It sounds crazy but fukushima, chernobyl, and three mile island show why nuclear is safe
After a tsunami struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan eight years ago today, triggering the meltdowns of three reactors, many believed it would result in a public health catastrophe.

“By now close to one million people have died of causes linked to the Chernobyl disaster,” wrote Helen Caldicott, an Australian medical doctor, in The New York Times. Fukushima could “far exceed Chernobyl in terms of the effects on public health.”

Many pro-nuclear people came to believe that the accident was proof that the dominant form of nuclear reactor, which is cooled by water, is fatally flawed. They called for radically different kinds of reactors to make the technology “inherently safe.”

But now, eight years after Fukushima, the best-available science clearly shows that Caldicott’s estimate of the number of people killed by nuclear accidents was off by one million. Radiation from Chernobyl will kill, at most, 200 people, while the radiation from Fukushima and Three Mile Island will kill zero people.

In other words, the main lesson that should be drawn from the worst nuclear accidents is that nuclear energy has always been inherently safe.

Re: It sounds crazy but fukushima, chernobyl, and three mile island show why nuclear is safe
That article sounded like a paid advertisement for the nuclear energy industry. Radiation is safe! Fukushima was no buggy. People have moved back. Colorado has more natural radiation than most places and they’re fine.

I like how the article is so dumbed down for the reader. “Radiation” is ....
No mention of Cesium 134, Cesium 137, and strontium 90.

We were told in 2011 that the waste would spew for a 100 years, now they are telling us they are no big deal and barely readable.

Which story makes more sense? The dangerous one or the one that sounds rosy because there is no cure?

Hey, it's Forbes...we know they are reputable and verify everything before publishing it...you act like they are in bed with the wealthy or something...

WHO claims that 9000 people have died to date as a direct result of Chernobyl.

Professor of biology Mr Aleksei Jablokov puts the number
at 900 000.

Who knows...

And yeah, the Soviet Union always enjoyed massive credibility
in telling the truth about domestic mishaps and accidents,
sure sure./sarc

Re: It sounds crazy but fukushima, chernobyl, and three mile island show why nuclear is safe
We need to know the deaths per kWH of electricity produced for the various forms of power generation.

A nuclear plant produces about 4,015,000,000,000 kWH per year and a wind turbine about 6,000,000 kWH per year.

If one person falls to their death while working on a wind turbine then you would have to have 670 people die from a nuclear reactor accident to be on an equal basis.

People die. Might as well get the most bang for the buck.

Wind turbine history in England equates to 1 death per 1,000,000,000 kWh produced.

The equivalent applied to reactor output would be 4,015 people dead which never occurred so nuclear is much safer than wind power.
