Re: Russian River tops its banks flooding Bohemian Grove while Russian influence and Alex Jones top the Main Stream of consciousness
I know that area very well; spent several holidays with friends and at Russian River resorts when I lived in San Francisco during the 80's.

Back then the only access was via a 2-lane blacktopped highway that wound it's way among some amazing Pine-wooded forests with a couple of stretches right along the Pacific Ocean; today it's four lanes and just as beautiful when the Russian River doesn't crest - as it now has at 10' over the floodstage.

I stayed mostly at Guerneville, which is just NE of the notorious Bohemian Grove. The grove itself sits right smack on the Russian River and is hard to get close to even with freshly-cleared roadways - since the brush grows fast and thick throughout the entire region. VERY fertile soil in them parts! The highway turnoff into the Grove entrance isn't even marked so unless you know what to look for you'll breeze right past it!

Back in the 1880's the whole area was a loosely-connected community of logging camps that supplied the lumber to build the new Metropolis of San Francisco, some 80 miles to the south.

Today, those heavy forests still have narrow winding remnants of logging trails that are great for hiking/camping. And there's camping of all kinds rampant in those woods!

Those backwoods are also a very popular spot to grow some of the world's best Weed: the legendary Sonoma County Sensimilla! I spent one semi-memorable Christmas week with a pair of guys who were quite the gardeners themselves: instead of a holiday centerpiece of Poinsettias, they had an antique 24" brass Miner's pan filled with some of the stickiest bud imaginable! As I said... I almost remember that Christmas!

Guerneville usually has a populace of around 4500 people that in the summer can double with all the urban campers that roll into downtown - all two blocks of it! Not suprisingly, there are several Gay-owned and overpriced resorts in the area and each June Guerneville has it's own Pride parade... which has to circle the town twice because the Main drag is so short [pun SERIOUSLY intended]!

It's a serious issue though: the Russian River crested so fast that there are literally hundreds of people now stranded with small boats the only exit. Luckily, anyone who's lived up there knows enough to keep some provisions onhand; especially in the winter when heavy snows can also isolate the entire region... I almost got snowed-in that one special Christmas long ago... not that I would've cared much!
