Nowatzki was onboard Hornet when she launched the Doolittle raid. He also survived the sinking of the Hornet. In the CBS interview, Nowatzki told Mark Phillips, “If you go down to my locker, there was $40 in it. You can have it.” Last Edited by Mollzyie on 02/13/2019 03:39 PM |

[link to twitter.com (secure)] "Hornet launched the Doolittle raid and fought at Midway. One of her groups was VT8, which attacked the Japanese fleet without fighters and got slaughtered with only survivor. However, their sacrifice meant the defending Zeros were still low when the dive bombers attacked. As a result, the dive bombers were able to absolutely crush the Japanese fleet, destroying three carriers and finishing Japan's ambitions in the Pacific. VT8 was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their courage. She was lost in the Battle of Santa Cruz, which Japan technically won but at a heavy cost extracted by her and Enterprise's fighters. Big E would avenge her at Guadalcanal, finishing Japan's attempt to retake it. A great ship. May she and her crew rest in peace." |

It's also 140 US soldiers' final resting place... its also a 77 year old previously unlocated piece of US history.. a cultured educated person sees it a bit sensational.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37676355 It's loss was a complete embarrassment to the USN. lol, wut? Read your history. The USN was so afraid if the IJN that they didn't risk towing the Hornet back to base. So two destroyer's tried to sink her with torpedo's and most either missed or failed to detonate. So they abandoned the Hornet and the Japanese captured her. The Japanese sent crews aboard but decided there was too much internal damage to resurect her as a carrier, so they sunk her.
