Knievel Esq. For me, I'd have to say Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy. He was so underrated and Thin Lizzy had a lot of awesome songs other than the two hits you hear on the radio. Phil Lynott......one thousand percent He was like a totally exposed filament, burned so brightly that there was no way it could last... But if he had sobered up-- a bit more, I mean--- yes, I totally see him reinvigorating the stagnant 80s and early 90s scene, because Phil was really, really special... he could have done anything. He could have worked with early rap artists, for example. Also, another 6 or 7 Thin Lizzy albums wouldn't have been too much to ask. I think he would have done a lot, had he lived longer. Great call, bud. ~Wharf Rat |

I can't find it at the moment, I had never heard it before, it was about war and it was totally 80s and a bit "80s cheesy", I don't know how else to describe it lol. But Phil made it cool, his voice is one of a kind and stands out. COVID IS NOT FUCKING REAL, WW3 AIN'T GUNNA HAPPEN. TURN OFF YOUR MOTHERFUCKING TV. Wharf Rat (OP) User ID: 76902183 United States 02/09/2019 07:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think of him every time I hear Hendrix's (version of) "All Along the Watchtower" Brian Jones came in to play bass----- then piano---- and winded up simply playing a 'Vibrothwack' on the intro, because he was too drunk to play in key, on piano, or bass. But he's there, on the official Hendrix version, in the beginning... VERY beginning...right after Du-du DO-DO-DO-DO *thwack!!* du-du dudududu... that's Brian Jones! And yes, he did also found the Stones, and was largely and unfairly written off, despite his crucial role. ~Wharf Rat |

I think about this a lot. And out of everybody, from Jimi to John Lennon, and too many mention in between... for me, honestly? Hank Williams. I think he would have really gotten pissed off at crappy 50's/60's pop, and would have single-handedly invented some form of rock and roll we can only imagine.... Except I *try* to imagine, but I can't hear it. So I keep thinking about it. My second choice, would actually be Hendrix, because he was SO DAMN GOOD he would definitely have played with everybody in the 70s and 80s (and 90s) had he lived, and I am 1000% sure he would have left his mark on metal, punk, 70s soul, country, prolly would have made a great record with Bob Marley.... oh yeah, can't you see it? Can't you smell it? It would have to be Jerry . There was nothing that could compare ever! And I’ve seen tons of bands from metal to shitty Cyprus hill. Pink Floyd was even a let down compared to what jgb and dead and reconstruction and the rest of it put out. jerry based his whole repetoire on this one song by the elevators (stacy sutherland was the guitarist) the elevators stole the show at the avalon quick silver grace slick etc. opened for the elevators janis got her scream from the elevators lead singer roky erikson [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] |

I agree, Karen Carpenter. Even though as a prog rock fan, I think KC had the best female voice I ever heard. Check out the YT on The Carpenters doing a cover of "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles. This was recorded at Lake Tahoe the year before their first album was released. I think she as only 18 at the time. Squonk was the first “real” Song I learned to play on guitar. |

FissionSurplus User ID: 76791906 United States 02/09/2019 08:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | He was the inspiration for just about all of the early 60s bands, particularly the "British Invasion" bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, because he was super popular there. Many artists in the US as well picked up on his singing. He was the first rock and roll artist to use orchestral instruments in his music, he dubbed over his own songs to layer them with depth, and he was experimental with sounds and beats. Listen to the following beat on "Peggy Sue". This became the surfer beat in the mid 60s. Now listen to his copycat Tommy Roe (whom I do like), complete with the same beat and even the skip in the voice. The classic song "American Pie" was about Buddy's death, the day the music died. Well, it didn't die, but it got a hell of a push from Buddy. Tribute long after: |

Here's a mashup I made of Phil with Tom Petty.... Not perfect, but worth a chuckle Haha! I like Krusty at the beginning! I wanted to post last night but I fell asleep about your perspective on Old Hank. I could actually really see that happening with Hank and Rock and Roll. I just saw Hank Jr. last July, he opened for Skynyrd, and he told a story about when he was really young, when his dad was still alive. More or less, Old Hank was always hanging out with and always having over some of the original Rock and Roll guys over to their house, guys like the Big Bopper and Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. and Hank Jr. was always around, always watching, fetching beer and drinks for his dad and his friends while they sat around and played music and had a good time. Well one day apparently Miss Audrey caught Hank Jr. dancing and carrying on and singing, so she grabbed him by the arm and drug him in to the living room to Old Hank and his friends and proceeded to ask them "where he learned this behavior" and scold them for showing Hank Jr. how to act like them. We wouldn't have bands like Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, etc. without him. I couldn't imagine what he would have done WITH them. COVID IS NOT FUCKING REAL, WW3 AIN'T GUNNA HAPPEN.
