Teaching
I'm thinking about changing my profession and becoming a teacher to secondary (high school) age students

My concerns with doing this is not just financial but political

I will be teaching biology (I have a degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics)

I will have to teach about the genders and the genetics involved, also sex education

Are there any teachers on this board who have any experience in dealing with the transgender issues in schools at the moment?

I have heard that saying before! lol

I have concerns aboult the direction that Geneticists are taking in regards to gene splicing

I was offered a job a few years ago at an internationally known institute, where I would be helping to sequence the zebra fish genome

I declined (the pay wasn't as high as you'd think and I would have had to relocate to Cambridge)

STEM teachers are being offered competitive tax free incentives to train as there are shortages in this country

Hmm...

This is my dilemma, on the one hand I have to teach genetics and on the other hand I have to teach sex education

Idk, if it pays the bills go for it. I just have a hard time respecting teachers. The majority that i've known are very much egomaniacs. They have this belief that they are always right and know more than you just because they are teachers and teach youth. Beyond that higher education professors, I've been finishing up my bachelors degree after 17 years in the industry i've worked in and the professors are absolute dipshits that have never worked a day in the real world. They have no basis in reality, have no idea how the real world works, and know nothing about information technology beyond what they read out of a book.

I hear where you are coming from

I've had a couple of teachers who are as you've described especially at university where they didn't teach ethics they only taught that we have to consider ethics in our research

In the real world people are genuinely concerned about science ethics

I'm determined to be different when teaching my students

I'm concerned that I'll be forced to teach things I don't agree with

um, what?

there are so many things wrong with this saying

lets try this one:

those who went out and kicked the world's ass and who now feel an obligation to pass on the hard won wisdom, teach.
those who didn't can talk shit about those who did.

that's more accurate, don't you think?

If you can think, thank a teacher

Re: Teaching
Maybe the students in the UK are different. You would have to be nuts though to teach in the US schools.

I will tell you the leftism is the same though. Schools are very politically charged places. Offend the wrong staff member and they will stab you in the back with a smile on their face looking at you. Some great teachers have been harassed of the work place for simply being of the wrong political opinion. You never talk politics at work, but merely buying the wrong products or using the wrong un-PC term will out you.

So if you have a gay administrator, never bring a Chick Fele lunch bag to work. Or like say "illegals" verses "undocumented workers, or immigrants" no matter that person legal status. Nor say there are only two genders. You can say that there is only XX, Xy chomosones, and we don't know why people select the gender they prefer.

If you don't teach to that ideology, watch out! The leftist have 1001 ways to devalue your teaching skills, make you look bad, and force you to resign or get you fired. Same with the leftist students. They don't care if they hurt you or wreck your family stability. To them they have decided you are evil and must be purged from there presence. Because after all only they care about children, and keeping enrollment numbers up $ .

Same with the screwy parent of these kids. They don't use a chain of command to go out of their way to make you look bad. They encourage their kids to act out and complain openly to admin, with the parents in close contact with their kids throughout the day will do the same. They don't want your scientific truth. They prefer their bubble of beliefs reported by popular MSM and movie stars.

You are just going to have to come to terms that sometimes you can't fix stupid. You are not the one that is going to be supporting them when you grow up. The parent are.

Good news. Current trend it is bad to breed more people. So problem solved. Relax, because stupid in not going to reproduce.

Are you a teacher?

You gave me a very detailed description of the cons of working in a school today and I'd like to hear more from you

I'm also interested in the pros of working in a school these days from you and other teachers

Is it easy to bring other topics that are not in the syllabus into the classroom or is that frowned upon?

I ask this because I wonder how much I can teach from the perspective of current advancements in my field

I think that teachers should inspire pupils to go into the chosen field of expertise

NC Teacher here. Know where you're coming from (I've seen it too, especially on the college side), but don't paint us all with a broad brush. Granted, I'm in rural NC, but you would be surprised at the number of conservative teachers.

Thanks for your reply I really needed to hear a teacher recommend teaching as a career choice

My choice to teach high school is because that was where I was inspired to become a scientist

My biology teacher at the time encouraged me and to this day I’m grateful

I think that I could do the same and inspire young adults to pursue STEM subjects

The next generation are crucial to the development of the human race when it comes to technological advancement
