I've shot an '06 for over 50 years, and have used it for everything from coyotes to moose, and everything in between Huge range of bullets available for handloading, too. Your average civilian shooter will not have the skill required to squeeze out the additional 75-100 yards effectiveness of the .308 at extreme ranges. I stick with the '06 because of the large choice of commercially loaded rounds, and you can find them everywhere.
