Nobody will set up a free VPN without a reason. It's work and requires serious bandwidth that costs money. Nobody spends money for nothing. There's always a business model.

A lot of the regular major VPN players have been sold out or made deals as well and some of them were created with nefarious purposes from their inception.

One really popular one that is NordVPN which was spawned by the same company that runs Tesonet which is a huge data mining operation also linked to Protonmail and ProtonVPN which people thought was 'ultra-secure' to the point that a lot of the dark market and deep web merchants use it since it was sold that way but actually state actors and bad folks associated with CERN behind it. All that data is being scooped and parsed.
