Consciously or unconsciously, all men and women are looking for their twin soul. What they do not know is ...

Consciously or unconsciously, all men and women are looking for their twin soul. What they do not know is that, in reality, their twin soul is not a different entity from them but the other pole of their being, living on high with God in perfection and fulfilment. In all the ancient initiations, disciples were taught how to find this other pole of their being – their higher self. In India, Jnani yoga provides methods that enable the yogi to achieve union with their higher self, since through this union they become one with God. In Greece, we find the same idea expressed in the phrase carved into the pediment of the temple of Delphi: ‘Know yourself’. But we should not forget the rest of the sentence: ‘… and you will know the universe and the gods.’ True knowledge is the result of the fusion of the two principles, the masculine and the feminine. This is the meaning of the words in Genesis: ‘And Adam knew Eve’. So ‘Know yourself’ means ‘Find the other pole in yourself, find your complementary part and become one with it’. If you are a man, the other pole in you is the feminine principle; if you are a woman, it is the masculine principle, and you seek to merge with one or other principle in purity and light. When this fusion occurs, you meet your true twin soul.

The universe is the work of the two great principles – masculine and feminine, cosmic Spirit and universal Soul – which come together to create. What we call spirit (masculine) and soul (feminine) are emanations of these two creative principles, which is why, like them, we too are creators, through our spirit and our soul. But we can only exercise the power to create if we are able to raise our consciousness ever higher to realms where only light reigns. The spiritual activities that make true creators of us are prayer, meditation, contemplation and identification. In our wish to unite with and penetrate the universal Soul, we fertilize the light – the matter of creation – with our spirit. Our soul then receives the seeds of the cosmic Spirit and begins to bring divine children into the world: inspiration, peace, joy and acts of nobility and love.

Seen from the physical viewpoint only, human beings are either male or female and display the precise and immediately recognizable characteristics of one or the other. But from the psychic point of view, it is much more complex, as each person possesses both the masculine and feminine principles within them, and you cannot limit men to only the masculine principle or women to only the feminine principle. In the Chinese Taoist philosophy, this idea is represented by the yin/yang symbol: the black part, yin, representing the feminine principle, contains a white dot, and the white part, yang, representing the masculine principle, contains a black dot, to express how the masculine always contains a feminine part and the feminine a masculine part. Men and women are not abstract principles but living combinations of masculine and feminine in unequal proportions, and they can change sex from one incarnation to the next. Indeed, each person has to experience both conditions, in order to acquire the qualities of the masculine and feminine principles in all their fullness.

The divine Spirit dwells in every human being as their higher self, but in order to feel its presence they have to place themselves in its service. By doing so, not only do they clear a path for it to their awareness, but they allow it to come down into the substance of their physical body. Heaven is ready to shower us with all its blessings, but we must understand the work of the spirit on matter if we are to receive them. We see evidence throughout the universe of the work of God – the creative spirit, the masculine principle – on matter, the feminine principle. And because human beings have been created in God’s image, they reproduce spirit’s work on matter in everything they do. A farmer simply tilling the soil with his plough, or a mother preparing a meal for her family, or a craftsperson making an object will be acting with their spirit on matter. And if you decide to do some inner work to improve your character and your behaviour, that will also be your spirit acting on matter. You become polarized: the emissive, positive pole – your spirit – acts on the receptive, negative pole – your psychic matter.

In many Indian temples, you see the lingam, the symbol of Shiva, represented – a raised stem on a horizontal base. Those who give commentaries on the symbol often stop at the raised stem, which represents the phallus, the generative organ, the masculine principle. In fact, you should also take into account the horizontal base, which represents the feminine principle. The masculine principle is the spirit, working on the feminine principle, matter. The whole of creation is simply the result of these two principles working together. And so they should not be thought of as separate in spiritual practice either. In India you still come across men and women with a red dot painted between their eyebrows. That is where the ajna chakra, the centre of clairvoyance, of spiritual vision, is situated. But if you concentrate on this chakra, which is receptive, feminine, you should also concentrate on the sahasrara chakra, situated at the top of the skull, which is emissive, masculine. When the two principles are brought together, they become a living lingam.

A birth is none other than a transition from the invisible to the visible, from the immaterial to the material, from thought to manifestation. In our body, it is the moon, the archetype of the feminine, that presides over all forms of incarnation. In winter, the period during which the nights are longest and the life of nature slows down, conditions are less favourable for outward manifestation but more favourable, on the other hand, for inner life: human beings feel the urge to go within themselves to prepare the birth of the child of light, which is represented in some traditions by the symbol of the pearl. The pearl, coming as it does from the sea, is, like the sea, related to the moon. On the sephirotic tree, the pearl oyster is Yesod, the sephirah where the moon is found. In the cosmic body, Yesod represents the genital organs. That is where the pearl must be formed. This pearl represents the purest quintessence of love. The pearl oyster is the feminine principle, which brings a pearl, the divine child, into the world.

The masculine principle is defined as active and the feminine principle as passive. But passivity has no less a role than activity; while the masculine principle brings content, the feminine principle brings the container (form), and form is endowed with an extraordinary power of attraction. The feminine principle is defined as being passive in contrast with the active masculine principle. But to say it is passive does not mean it is inactive; it exerts an action, and this action, which takes on the appearance of passivity, is extremely effective. Instead of projecting itself forward, as the masculine principle does, the feminine principle draws to itself. That is its activity, and anyone who does not have sufficient resistance to oppose it is absorbed. The activity of the masculine is more visible, but it is not more powerful. You could say that to be active implies moving from the centre out to the periphery and that to be passive implies attracting elements from the periphery to the centre. And even if this attraction is not so visible, it is very real and has its own activity.

Plato, in his dialogue entitled Symposium, recalls the myth of the original androgyne. In very early times, there would have been human creatures living on the earth which were both male and female: they were spherical in shape and had two faces, four arms, four legs, two sets of genital organs, and so on. These beings were exceptionally vigorous and, being aware of their power, they took on the gods. Greatly worried, the gods sought a way of making them weak, and it was Zeus who found the solution: they must be cut in two! And that is what happened, which is why, ever since, these two separate halves of the same being have roamed endlessly through the world in search of each other, in order to be reunited and returned to their former wholeness. In this myth recounted by Plato, there is one particularly significant element: in order to weaken the creatures who are threatening the power of the gods, Zeus decides to cut them in two. The idea that emerges from this fact is clear: the power of human beings lies in their possessing both principles. It is this union of the masculine and feminine principles within them that makes them godlike.
