Fortunately, Idai is hitting during some of the lowest tides of the month. In locations where Idai’s storm surge is 7 feet, the water levels will be near what the normal high tide will bring on March 20, due to the phase of the moon. Anything over a 7-foot storm surge will be trouble. |

A toggle between Meteosat-8 Infrared Window (10.8 µm) and DMSP-17 SSMIS Microwave (85 GHz) images from the CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site (above) revealed a large and well-defined eye and eyewall structure at 1630 UTC. Idai had been rated at Category 3 intensity as recently as 12 UTC that day. |
