The National Space Society has been working on similar goals for decades. In my aerospace career, I helped create long range plans for my company that included beginning asteroid mining and commercial spaceflight. Dr. Gerard O'Neill and his students developed the original ideas back in the late 1960s. A number of books were written about how to colonize/industrialize space. Look him up on Wikipedia. Lots of info. The first thing to understand is that humans do NOT need to live on the surface of planets. That is called "planetary chauvinism". We can construct rotating habitats that provide one G of simulated gravity with radiation shielding, an atmosphere, artificial magnetic field, etc. Such habitats would utilize complete enclosed ecologies with plants, animals, soil, etc. to recycle air, water, and food. Such habitats are often called O'Neill colonies or cities. The amount of resources is incredible even if we just mine Luna and the asteroids. Calculations show that we can construct such habitats sufficient for a population in the trillions. Why should humans go to space? Well, why did Europeans colonize the Americas, Australia, etc? Same reasons: wealth and freedom. In space, you have unlimited energy, unlimited resources, and unlimited freedom. We can do most of this with current technologies. The primary hurdle is the investment necessary to create a self-sufficient economy in space. Just look at human history. It is coming. Ad astra |
