I'm a white male, but I identify as a black woman. I've been dirt floor poor most of my life.

I was born a poor white. My father was a criminal and in prison and left my mother with 4 kids to take care of. We lived in a very poor community where I attended a predominately black elementary school, although the neighborhood I lived in blacks wouldn’t step foot in.

My mother worked for $2.25 an hour. At one point she was two years behind in rent but the rent man felt too sorry to put us on the street. He was elderly and owned a few homes and would come around to collect rent himself once a month. My mother would always send one of us kids to the door with some excuse.

Mom got paid on Fridays, and right around Wednesday each week we’d run out of food. I’ll always remember us kids taking turns thorough the day, to open the refrigerator wondering if perhaps there was something in there to eat that we may have overlooked the last time we checked. We ate our share of government cheese and the canned mystery meat the government gave out to poor folk. On a good day we had fried potatoes, fried bread and if we were lucky a little bit of meat. And we ate our share of beans and rice. I never went to a restaurant as a kid, never got a vacation, never went to the fair. Our Christmas presents, if we got anything, were bought from the second hand store. And our clothes were purchased at the Goodwill.

I got made fun of a lot at school for not having the best clothes and I’d skip the free lunch because then you had to give them your free lunch number which the cashier had to look up by hand and mark your number off on a piece of paper in front of the entire group of kids you knew and you were too ashamed. So I’d skip lunch every day.

During the summer we ate lunch at the local park where free lunches were provided to the kids. My mom would send us there every day and we’d wait for the feee lunch truck to roll up and hand us our boxed lunch with a sandwich, fruit and a milk. Sometimes we’d get cookies.

I remember the first time I was able to fill up my tank with gas. It was always a dollar here and a dollar there.

And when I wanted a piece of candy, I’d go walking along the rode searching for coke bottles. I’d find a couple walk to the super market and cash them in. They were worth 5 cents each. I’d take my 10 cents and walk to a department store near my house that hand a stand that sold Brachs candy by the pound. Two raspberry cream chocolates cost me 6 cents. I’d buy those chocolates, take them home and climb my favorite tree and savor every morsel.

Some things in life you never forget. I wouldn’t change anything about my childhood because it made me thankful, made me better and made me work harder. I don’t take anything forgranted and I thank God every night for the comfortable life I have now. I have a good life now but not many people I grew up with can say the same.

This is just one story of a poor white.
