Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
It's that simple. There are a lot of non-minimum wage jobs out there. Minimum wage jobs were designed for younger people just starting out in the work force. A way for them to get some experience under their belt and move up in life through the workforce.
Once companies like McDonalds starting selling these kids on the idea of a "career" with their company, they started to stay. Thinking they could have a successful life on minimum wage.
I worked for minimum wage (when I was a teenager). Now I don't because I have learned skills, trades and made myself valuable to the workforce.
I will never be sold on this idea that minimum wage needs to be increased to $15. That's like getting hired as an entry level employee and expecting $50,000 a year.
Just watch though, that will be the next cause celeb, protesting companies that don't pay their employees 6 figures for new hires.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
I think the minimum wage should be higher. When I was in college 25 years ago I made $10 hr working for Hewlett-Packard, I was able to live in a crappy apt by myself, feed myself shitty food, and pay for my own car, gas and insurance. These days, it would be impossible to live off of $10, let alone $7.50. And the other problem is, those $10 hr HP jobs are gone, they all went over seas. So there aren’t any manufacturing jobs where you could squeak by a living. In case you failed to notice, there aren’t any middle class jobs anymore. You either have a degree, or a trade, or you work for minimum wage. That is why I voted for Trumpafter being a lifelong Democrat. I see exactly what the Dems have done to our country and I don’t support it. Still waiting for him to do something about the H1B1 visa program because that is he next phase of major job losses for Americans and needs to be stopped.

EXACTLY

If minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage, and is only meant for high school kids, then how half the market place is full of these low wage jobs?

Looks like the jobs are the problem, not the people.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
Reality is, if you work in retail or food service, this is probably the general area you will be at regardless of your age. And, you may just be pleased to have that employment with this job market.

What really irks me is everyone says "Go get a job, there are jobs everywhere." Well, the vast majority of those are at minimum wage or only slightly above, that will not even pay for subsistence living. I call that slave labor with a modern twist. Then, when they vent the moral frustration with that online they are met with arguments like this.

I know from experience, I have multiple degrees and professional experience. I have Management Operation Experience, and I have ran a small business. My degrees are in Business Administration/Public Administration, and and I have earned a MBA. I also have a doctorate. I am qualified for many areas, but I have been told "You are over-qualified over and over again" through the years. I have had a times to work for minimum wage, and had to lie to get that job, dumb myself down to work with the masses. I was glad to get the employment.

OMG! Surely someone with as much formal "education"as you claim; would never be happy working for someone else!

Why have you not started your own business???????????

And why do I have to explain this to someone with multiple degrees???

There are few to no "gatekeepers" in this age anymore. I.E. If you are a musician and you want to cut an album; you don't have to send out cassette tapes to adozen different studioss/producers. You buy a laptop and some software and do it. Film makers; beer makers. What do you make???? (noise whining on a forum?)

Find a need and fill it. GUESS WHAT YOU ARE NOW THE CEO!YOU reap the benefits; you get to decide what others contributions are worth.

But you are a "formally educated professional"....You already know all this right

Fantastic post, AC. Fantastic till you apply the rules of our Modern World to your ideals. The real "gatekeeper" to the masses is the seemingly permanent indentured servitude status you'll gain when you get, or unable to get a higher education. If you do get your higher education and are extraordinarily lucky to land a job in your trained field before it's inevitably permanently shipped overseas it will still take decades of your life to pay back your soul crushing student loan debt.

For the rest of your ideas, AC... good luck achieving your dreams when someone can easily sue you for copyright infringement. You'll spend lots of money you do not have, go into serious debt just to defend even one of your songs, movies, videos, and/or any other original artworks whatever it may be. Now you've unlocked the Indentured Servant Achievement for quite possibly for as long as you live. Congrats?

The Beast System we all live under regardless if you're loyal or disloyal to the Luciferian Beast System is unimaginably vile and Corrupt beyond what words can truly accurately describe. It's all about victimization of others. Once upon a time you could achieve your dreams of riches without being forced to selling your soul to Lucifer or Satan if you wanted to maintain your riches and not be violently cast down back into the ranks of us poor people.

I honestly believe those with few wants in life stand the absolute best chance at achieving not their dreams of riches and glory, but the single most overlooked and even widely hated prize of all: One's true happiness. What will the pursuit of vast riches will bring you? What will the pursuit of victimization of others achieve for you? What will the pursuit anything outside of achieving what will truly make you happy as an individual will truly bring you?

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
Some people don't have a choice. You guys want people to get jobs and make an honest living not looking for hand outs (and rightfully so), but then after upon so doing, and realizing that what they're being paid can't support themselves (let alone a family), you write them off by saying "oh those jobs are designed for teenagers etc". I hate to tell you but not everybody is given by God opportunities to develop skills, get higher education, etc. and they have to take whatever they can get.

At the same time you people would have a tantrum if you couldn't go to your favorite grocery or hardware store where they give no benefits and refuse to pay a reasonable wage, that you deem so unimportant and unworthy of fair wages. You can't have your cake and eat it to. Does that mean it should come out of the tax payers pocket? NO. Did you forget that most of these corporations are multi-billiion dollar companies, it should come out THEIR pockets. But to not stand up for those who are clearly being taken advantage of, nay to go so far as to justify why it's okay, makes you nothing more than a bunch of self-righteous hypocrite wicked sinners! If the God of heaven is upset about, SO should you be, especially if you claim to be one of His followers:

"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh."-James 5:1-8

We were way more capitalist as a nation in 1932 when that law came out. The ones that want to do away with it are the same ones that moved to communist a d third world countries for slave labor.

The ideal wages from a greedy business man perspective is a big fat 0.

They are part of the free shit army.
They would gladly take free labor.

I lost everything trying to start a business and so do millions of others out there all the time.

Initially, minimum wage was based upon the current living expenses at that time. It is no longer valid as the cost of living is at least 8 times as much. It has not kept up with the economic climate.
Asking for an increase is realistic and fair.

Cost of living isn’t 8 times more. It’s people’s perceived cost of living that’s off.

You don’t need a phone with unlimited data, a new car, television, restaurant food, etc...none of that shit is a right. All are luxury items.

If you’re trying to live on minimum wage you should be riding your bike to work. No television in your home. No cell phone. Your diet should be spartan and you should be very lean as a result.

And you should be sharing a small apartment with 3 or 4 friends. And under no circumstances should you have children.

You have obviously never been laid off in your life or had things come up that made you lose your job or lose hours.

Just because you get a good job at one point in your life and are making good money doesn't mean it will last forever.

My and my wife had our daughter when we both brought in a combined 75k a year.

Then the company we were working for lost their contract and got shut down, we had to move in with my mom.

Get off your pedestal and realize that people go through real struggles.

It’s livable, even in cities with expensive housing costs. BUT you have two jobs. Either one person working 2 jobs. Or 2 people working 1 each.

It’s hard. It’s draining. Its not rewarding. It’s work. So people don’t do it.

Housing cost was the worst for me. But if you want to have your own little space, and you don’t have skills, you work for it.

Now if we get all the illegals out of the apartment complexes, they wouldn’t be so fucking filthy and dreadful to live in. And there would be more lower wage jobs if someone is willing to make ends meet.

Re: Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage
Initially, minimum wage was based upon the current living expenses at that time. It is no longer valid as the cost of living is at least 8 times as much. It has not kept up with the economic climate.
Asking for an increase is realistic and fair.
DOrolleyes
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76699719

Cost of living isn’t 8 times more. It’s people’s perceived cost of living that’s off.

You don’t need a phone with unlimited data, a new car, television, restaurant food, etc...none of that shit is a right. All are luxury items.

If you’re trying to live on minimum wage you should be riding your bike to work. No television in your home. No cell phone. Your diet should be spartan and you should be very lean as a result.

And you should be sharing a small apartment with 3 or 4 friends. And under no circumstances should you have children.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75781610

That just about sums it up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72312485

You have obviously never been laid off in your life or had things come up that made you lose your job or lose hours.

Just because you get a good job at one point in your life and are making good money doesn't mean it will last forever.

My and my wife had our daughter when we both brought in a combined 75k a year.

Then the company we were working for lost their contract and got shut down, we had to move in with my mom.

Get off your pedestal and realize that people go through real struggles.

OP premise is wrong.

When minimum wages were enacted you could live and eat on it. No frills, but you could get by.

You people have all drank the kool-aid.

The very few are getting rich on the many, and you approve.

Oh! It will raise prices on my Big Mac.

Probably so, but what should really happen is that profits of the corporations should be reduced as they make billions and billions of dollars while paying people a pittance which is not enough to let them live, and forcing the taxpayer to subsidize it through welfare, food stamps, etc.

They get rich on OUR backs because they don't pay enough. And the govt is complicit in it. hahaha, the stupid taxpayers will foot the bill.

You people are REALLY stoooopid.

Having dozens of millions of illegal immigrants in America nearly all of whom have up to alot of mental retardation and can barely do janitorial work, but are all given equal job opportunities to these same low end jobs that used to be a given to American teenagers decades ago. What you get is a hyper-competitive job market where the wages are driven so low that you are literally working yourself to death in ever worsening job conditions where you're supposed to be happy living a ceaseless social and economical nightmare.

You get a job where you're constantly at ends with up to literally every employee possible. If you're this weeks' wrong skin color guess what your butt gets such horrific treatment imaginable by everyone. Complain at all and you're instantly fired... if you're extremely lucky. Good luck finding another POS low end job when all of the illegal immigrants are given every possible Government Benefit and you're facing imminent homelessness for the rest of your life.

Hopefully raising the minimum wage would bankrupt these multi billion dollar companies then we could have the mom and pop burger shops open all over the country providing better burgers and employing happy locals at a decent wage.

Fuck any company that is as large as burger king or mcdonalds.

Everyone was meant to grow and provide their own food.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77312890

I tried to start a business and failed.

Took out a loan from the bank, got my truck set up and tools got set up with online advertising, the whole works.

Guess how many calls I got in a three month period for services?

0.

Auto mechanic is my trade by the way.

As busy as every shop is in town I figured affordable auto repair from a mobile mechanic cutting out the cost of overhead and providing people a personal approach to fixing their cars would catch on, but it didn't.

I lost everything trying to start a business and so do millions of others out there all the time.

Some folks get lucky and are able to make a good successful business, but for every jeff bezos there are millions of me's who fail and have to go back to the slave jobs.

Furthermore as an ASE mechanic with tools and 10 years experience I get offered 10-12 dollars an hour at most every job I apply to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42079668

I'LL Grant YOU: $10-$12 for an ASE mechanic is nuts; even at "entry level".... I'm sure there's got to be more to the story. You are NOT "entry level.".
Good luck.

Good luck finding a position thats going to pay higher than minimum wage now at 17 years of age.

Companies have learned that they dont have to pay higher than minimum wage because if they cant find someone locally who is desperate enough, they'll simply outscource to overseas for a lot cheaper.
