Up until the time the US Dollar was back by gold, the price per oz was pretty stable - around $30-40 / oz.
Once fiat currency was established and the gold standard removed, price of gold per oz skyrocketed and with it the value of the dollar crashed - creating giant deficits and debt.

It is a catch 22. Even at today's rate of $1200+ per oz, all the gold ever mined could not back the currency today - unless there was a giant recall of cash reserves.

But it does put it into perspective a bit. The annual Federal expenditures hover around $4Trillion - that is half of the gold ever mined. The Fed Govt spends too much money.
