The national air space is getting an update with data from the manned aircraft that fly in air space where a transponder is required, and then data is fed back to the airplane for showing airplanes in your area for improved situational awareness. But this can be a method to charge for miles flown, fine for airspace violations. 1500 automated data sending/receiving towers are in place now across the USA. Regardless of how old or what type the aircraft is.
