMPLOYEE PERMITS IT TO HAPPEN.

If a high performer isn't being paid enough or treated fairly in one of these 'new school' businesses, they simply need to COMMUNICATE . Their boss is already completely aware of the employees abilities and work ethic and the employee will likely get the raise he is asking for.

or...unfortunately, in the corporate world his boss may see the employee as a future threat and tell him to like it or leave.

yah, it's all fkd up. I can't argue what you've said except it isn't quite as dark as you've painted. I'll go to the 80/20 rule on this and say 80% of companies will abuse employees as far as they can get away with it. Call me an optimist, but I am bias because I treat employees like I would want to be treated.
