Anyone Still Own a Landline Phone?
Haven't used one in other 3 years yet the phone company (Virgin) still charges rental each month as part of their internet/tv/phone 'package'

Total con as I believe a large percentage of the population dosen't use their landline phone anymore. Do you?

They strong-arm people out by raising the price to keep your copper lines or get VOIP for next to nothing...

Have one in my bundle. Cheaper bundle to have it than to not include it, but I don't have a single phone in the house plugged into the RJ-11 outlet

Re: Anyone Still Own a Landline Phone?
Not since they used it to indicate they were starting to play games, by way of a painful discordant tone, that was actually painful, sent down our phone line.

They can do shitty things with landline phones that affect health, and you are none the wiser for it happening...or so they think.

It's not rabble rousers in this country with control of that kind of tech, it's THE uniforms and government of the day.

When they drag a word out of the privacy of your home and use it for a modern slur and excuse to kill people, where they want the money to flow from, there's not a lot you can do, but take notes and wait for better people to step up.

I need copper for the DSL, as it's the only reliable internet in these parts. I have the phone too, and use it regularly. I have a cheap flip phone that I use when away from home.

I'm still trying to figure out what I can do with a smart phone that I can't do with a room full of computers at home.

I hung on as long as I could....they finally told me I had to accept the ONT in my shop if I wanted a landline cuz everything was fiber optic in my area....they were abandoning the copper wire system in place.....

During superstorm sandy, my land line worked fine while the cell system was down.....the ONT sucks cuz the system goes down after 72hr of back up battery....

I have a landline and plan to keep it. I have a flip phone for emergencies but it is never on.

It's amazing how companies all assume I have an iPhone and keep after me to add it to certain accounts, yet they leave no way to reply that I don't have an iPhone.

I am not a phone person so I don't understand how people can be glued to their phones 24/7. I saw a young married couple the other day in a clinic waiting room. They never spoke because each was on their iPhone. How sad is that?

A landline phone is a good thing. In a disaster you won't be able to charge your cell, voip won't work if the internet is down. A landline will work even if the electricity is down.

You don't need phone service for DSL. They can still provide it on what they call a dry line.

The problem is the systems are going fiber optic....the optical network terminal used with the system requires a power source.....the old copper wire system actually had power running thru them.....the ont has a battery back up that will last a few day and then your landline goes dead....

Re: Anyone Still Own a Landline Phone?
Absolutely! And for the precisely same reason that Police/Fire departments and hospitals still use them: they are MORE RELIABLE and with their independent power sources will still work when few things will once electricity fails!

And, it's very true that phone companies discourage their private use by charging more for the service: they have to keep techs on the payroll for a reltatively small portion of their overall business. whenever I have to place a service call [which is very RARE!] I usually have to wait about three days for one to show up.

BTW: altohuhgh I've owned several cellphones over the years, I've never carried one regularly and don't expect to do so anytime soon. I'm not THAT psychologically dependent on staying socially-connected!!

Keep the copper. In an emergency, copper wiring and and old phone can still make calls when all else fails.

Landline, in a dead zone so DSL and Ooma. Old flip phones in cars to dial 911, never paid for a plan.

True. If I ever move I probably won't have the option. Telcom companies don't like landlines because there is no profit anymore. They would rather have us using other more expensive options in the name of progress.

Then how do you explain that the only time my landline has ever gone dead is when the cable has been physically damaged/shorted [usually by flooding or corroded terminals]? When he was installing my WiFi router I asked a service tech if my line was fiber-optic and he emphatically stated, "No" and that there were no plans to convert it over.

On an unrelated note, did you know that up until the late 1950's when you made a call you heard the actual phone ringing on the other end? New tech soon phased that out and ever since that ringing bell has been simulated.

I questioned why they did this 5yrs ago before i left the UK. It is about time they tied landlines and mobile networks together so you had the same number etc, just different device or multiple extensions but it was all in one bill.
I guess they have discussed it but as usual gone down the max profit route?
Still - if sky etc did a total package covering net, tv and landline plus any number of added mobiles then they would sew up the whole communication media spectrum imo.
What parent isn't gonna want all mobiles on one bill (It's cheap anyway now) inc the payer knowing all the call numbers n texts of his kids etc given today's climate?

Just saying but seems like a winner imo hf
