National averages mean nothing other than some writer's opinion. You can easily find/rent a 1 bedroom apt. for less than $600-$650 per month in several parts of Texas for example. I am sure the same is true in some other states.

I have never paid more than $650 for a 2 bedroom apartment, and that was when I lived in Salt Lake City, and before they switched management, I was a leasing agent there and worked up enough commission to eventually have nearly free rent for a while.

When I moved back to Illinois I never paid more than that, always much less. But I was resourceful and was willing to live out in the suburbs or in "different" conditions.

I lived in a studio apartment with balcony, over my boyfriend's aunt's house for $450 a month.

Then I found an apartment manager job where I could have discounted rent at $250 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment, but I lived in the ghetto of Joliet between the Casino and the jail. We were the only white people on the block for a while.

After we escaped that place, I lived in a friend's unfinished basement for a year, I think we paid like $3-400 a month.

Then after filing bankruptcy, I finally could afford my own apartment, and my absolutely maximum I could afford was $600, so everywhere I looked in Illinois was literally ghetto. So I went just over the border and found a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Indiana for $575 a month.

Now I just bought my own house (with good credit and total of $4,000 after all the fees, downpayment, closing costs, etc) and my mortgage payment is $450 a month. I thought I would never be able to afford a house as long as I lived in Illinois, but over here in Indiana it is SUPER AFFORDABLE! And I am still only 35 minutes away from downtown Chicago on a good traffic day, lol.
