Guy who fought off and killed mountain lion speaks out | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77344644 United States 02/15/2019 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | He saw the lion from 10 feet away and yelled at it for a bit. That means he had time to deploy some pepper spray which would have been even better than getting into a knife fight with it. Animals can sense your fear or your readiness to defend. Even reaching for a pepper spray or knife will make an animal rethink attacking you. I climb the cutbanks on the river beside my house in warm weather, and I always carry a can of bear spray, a knife, and a horn in case I encounter bears at the top. We have mountain lions too, but it's usually bears that come into town. What if the bear is upwind? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 75516488 United States 02/15/2019 10:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ive said this little story before on GLP years ago. I was hiking on a very public trail close to where I live. National Park property. It is very close to homes, businesses, but still in the wild none the less. I run up on Nordic walking stick hippies in the woods and they were frozen in fear when I can marching along with a .45 on my chest holster and a large knife on my hip. I asked them whats the problem, they seemed too scared to ask. I knew instantly it was my weapons. I laughed and said kids do you know where you are? They weakly shrugged. I said "in the wild" don't ever forget it. "Ohhh and by the way that creek 3 feet from you has fresh bear and mountain lion tracks, just be aware" I kept on hiking, and at that moment every lesson my father ever told me about being prepared in Scouts, treating the woods a dangerous adventure, and respecting what mother nature can throw at you came together. End of story. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 43322661 Canada 02/15/2019 10:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I do not buy this guy’s story. A genuine fight with a border collie or labrador would produce more battle damage. Nope, its bullshit. He tried something stupid on maybe a sleeping animal or picked up a cub or something DUMB and got a few lovetaps. Maybe there was a lion but it was sick and weak and he fucked with it and only got a light beating. I dunno what the real story is, but a grown strong mountain lion of ANY size wouldve sliced and diced him up. |

Every state has their definition of mountain lion. But he did survive, so props to him. Mountain lion = cougar, puma. This one was an 80lb juvenile. He said he stepped on it's neck so that's what did. FFS, why would he lie about it? I read an article that said wildlife veterinarians autopsied the cat and said it did not have rabies and they estimated its live weight at 35-40 pounds. It's a bummer that this guy stumbled into a sick animal and got f'd up, but this story has gotten way overblown for some reason. I wonder if this beagle-sized cat told Travis he was running in MAGA country? |

DIRK User ID: 77152402 United States 02/15/2019 11:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I thought most national parks ban guns AM I CORRECT I JUST REMEMBER SEEING THE ITEMS BANNED LONG AGO WHEN I WENT TO HIKE THAT TRAIL OR TRAILS UP THERE NEAR HORSETOOTH ROCK I think the two young lions they caught were the dead ones siblings they may test to see about that so i am sure they saw prints from the larger lions if they are near by. I think when you get to many lions they tend to get all worked up and fight each other and maybe attack people and small animals. They love a large territory and don't like anyone crossing into it. That poor guy fought for his life and he held down the back legs as he feared they would rip his crotch and legs to shreds. He tells this all in the video. He also hit it glancing blows on the back of it's head a couple times. the damn thing had it's mouth locked on his wrist so he had to fight one handed and use his legs and body weight. Talk about good reactions. Butt you know if you go up there you pick up that horrible feeling something is watching you. It creeps me right out so I never went back up there. Then right after my only hike up there a mountain lion took a 5 year old boy they never found him and they searched like never before. Well recent years found his bones and DNA test showed it was that poor little boy. So most know this risk is high and just is rare they go after a human still. We see them right near the 80 collective mail boxes people put up warning signs all the time as they can creep in the talll grass right near the mail boxes We also see many bears so warn others around the mailboxes to keep a eye out as it's the valley right below the trails. |

You really should have a two man buddy team if you are going up there with no guns allowed. I am surprised more of these attacks don't happen. I think a young dumb lion went after a human where a older wiser one would just go find a deer. We have some major numbers of deer for lions to eat. |
Mammoth whisperer User ID: 34713228 United States 02/15/2019 12:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The guy was asking for it and that's what he got. Running alone in a wild area, no deterrent no prevention no phone just a fool with a death wish. Must of been small (80 lbs) and probably alone and very hungry. I find it hard to believe he was able to subdue it with just his body. It had to be weak or ill and the rock to the head probably did more damage than he thought. I mean, have you ever tried to man handle a sizable house cat ? even a cat can hand out some real hurt before you can even react. Last Edited by Rogue bear poop on 02/15/2019 12:11 PM |

I think it kinda dumb ass to go running all the time in mountain lion country. I mean really what the fck are people thinking. They aren't they think pretty means safe. Then goops you die. Butt we have sharks too in the sea and the risks are still low. He said he will only run with a buddy now. I bet so if at all. Yes Fort Collins is a lefty college town and everyone comes up here as it's like 13 miles from town to the trails areas. So lefty time has taken over Fort Collins with 100,000 maybe more college kids from around the country. We get a lot of lefties you might say. It use to be we got Wyoming cow boys and then you noticed how right wing red neck it was up here. That has changed over the past 10-15 years to lefty land. I never bought into the stupid parties so I have a slightly different perspective. don't be a snack for lions buddy |

DIRK User ID: 77152402 United States 02/15/2019 12:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes he made the comment about the back legs of a cat so he used his legs to trap or some way hold the back legs from that motion any cat does when fighting with something. Oh man i had cats for over 20 years and I know that action big time lolol. Little mountain lions in the house screammmmmmmm. I love cats and dogs. I think we have record numbers up here now so this is going to happen more as the numbers climb. It is a amazing area and they have improved many trails I have heard over the years. They also have the area below this one that has horses so I see horse trailers all the times now. Never heard of a mountain lion attacking the horses yet. or bears It turns into a mini city once spring hits. Countless RV's and massive boats on the lake. We have it all and rattle snakes too. LMAO They use to catch and have a rattle snake round up up here in the olden days. Well they never caught all the snakes so year after year they built the snakes up so bad they had to go hunting more often to catch all the ones they missed. Oh great I hate snakes. I think I saw one on my upper deck not sure. It didn't have a rattle making the noise butt i didn't go near the area and it went away. My dogs went insane watching it so i had to lock them in the house. I have a ramp that connects the second story deck to the back mountain so that damn snake came up the long ramp to greet me at my sliding screen door I quickly closed the glass door as my dogs almost busted the screen when they saw that snake. I had two skunks living under my storage area lol oh man and raccoons were very bad kids as well deers for generations sleep right leaning against my house on the ground level They stand up and you have a big buck antlers and this large head looking in the window at you it is firkin wild and funny they are super friendly as they have come here for generations at least 28 years as I have been here that long. I fear and respect my wild life. Bears piped into the wire cover i built for the trash can i only use on trash day. Fckers make a holy hell mess if they spread your trash all over the mountain and road. Live and learn new ways is all you can do living in their home areas. |
tcs User ID: 54560894 Canada 02/15/2019 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've had to do it a few times - Last July I was in the woods and my dog was off his leash and ran at a bear while the bear ran at it. I ran towards the bear with nothing but shouting my head off. Bear came nose to nose with my dog and never touched it. I'm pretty sure if I didn't run at the bear and yell at it, it would have kill the dog. Bears do that just by instinct without even hesitation. The best way to let an animal know you're not worth eating is to do what I suggested above. Wild animals are not use to their prey yelling at them. May work with crazy people too but I've yet to try it on them. BilloutWest User ID: 77163024 United States 02/15/2019 01:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This cougar was small. I have friends who used to run dogs to tree cougars when it was still allowed in Washington. For hunting, pest elimination and photography. Steve was famous for saying every person who saw a cougar always claimed it was a really big cougar. No matter how big it actually was. Steve and Chris had a few times where they would have to pull a mountain lion off their dogs and they knew how big it was. While still dangerous this was a really small cat. They just killed one near Bend Oregon that was by homes and a grade school. It was a full 100 pounds bigger and was stated to be average size for its age by a fish and wildlife guy. |
