In this history of rock n roll, who do you most wish wouldn't have died?

I seem to listen more to the early eighties all the way to the last years . I never saw them till 94 , so I like what brings those memories back. My first show was jgb , a friend from high school drug me there at the cap center . I did not even know who they were. I left that night a different person ! It got too intense at the end of the shows knockin, and I ran out thinking I died .
But I love the seventies too. 60s is my least favorites beside the wonderful doing that rag and mountains .
Like the side stuff acoustic , solo .

What does it say about the young man, that he died at age 32, and yet is 50 years later singled out among the greatest of the greats.... the only drummer mentioned so far.

Bonham was by far the best pure feel drummer (for the power) of his generation, and absolutely deserves to be considered.

Unlike others who died too young, I really feel like Tom had no ceiling.

I truly believe he would have written another 500 songs, if he lived longer, and so yes, I burn with his loss.

Compare to, say...Jerry Garcia, whom I love.

By the end, his knuckles were swollen, his voice was shot from years of freebase and Pall Mall non-filters, etc.

He even said about writing songs, that he'd "rather fill in all the O's in the phonebook". Sure, he still had probably a few good years.

But Tom Petty? Ten more albums, guaranteed. In the fucking bank.

And it's all gone. We'll never hear them.

Yes, the King, of course. His mind and body were in bad shape, but nothing irreversable. And his voice? My GOD!!

Even his last, final sessions, he is in fucking credible, and telling jokes (from the outtakes, Elvis starts a song and his dog barks... next take, the phone rings... Elvis says,

"Shoot the phone off the wall! Shoot the dog, too!")

and being a total bad ass. This was just before he died.

So, yes, I totally agree. Elvis had a lot of life left in him, and he would have changed the course of the 80s and 90s for sure, even as an "oldies" act, I know he would have re-invented himself somehow.

He also played a mean acoustic guitar, and I can absolutely picture Elvis having done an MTV Unplugged intended to be ironic, but ending up being mindblowing.

He could have made old school blues records, more spoken word, DEFINITELY could have transitioned into hard rock, or even metal, for sure. Woah.....

Also, may as well have done all that, in addition to maintaining The Doors, which, holy fuck, that is something that I don't even try to imagine, because all that lost potential is exactly the impetus behind this tread....

For me, I'd have to say Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy. He was so underrated and Thin Lizzy had a lot of awesome songs other than the two hits you hear on the radio.
