More and more security holes are appearing in cryptocurrency and smart contract platforms, and some are fundamental to the way they were built.

This is just a feel good piece to reassure the naysayers they they’re not missing the boat. The tech knowledge is severely lacking in this thread.

A "vulnerability" is not a hack. Writer is ignorant!

Block chain is a "cryptographic" data base. The vulnerability is created. Y what is on top of the blockchain.

To say blockchain is hacked is like saying my engine is bad because somebody broke the headlight.

FAIL!

No, that was the noobs.

Those that know how stuff works, knew that all ETC was only living on grace.
It comes as no surprise and was totally expected.

So, problem is that OP has been listening to amateurs and thus thinks he knows anything.

If you guys want to understand look at this (the hash algorithm column)

Some of them use the same and there lies the danger.
Anyone that uses a hash function which is used by another larger chain are not safe.

This is no news.

Thread is fail, because OP tries to mix the chains expected to be strong and the chains expected to fail at any point as the same thing.

No, there wasn't anyone that knew how stuff works that expected ETC to be unhackable.

Re: Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked
That is because you have the CIA/FBI/NSA and security agencies from dozens of other countries, that infiltrate projects like blochchain, to introduce weaknesses into the coding that can then be later exploited.

If anyone is actually starting an "unhackable" project, they need to screen out psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists(who will create backdoors for their own lulz), and government agents, be they foreign or domestic.

One good way, is to sleep deprive the candidate, then get them good and drunk/intoxicated to the point they are sh!tfaced. Then ask them questions about their life, and stuff to probe for inconsistency's(to see if their cover is fake). Then, also ask what they think of backdoors, and so on, to get rid of jerk hackers trying to mess with your product for lulz.

Re: Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked
It is just you who did not know details about blockchains.

If you are into a chain which use a hash-function that is the same as a much larger chain, it can be overtaken at any minute.

It is no news, and you are at fault here by mudding the waters.
No one has hacked a leading hash-function chain.
No one has ever claimed that a non-leading hash-function chain is safe.

You can't mix the two and pretend it is the same.

An attacker could have exploited it to make unlimited counterfeit Zcash. Fortunately, no one seems to have actually done that.

Boolocks.....especialy zcash

And 99% of these types of "hacks" comes from people having acces to source code....

Re: Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked
Bitcoin was not hacked.

ETC was, 51% attacks are frequent, doesn't mean blockchains are "hacked"

but some people don't understand what a blockchain is, and fail to see how they can help the world

That being said, I do not understand those against Bitcoin and yet for banks who rake in billions in profit each quarter and make or break countries.

Enjoy your bankers paradise

It's probably true. What isn't true at all about this statement as it relates to blockchain is that in order to maliciously effect any blockchain network, one would need to simultaneously hack the hard drive of EVERY SINGLE node (computer) participating in the network. It's just not possible, sorry.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77389260

Sorry, my bad. I just did a fly by and was thinking it was individual blocks hacked.

Everything technological that is made by humans is hackable.

Thats why you never submit any personal or important data or files to a "cloud" server or service.

It's only a matter of time until it gets hacked.
