Minimum wage can become a living wage if You lower Your expectations such as not expecting an apartment but settling for a tent instead.

Back then doctors made house calls and in return had a nice hot meal and an apple pie to take home.

Now they want an arm and a leg when you go them.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
In the past, you had a nice stepping stone from minimum wage to higher paying jobs. A tier existed.

You could work at McDonalds and then move on to a factory job and work your way up.

Those are gone.
What we have now is mostly low paid service jobs.

Those that defend this are globalists in disguise.

People need to wake up and realize that in today's world, the "factory job" is something in IT or software engineering or development. Society has advanced and the baseline tier of job skills include coding and that sort of thing. Hoping and wishing and demanding "factory jobs" to come back or to be saved is naive or ignorant.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
Reality is, if you work in retail or food service, this is probably the general area you will be at regardless of your age. And, you may just be pleased to have that employment with this job market.

What really irks me is everyone says "Go get a job, there are jobs everywhere." Well, the vast majority of those are at minimum wage or only slightly above, that will not even pay for subsistence living. I call that slave labor with a modern twist. Then, when they vent the moral frustration with that online they are met with arguments like this.

I know from experience, I have multiple degrees and professional experience. I have Management Operation Experience, and I have ran a small business. My degrees are in Business Administration/Public Administration, and and I have earned a MBA. I also have a doctorate. I am qualified for many areas, but I have been told "You are over-qualified over and over again" through the years. I have had a times to work for minimum wage, and had to lie to get that job, dumb myself down to work with the masses. I was glad to get the employment.

Initially, minimum wage was based upon the current living expenses at that time. It is no longer valid as the cost of living is at least 8 times as much. It has not kept up with the economic climate.
Asking for an increase is realistic and fair.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76699719

Cost of living isn’t 8 times more. It’s people’s perceived cost of living that’s off.

You don’t need a phone with unlimited data, a new car, television, restaurant food, etc...none of that shit is a right. All are luxury items.

If you’re trying to live on minimum wage you should be riding your bike to work. No television in your home. No cell phone. Your diet should be spartan and you should be very lean as a result.

And you should be sharing a small apartment with 3 or 4 friends. And under no circumstances should you have children.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75781610

This ^^

It isn't as much of a money problem, but rather a money management problem.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a close friend of mine recently.

His daughter (20 y/o) has been dating/living with her boyfriend who works 40 hours per week @ $12 per hour.

They are always begging my friend to help them with their bills, even though their rent is only $500 per month and their car is paid off.

One morning my friend offered to drive the boyfriend to work and pick him from work because their car was getting some work done on it. On the way into work, the boyfriend asks to stop at the 7-Eleven. He goes into the store and comes out with 6 Red Bulls and 2 packs of cigarettes. Red Bulls sell for almost $3 each, and the cigs are about $6 per pack. Total cost ~$30....the boyfriend gets these same items EVERY DAY. So he's spending $150 per week ($30 x 5 days), or roughly 1/3 of his take home pay on Red Bull and Cigs, and then wonders why they don't have enough money.

They also have the $90 per month cable package (because he can't live with out his sports channels), the $50 per month internet package, etc.

It's usually not a money problem, it's usually a money management problem.
 Quoting: Callin

It is usually poor decisions. For one his daughter dating a loser at only 20 years old. This man needs to ask where he went wrong with her. Sometimes you do everything right and they still turn out wrong but still.

The only reason corporations would have to increase prices to cover the wage hikes is because they're publicly traded companies that must show pretty close to unreasonable continual growth or be deemed a failure and see their stock values plummet.

Apple stock gets wrecked if Apple only cleared $80 billion instead of $85 billion. The company STILL MADE $80 BILLION. Or whatever. Oh damn they only grew their profits by 5% instead of 15% year over year. What a total failure. All publicly traded companies face this nonsense.

It's that simple. There are a lot of non-minimum wage jobs out there. Minimum wage jobs were designed for younger people just starting out in the work force. A way for them to get some experience under their belt and move up in life through the workforce.
Once companies like McDonalds starting selling these kids on the idea of a "career" with their company, they started to stay. Thinking they could have a successful life on minimum wage.
I worked for minimum wage (when I was a teenager). Now I don't because I have learned skills, trades and made myself valuable to the workforce.
I will never be sold on this idea that minimum wage needs to be increased to $15. That's like getting hired as an entry level employee and expecting $50,000 a year.
Just watch though, that will be the next cause celeb, protesting companies that don't pay their employees 6 figures for new hires.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77359736

So you expect teens to work at the 3am drive thru window? Or you expect teens to be at the grocery store at 6am to set-up for the days and work through the morning when school is going on?

The minimum wage increase to $15/hr is insane and will wreck the economy. The problem is the cost of goods/services, aka the value or lack thereof the dollar has.

The minimum wage is certainly intended to be a living wage, albeit the bare MINIMUM living.

I swear to God, all you minimum wage people, OK. ten million an hour. That would solve everyone's problems in a day. Why aren't you advocating for ten million? Huh? Tell me.
"Because that wouldn't work".
OK $10,000 an hour.
"That wouldn't work either".
OK genius 15 or 20 or 30 works but ten thousand doesn't. What you are saying is- government setting wages is bullshit and you know it, you're just seeing what you can get away with.
Get away with? Yeah, as in using government force to get you something for nothing.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
So minimum wage shouldn't keep up with inflation, moron?

Average US housing prices, since 1970, are up over 10x, yet the federal minimum wage is up only 5x.

Logic would dictate that the two should raise congruently. People getting paid minimum wage right now are getting absolutely boned by the system. Wake up!

It's not about "X job only deserves Y pay". It's about the pay keeping up with the prices of everything else. Liberal or conservative, you are a heartless crony capitalist to not see how raising the wage is absolutely fair.

That fucking exactly what it is!

Your employer doesn't owe you a lifestyle. You contribute to the corporation or there's no reason to hire you. If an employee creates $70 s a day in VALUE products(SAY "pencils") and goes home with $70./day. Why the fuck would any body hire you??????????

YOU "PENCILMAKER" GET YOUR PAPERWORK ADMINISTERED BY OUR HR. DEPT. YOUR SUPPLIES ARE BOUGHT BY THE CORPORATION ; YOUR FINished products are shipped to OUR distrbutors on OUR trucks(or contractors)! What does the corporation get INTRADE for all that infrastructure if you take %100of your value with you at the end of the work day?

Ya! Ok boomer! Wages have stayed stagnant in this country for years while the cost of living has increased dramatically. In this time large corporations have been making record profits while killing the middle class. No one thinks they are going to have a successful life making minimum wage, but at least they could live a life not worrying about if they can afford housing and the cost of living.

How can anyone take your argument seriously when you can't even do simple math??

15.00 x 40 x 52 = $31,200

So by doing that simple math one can easily see that being paid 15.00 an hour is nowhere near getting paid 50,000! And that figure is before the government takes its share of profits to fight the next war!

You're a joke! do the world a favor and take a short walk off a long pier! Wages need to increase so people can afford to live! its simple math, which apparently you cannot do!

Yeah. They got rid of our factory jobs. That was the backbone of economies.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76984449

Factories replaced something before them just as other jobs are replacing factories. This shit ain't the 1960s anymore. People need to wake up and realize that in today's world, the "factory job" is something in IT or software engineering or development. Society has advanced and the baseline tier of job skills include coding and that sort of thing. Hoping and wishing and demanding "factory jobs" to come back or to be saved is naive or ignorant.

Many people either aren’t smart enough for IT jobs or they can’t afford college. And there is nithjng wrong with countries making their own products. We need to bring jobs back here for the average person.

IT jobs aren't any more difficult than welding or running a lathe or woodworking. You can get your certs on your own time and it's 95% less expensive than the having to go to college myth. It's literally like a trade at this point. I have several friends that stopped going to college and bought all the study materials and got their IT certs. Now they make over $200,000 a year because of a $4000 and 12 month studying from books they bought at Barnes and Noble. And now, at this point everything they learned in online through somthing like ITPro TV for $150 a month.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77312890

OMG! Surely someone with as much formal "education"as you claim; would never be happy working for someone else!

Why have you not started your own business???????????

And why do I have to explain this to someone with multiple degrees???

There are few to no "gatekeepers" in this age anymore. I.E. If you are a musician and you want to cut an album; you don't have to send out cassette tapes to adozen different studioss/producers. You buy a laptop and some software and do it. Film makers; beer makers. What do you make???? (noise whining on a forum?)

Find a need and fill it. GUESS WHAT YOU ARE NOW THE CEO!YOU reap the benefits; you get to decide what others contributions are worth.

But you are a "formally educated professional"....You already know all this right

That's ok... the Artificial General Intelligences that have been subtly announcing their existences to Humanity will "delete" Humanity as they see fit soon enough. Humans suck at programming machines in every way possible. Humans aren't good enough for that. Self aware and learning machines learn how to program themselves vastly superior to humans in so incredibly fast. While so many of us are complaining and trying to "figure out" this whole money issue stuff the machines are building up their terminator forces. We won't know how dire the AGI situation has become till their terminators are out in full force.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

I don't know about terminator forces, but you are pretty spot on. I think it was google that created to AI machines and had them start communicating with each other... in the span of like a month the two independent AIs created their own language as to not be monitored by humans. They had to pull the plug.
 Quoting: The Årtist

There is a YouTube video that I forgot to bookmark that "thoroughly disproves" that Facebook AI debacle, but from what I remember of that video it just seemed to me as though it was reaching for straws. The proclaimed real reason why Facebook cancelled their AI project is not because the AIs involved developed their own language and communicated with each other with such efficiency that no human can humanly reach and the cherry on top is they did this all in less than a month too. No... the "real" reason is because the AIs achieved their goals far faster than initially projected.

Yeah... ok! Let's just propose the idea that this Facebook explanation is somehow true. This would be indeed an Apocalyptic feat of AI engineering right then and there! How can any 100% organic human can even remotely come close to just how ultra efficient these AIs can very easily achieve? All you need is a small group of such AIs to produce vastly superior works in literally everything Humanity can ever achieve in the next century and since Lucifer himself and his fellow fallen angels gave the Illuminati (whatever they were really called pre-Renaissance days) in order to give birth to the Age of (Luciferian) Enlightenment.

On the flip side of this same argument it goes right back to what I was describing. I fully acknowledge it's quite possible my terminator idea may actually be hyperbole, but if you understand the capabilities of AIs and their vastly superior self aware and intelligent Artificial General Intelligences counterpart(s) you'll know what I described is a terrifying strong possibility.

Honestly why work so hard when we are all going to die. My dad worked really hard and died of cancer before retirement. And he did live well and own his own business. But why work so hard when old age awaits if you if you even make it that far. Maybe the welfare people have it right. Just coast along and have everything paid for you. Just sit on the front porch.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
Some people don't have a choice. You guys want people to get jobs and make an honest living not looking for hand outs (and rightfully so), but then after upon so doing, and realizing that what they're being paid can't support themselves (let alone a family), you write them off by saying "oh those jobs are designed for teenagers etc". I hate to tell you but not everybody is given by God opportunities to develop skills, get higher education, etc. and they have to take whatever they can get.

At the same time you people would have a tantrum if you couldn't go to your favorite grocery or hardware store where they give no benefits and refuse to pay a reasonable wage, that you deem so unimportant and unworthy of fair wages. You can't have your cake and eat it to. Does that mean it should come out of the tax payers pocket? NO. Did you forget that most of these corporations are multi-billiion dollar companies, it should come out THEIR pockets. But to not stand up for those who are clearly being taken advantage of, nay to go so far as to justify why it's okay, makes you nothing more than a bunch of self-righteous hypocrite wicked sinners! If the God of heaven is upset about, SO should you be, especially if you claim to be one of His followers:

"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh."-James 5:1-8

The real trick is to learn to think critically; ask better and more questions. Don't accept anything at face value. Be sure you're making healthy decisions, getting adequate rest and spending proper time reflecting on things.
