Are you running it on windows? Linux? In a docker?

I run unraid, and plex it self runs in a docker.

I run on windows server 2016. I use a raid 5 external drive chassis with 4 8tb drives in raid 5. I use the plex media server app on top of the windows 2016.

Niice.

Have you tried transcoding in ram? It does WONDERS for the server, and responsiveness.

Instead of transcoding on a drive (by default, your c drive because it does it in the plex folder) it will use memory space, which is incredibly fast.

In my testing it went from transcoding like normal at 7-10 seconds on a drive, to about half a second in ram.

The entire server felt snappier after doing this.

I haven't tried it yet. I never noticed much sluggishness but i'm running 64gb of ram, i5 quad core processor. I also truly only run one or maybe two streams max at a time.

Re: Plex - the god of all Media Server Platforms
I run mine off a Mac Mini, with 20TB of storage attached to it.

The interface for Plex is shit though. It makes bunk random playlists. The movie side isn't too bad, but the music side sucks. But the fact I can stream movies or music from my computer at home to a browser on my work computer is nice.

But I absolutely wouldn't use it as my soul media viewing application. Maybe it's like Foobar2000 though and you just have learn how to make it useful.

I did try the music side and wasn't impressed so I abandoned the music side.

What do you use to stream? On the tv in the living room we have nvidia shield.

Not much transcoding needed when you're running that thing, everything is pretty much direct play.
