Did they Teach Civics in Your Schools? | |

Oh well, discuss, please. I definitely think this is an issue. People don't know how government works, so their expectations are off. At least that is my opinion. They changed civics courses to social studies in the 80s. So instead of learning how our government works, and how we are able to manipulated that, we were taught how Columbus had dinner with the Natives. It taught me so much about laws and government. Our older children are missing out on so much. My grandchildren are in the 5th grade and they are in academics. It is unbelievable what they have to know to perform in the Governs Cup. It is a pure shame of how our graduates can't answer questions about our country, state and or past presidents, etc. Civics needs to be brought back to our schools. |

I completely remember both my US History & Govt teachers from HS- I loved both classes & they were great facilitators of current event debates; dissent of the popular opinion was encouraged- even if simply playing devils advocate. Of course I was already volunteering at local campaign offices so loved both classes. |

The only lesson I recall my teacher giving in that class..was how he had the night before, managed to connect his ham radio to some location in Asia. He was very excited. Probably why I remember. The most I ever learned about government in school was in 5th grade. Our teacher handed each of us a pocket size paperback of the Constitution + Bill of Rights and told us that she "didn't have time to teach it but that we should learn it because it was important and that one day we just might have to fight for it be it from enemies foreign or enemies domestic." Our 5th grade minds had no idea what that meant along side boring studies lessons and quotes about not shooting until you see the whites of their eyes or something like that from days long past; just the same, even though it took decades to figure it out, it was one of those things that stuck with me. Hell, it's probably the only thing I remember from that class. If I had to guess, I'd say she probably spent her own money on those pocket sized rights she gifted the class with. I had jury duty last week, and was stuck in voir dire for over 6 hours, most of which time involved attorneys explaining things and concepts like "circumstantial evidence" and "innocent until proven guilty." Things that should be common knowledge for anyone who ever attended school |

It started off slowly and progressed. I remember one of our teachers telling us that's what was happening and that we all needed to be aware. ok "McDonald's is some of the best food you can find. But keep buying that overpriced bullshit from Whole Foods why don't ya?" anon |

I haven't asked my older siblings if they had Civics or not, but I will. My husband is only a bit older than me and was raised in a different state, but they had Civics there. Can one you describe what you mean by the communist influence on Civics? We had History of many varieties, but not Civics. BirdMom User ID: 77329039 Panama 02/18/2019 07:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, they taught Civics in my school. It was a required class in high school, though the subject matter was introduced in increasing doses as early as elementary school. I'm no spring chicken, so I went to school before there was a such thing as a Department of Education, before the objective of the schools was to turn out worker bees. There were classes other than Civics meant to prepare us for real-world living. We were taught how to run a business, buy a home, balance a checkbook, invest in the stock market, etc. They also taught us speed reading and Latin. History classes revolved around American and European history. A lot of what we learned in European History explained why the Bill of Rights was so necessary. We studied the Magna Carta thoroughly, then we were required to memorize the Bill of Rights and understand the Constitution and the rest of the workings of government. |

Just by being here, she knows more about government than most adults, but I can tell she doesn't get most of the ins and outs of it. I feel rather cheated that I wasn't taught this. I do recall "I'm a Bill on Capitol Hill", but that isn't nearly enough information for one who wants to pay attention.
