I've been watching war news for years now. I've lost count of the number of times that Russia has made empty threats. Those threats are ignored, and Russia never actually does anything. They are all bark and no bite. Just look at Syria. Russia threatened to respond to the US if the US attacked Syria. The US shot tomahawk missiles into Syria on two separate occasions, and Russia did nothing. Russia threatened Israel at least 3 or 4 times, and Israel just continues to do what they are doing in Syria. I remember one time when Russia threatened Israel, specifically telling Israel not to hit an airport. Israel hit that airport the very next day, as if to say fk you Putin! Now, Russia is threatening to hit us if we bring nukes to Europe, but he won't. The time has come to just say "Shut up, Putin". It's all theatre. |

This risk was also present during the first Cold War and the nukes were almost launched a few times due to errors and miscalcuations. Putin has been talking about this increased risk since Bush Jr. unilaterally withdrew from the ABM Treaty in 2001. It was that decision, as well as the decision to expand Eastward towards Russia's borders despite a promise by NATO to Gorbachev not to, that has brought us to this new, dangerous Cold War. But this new Cold War is much more dangerous than the first because the center of this new Cold War has moved Eastwards, and there are no longer sane policy makers in the West as in the days of Reagan. Nuclear annihilation could happen in the next minute, and it could all be due to operator error or a a simple malfunction. |
