It was considered one of the 2 best pizza places in town and even had a pub and laundromat attached, which was excellent for a college student. Other companies have screwed long-term employees out of pensions. Companies do whatever they have to do to make a profit, and employees are expendable. Even if you aren't the one laid off you end up doing the work for 2, putting in 60 hour weeks if you are a salaried employee. They cut hourly work weeks just low enough they don't have to pay benefits. Many don't even pay living wages to their employees. Employees only OWE their employers what they sign in their contracts. That means you come in on time, you don't abuse sick leave, you don't steal, you respect privacy, and you do whatever else you agreed upon. Never, ever think your employer is going to take care of you - they won't. You are on your own and your first responsibility is towards yourself and your family. All employees are expendable, and so are companies when you get a better offer. |

I agree with your sentiments if this was a perfect world and all bosses were ethical and professional however in my 30 years of working I can certainly attest that this is not the case. There are bosses that are narcissists, bullies, tight arses and it is only over time that you discover this. I am an extremely loyal person and I can not tell you how many times I have been treated like shit by bad bosses. So I am in agreement with one of the other posters in that your first loyalty is always to yourself. If your boss shows you kindness, respect and pays you properly then by all means be loyal. If they don't, get outta there sooner rather than later. |

I find all of your points valid and I would expect that you see the same of mine. We all tend to go off of our own personal perspective and we incorrectly expect others to see the same picture. You and I are now making that 'mistake'. So, to clarify: You are correct. Old school companies did promote the hardest workers. New school abuses them. BUT, due to the fact that I think 'old school', I personally promote the best and brightest and pay them accordingly. I see business as a co-op. New school sees business as to capitalize on their labor for profit. One big weakness I see today in good employees is that they won't communicate what's on their minds. If they think that they deserve more they need to ask for it rather than carry a chip on their shoulder. In other words, you are correct that today's businesses (80%) will abuse their employees AS FAR AS THE EMPLOYEE PERMITS IT TO HAPPEN. If a high performer isn't being paid enough or treated fairly in one of these 'new school' businesses, they simply need to COMMUNICATE . Their boss is already completely aware of the employees abilities and work ethic and the employee will likely get the raise he is asking for. or...unfortunately, in the corporate world his boss may see the employee as a future threat and tell him to like it or leave. yah, it's all fkd up. I can't argue what you've said except it isn't quite as dark as you've painted. I'll go to the 80/20 rule on this and say 80% of companies will abuse employees as far as they can get away with it. Call me an optimist, but I am bias because I treat employees like I would want to be treated. |
