I'm retired and haven't gotten a refund in 6 years. I'm also about $16 over the limit to qualify for any homestead refunds from my state. I manage to get by quite well on $1685/month and I don't whine about it... I rather enjoy the monthly challenge. Keeps me sharp enough to slaughter any AC that may foolishly cross may path.

I'm also a grassroots Trump supporter so you can take those comments and shove them firmly up your first available orifice. Sideways.

The "system" has never been fair or balanced since the days of FDR's New Deal -at least back then recipients WORKED for what the fed gave them- and therin lies the problem: if these people have never worked a day in their lives, then they cannot pay into the system that supports them. Further, starting with their first "big" paycheck, the under-employed frequently squander what they earn on needless luxuries - greed that soon sees them financially spiraling out of control - they are the ones who positively RELY on those tax refunds just to pay off Christmas bills from two years earlier.

But the bigger problem are the fatcats who will hire accountants to ferret out every loophole so they can cling to the false sense of security a hefty Bank account brings. So they propose more laws to widen the gap between the haves and the have-nots which only exacerbates the problem.

If you are wealthy enough to owe that amount in taxes then you can hire someone to find you tax shelters, surely.

Personally I prefer CPAs over brokers who are just ordinary conmen.

If you held your investment for over a year the capital gains tax is much less.

We agree! I think all loopholes should be closed, all deductions removed and refunds abolished. We should all pay in equally.

If your refunds amount to that much, then you are financially unbalanced - ESPECIALLY if you rely on them every year just to break even. Instead of an annual refund check you'd be better off getting that money every couple of weeks in a paycheck and putting into an interest-bearing account.
